Living Items Now Available In Dofus

Players of Ankama's Flash based MMORPG, Dofus, can now make use of a new type of magic item. Called Livitinems, the new items are living versions of normal items and possess a variety of powers including the ability to talk and the ability to evolve into different forms.

Livitinems are living items like hats or rings for example. They have numerous characteristics: they can evolve by eating some items of the same type, and change their appearance with more than twenty different ways of evolving. They can also copy the qualities of the items you already have and mainly, they're able to talk! In fact, depending on your situation, they can talk with you and have their own behavior! For example, when you lose a fight, and there is a chance that your Livitinem will shout at you and mock you!

KingMania bills itself as a "quick action strategy game." What this means to the gamer is a casual war game with a hint of the deep levels of play found in major Real Time Strategy titles. Penumbra: Overture Mac Demo Now Available

Frictional Games has released a Mac demo of Penumbra: Overture, a first person adventure game. Penumbra: Overture is a horror game that relies heavily on story, immersion, and puzzles instead of violence to follow Philip as he searches his past after he receives letters from his long gone father.

The demo of Penumbra: Overture gives you a short taste of the full episode. You'll get a chance to play the first couple of levels and tease your brain slightly with a few puzzles as you play around with the advanced physics.
The Mac demo of Penumbra: Overture requires Mac OS X 10.4, 1.5ghz+, 512mb ram, and ATI Radeon 9600+ or nVidia Geforce 4+ graphics processors. Please note Geforce 4MX is not supported.

Penumbra: Overture is the first game of a two part horror story, with the second game, Penumbra: Black Plague expected to be released later this year.

Sonic The Hedgehog For iPod Reviewed

Pocket Gamer has posted a new review of Sonic The Hedgehog for iPod. The game brings the well known sidescroling action hero to Apple's multimedia device. Pocket Gamer gave Sonic for iPod a score of 5 out of 10.

From the review:

So what's the problem? Well, it seems that with Sonic The Hedgehog, the low point of iPod control has finally been reached.

It's not that the layout of an iPod precludes a platforming game - the right and left on the click wheel for running right and left and centre button for jump is reasonably elegant. The problem lies in a basic lack of responsiveness; often the jump button doesn't work consistently with quick, successive presses, which results in more than a few frustrating deaths.

This prompts a tendency to hammer on the iPod's centre button - a technique that yields only slightly more reliable results and feels like the sort of abuse the device wasn't designed to endure.

It is possible to play through the game by taking a measured approach, such as creeping up to each platform and avoiding any speedy situations that might require a split second button press. But to do this is to rob Sonic of his crowning characteristic - speed.

WoW: Wrath Of The Lich King Q&A

Computers and Video Games has posted a new interview with Blizzard Entertainment's Jeff Kaplan, lead designer for the upcoming Wrath of the Lich King, the second expansion for the successful World of Warcraft. The Q&A offers more detail on the new content players will encounter upon installing the new expansion.

We feel that we now have an overwhelming majority of players who have played through the content to the end. It's not even about the casual/hardcore thing, it's more about addressing an issue that exists among max-level players.

We felt we could deliver on content towards the end of the game, and that players between level 30 and 40 already have so much to do in the game that they haven't run out of content yet.

These medium-level players are not really hungry for the new features that Wrath of the Lich King brings. It's really about satisfying the players who have reached max level, whether they solo or whether they PvP, whether they raid or role-play.

If they're at max level they're all saying, 'I want more, what are you guys doing for us?'

GameTap has posted a new retrospective of the Ion Storm's classic Deus Ex. The game's combination of first person shooter action and role playing elements made it a hit with many gamers. The article examines the storyline and features which made Deus EX unique.

Up until Deus Ex, most RPG-shooter hybrids--such as System Shock and the Ultima Underworld games--were set in the equivalent of haunted houses: carefully contained environments with their own stylized and internally consistent worlds, stocked with monsters for the killing. But Deus Ex tried to break out of that paradigm into the wider world, ranging back and forth among real-world locations like New York, Paris, and Hong Kong, which were all stocked with NPCs. A year later, Grand Theft Auto III would come along and blow the lid off previous attempts at living worlds, and eventually games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Oblivion would push the concept even further. But at the time, Deus Ex was bold and unprecedented. It is to living worlds what Doom is to shooters.

The world created by Deus Ex was a memorable one. It was oddly prescient, though not for supposing a terrorist attack on a New York City landmark (remember that the World Trade Center had already been bombed in 1993 and the Statue of Liberty had been destroyed in Planet of the Apes in 1968). Instead, it was prescient for suggesting a dramatically shifted political landscape in the aftermath of the attack. This was the starting point for wide-ranging flights of dystopian fancy, which tied together diverse plots and machinations. By the time you saved or doomed the world, depending on your choice of ending, you had dealt with every conspiracy theory in the book: black helicopters, the Illuminati, Area 51, Majestic 12, and so on. Deus Ex was nothing if not generous. Along the way were memorable characters like your cohorts and eventual rivals at UNATCO, your brother Paul, the snake-like Walter Simons, Tracer Tong, and of course, Bob Page
