Eschalon: Book I Now Available For Macs
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 14 comments

Basilisk Games, Inc. today announced the availability of Eschalon: Book I for Macintosh computers. The game is the company's debut title in a planned trilogy of "old school" fantasy RPGs. Book 1 will will take players across massive outdoor environments and deep into sprawling dungeons as they seek to uncover the mystery of who- or what- they are.

“The Macintosh has become an exciting gaming platform over the past few years” said Thomas Riegsecker, Lead Developer of Eschalon: Book I. “We are very pleased to be able to bring our brand of role-playing to the Mac, further increasing gaming options on this great platform.”

With a focus on a single-player storyline, statistically driven character development and turn-based combat, Eschalon: Book I features a style of gameplay rarely seen in anymore commercial games. It is now available for purchase from Basilisk Games Online.

Founded in 2005, Basilisk Games is an independent game developer located in Indianapolis, Indiana. The company’s mission is to produce compelling old-school computer role-playing games for gamers who still remember what great computer RPGs used to be about: “Single-player. Turn-based. Stat heavy. Story driven.”
Eschalon: Book 1 costs $27.95 for the download only version and $37.95 for those who want the CD version. The CD comes with a variety of extras like a high resolution map of the game world, an extended music track, and the game's trailer in several formats.

The game requires MacOS X 10.3.9 or higher, a 1.8 GHz processor, 256 MB RAM (512 recommended), and a 3D accelerated graphics card.

More information on the game and links to the demo can be found online at the website below.

6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 6 comments

MacSoft has announced that it will be releasing the retail version of Cake Mania for Macs. Cake Mania challenges players with 84 levels of progressive difficulty that require players to simultaneously handle all aspects of a bakery business, from handing out menus and collecting cash to baking, frosting and decorating cakes. As the customer base grows, so does the pace of the bakery.

Developed by Sandlot Games Cake Mania has been downloaded over 50 million times worldwide and received numerous awards and nominations for excellence in casual gaming, including the 2006 Casual Game of the Year award from Yahoo! Games.

Cake Mania puts players in the role of Jill, a young woman who returns from culinary school to find her beloved grandparents' bakery closed down by the evil new Mega-Mart in the neighborhood. Players earn money by baking and upgrade Jill's kitchen with state-of-the-art tools while serving her increasingly difficult customers so she can ultimately earn enough to re-open her grandparents' shop.

“As a multiplatform entertainment company, Sandlot Games is committed to bringing its world-class games to the Macintosh,” said Daniel Bernstein, founder and CEO, Sandlot Games. “We are particularly pleased to team with MacSoft to bring the Mac version of Cake Mania to retail outlets.”

Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars Reviewed
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story has posted a new review of Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars, one of EA's new Cider powered game titles. Available for Intel Mac owners only, the game continues the award winning RTS series. GamersInfo mentioned the game's stability and recommended it to fans of the RTS genre.

From the review:

In this version, Kane is back with his NOD rebel army trying to free Earth from the "tyranny" of the GDI. Kane wants all to embrace the Tiberium that affects Earth rather than steal away in protected zones attempting to retain one's old humanity. Tiberium is the source of power for all but also the source of corruption. No more so that then dreaded red Tiberium. To add a twist to the normal two-sided conflict, a new alien race — the Scrin — shows up to play.

The game is fluid and runs well on the Mac. You are able to play campaigns on both the GDI and the NOD side. It is encouraged that you start with the GDI missions in order to get a feel for the game. Once both sets are completed one can play an alien campaign.

As part of the EA series of conversions for the Mac released earlier this year, C&C is by far the most stable and appealing of the releases in the first batch. The game runs solidly, and even with the advent of Leopard, the game is patched often enough to keep it running fairly well. Graphically, C&C is appealing without being over the top when it comes to requirements. Like all the other recent EA releases, it will not run on older Intel iMacs or Macbooks. It does not run on the 950 graphic chip-set on these machines. A good deal of RAM also helps.
