Blizzard Announces WoW Arena Tournaments

Blizzard Entertainment has announced plans to launch a new type of tournament competition using the Arena system in World of Warcraft, its popular subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game. The tournaments will take place on special realms that allow competitors to instantly create level-70 characters with epic equipment, placing the focus on tactics and execution rather than normal adventuring.

"eSports is one of the most exciting facets of online gaming today," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "We're pleased to expand World of Warcraft's tournament options for players who want to focus mainly on the competitive aspect of the game."

The tournaments are scheduled to start in April with two rounds of online qualifiers in Europe, South Korea, North America, and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. Each qualifier round will have a per-competitor entry fee -- €15/£12 in Europe; 20,000 won in South Korea; $20 in North America; and NT$450 in the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau -- and will run for six weeks. During this time, teams will play 3-vs.-3 matches on the tournament realm in their region, with the top four teams from each round advancing to the regional finals to compete for more than $27,000 in cash prizes. Winners from each regional will then be invited to a global championship event to compete for $120,000 in cash prizes, including a $75,000 grand prize.

Deliver2Mac Adds Metris4 And MangaJongg

Virtual Programming's digital download service, Deliver2Mac, recently added Metris4 and MangaJongg to its list of downloadable titles. Metris4 follows in the tradition of other arcade titles inspired by Tetris, offering 5 different game modes from which players can choose. MangaJongg is a new incarnation of the famous traditional chinese boardgame, using Manga style art to decorate the game's tiles.

"CLASSIC" is the traditional game mode. "NEW ART" adds Jokers and other tiles to the classic game concept whereas "COLORS" challenges you to arrange the tiles by their color.
"RUINS" is a brand new game mode. Obstacles block your way from the beginning of the game. In "GHOST" mode new tiles and lines appear on the screen if you take too much time to get rid of the lines. As usual, rotate the blocks and always think ahead to arrange the tiles in lines and make them dissappear as quickly as possible.

ManagJONGG requires strategic thinking and a little luck and challenges the beginner as well as the seasoned Mahjong veteran. Different themeworlds provide you with hours and hours of fun and  entertainment.
Each tile is a little piece of art. You will find the traditional Mahjong tiles as well as tiles from themeworlds such as pirates, music, space, horses or sports.

StarCraft II: Q&A Round 30, Map Maker Series

The 30th Q&A focusing on answers to fan questions about StarCraft II, Blizzard Entertainment's long awaited sequel to the original StarCraft, is now available. This edition of the Q&A is the second to focus on the map making tools planned for inclusion with the game. SC II will introduce new multiplayer action and a continuation of the storyline.

1) Will it be possible to code the game so map makers can make maps where people can stop incoming spell/missile?
This should be possible through customized ability data and/or triggers.

2) Will we have selectable male/female of every unit?
No, we don't have plans to include male and female versions of each unit.

3) Will we have the option to give players the option to change weapons in-game?
While we don't have any plans for a specialized interface for this, it would be possible using the highly flexible ability system.

8) Will mapmakers have the ability to set weather that can change the terrain and interrupt gameplay for players? Is this for anywhere or in a specific location?
Weather effect technology has not yet been finalized. However, even if weather effects do not affect gameplay normally, it would be possible to drive both the desired weather effects and associated gameplay effects through triggers.

Spore Previewed

Computer and Video Games has published a new preview of Will Wright's upcoming god sim, Spore. The game will allow players to climb the evolutionary ladder from single celled organism to master of a sprawling galactic empire.

Spore is about evolution, so the gameplay style evolves as you progress. In Creature phase, things go a bit action-strategy and your overall goal is to socialise with other creatures, survive and ultimately evolve to group or Tribe phase.

Tribe phase equals RTS. Here you're building primitive bases and trying to defeat or convert other Tribes populating the world, which ends in the creation of a city.

This then takes you to Civilization phase (no prizes for guessing what game this is like), where you're attempting to become the dominant species on the planet through military, economic or diplomatic means.

Once you own the planet, you enter Space phase, a strategy experience where you terraform planets, visit and trade with other empires (or befriend them) to acquire enough asistance in order to wage intergalactic war. That's where we're all heading folks. By the way, the Space phase is GIGANTIC.
