Inside Mac Games Reviews Diner Dash: Hometown Hero
12:59 PM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story

Inside Mac Games has posted a review of PlayFirst's Diner Dash: Hometown Hero, the fourth game in the popular Diner Dash series of casual games. Here's a clip from the review:

Overall, gameplay in this latest edition is pretty much identical to the previous games. There's still a 50-level story mode and an alternative continuous-play mode (which seems very challenging), and in the last group of ten story-mode levels you have an assistant, so you can carry four items instead of just two. The main new addition to the gameplay is the appearance, in a few levels, of a trainee waitress who is ostensibly there to help you. In fact, she's really there to be a pain in the backside, because you have to compete against her and beat her score by a significant margin in order to get through the levels.

Custer Looks To The Stars
6:00 AM | IMG News | Comment on this story

Our resident desktop picture creator, Brad Custer, has unveiled his latest creation. This week's focus is on EVE Online, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game from CCP Games that was recently opened to the Mac gaming community at the beginning of the month.

Here's what Brad had to say:

The massive online universe known as EVE Online from CCP Games opened its gate to Mac users at the beginning of November and my inbox has been a buzz with the excitement. Space is the final frontier, but its also a favorite focus for my game-inspired work. So, it was my honor to venture into this realm. I'm sure it won't be our last trip. I was able to make this week's wallpaper with the help of CCP Games and my trusty cable modem.

Heroes Of Might And Magic V Critical Update Released
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 1 comment

Freeverse recently announced the release of a critical update for Heroes of Might and Magic V for Macs. Version 1.5.1 fixes numerous bugs related to stability and display problems, as well as resolves some registration issues. It is recommended for all users of the game.

HoMM V brings the popular and long running strategy franchise into a new era with a fully 3D animated world, new Active Battle System for faster play, and a host of new creatures and abilities.

Mosey on over to the Heroes 5 site and grab Heroes of Might and Magic V 1.5.1!

Several bug fixes involving stability issues, as well as a couple of changes that should prevent the game from becoming unregistered.

Unfortunately, this does not bring networking compatibility with the Windows 1.6 release, due to factors outside of our control. When we have an update on that front, we'll let the world know ASAP.
Head over to the links below to download the new update and learn more about the game.

Gamepedia Updated To Version 4.1
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Bruji has released version 4.1 of their Pedia programs - DVDpedia, Bookpedia, CDpedia and Gamepedia. The Pedia programs are media inventory applications for Mac OS X, with Internet search and iSight scanning ability.

The update includes customization options for the Add/Edit window allowing users to choose where to display fields and in what order, customization for the Full Screen View details for an improved home theater experience, a new Tags field, better iWeb integration, full Leopard compatibility including new icons as well as many bug fixes and other enhancements.

From Pong to Halo 2, Atari to PS3, Beginner Level to Master Chief - Gamepedia is a game cataloging application for everyone running Mac OS X. It lets you keep track of your game progress, where your games are and which ones you want to buy in the future.

Getting your collection into Gamepedia is easy - just let the program do the work for you. Enter the title or a keyword into the search field and Gamepedia will get all the information for you from one of the six Amazon sites (US, UK, Germany, Canada, France, Japan). If you have an iSight or a scanner you can find your games even faster. Just open a search window and scan the UPC. Cuecats, modified or not, are supported too.

iPod Games Reviewed
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Mac|Life has recently posted a feature covering several games available for Apple's iPod. The article examines iQuiz, Lost, Musika, Royal Solitaire, Sudoku, The Sims Bowling, and The Sims Pool.

From the reviews:

Musika artistically pushes colors and patterns across the screen, slowly presenting a letter. If the letter is in the title of the song playing, hit the center button to score. If not, pass with the forward or back button. Several consecutive answers catapult your points higher. This simple concept suits the iPod and almost works for a game but ultimately grows stale without more rules. Smooth, bold graphics are the biggest draw. You might have the most fun just watching animated leaves blow into letters with the Visualizer mode.

Sharp design and great art make this solitaire bundle excel. Even the menu screens show an animated character pointing at options instead of plain-text highlights. Once you deal the deck, 10 games (including Klondike, Free Cell, and Yukon) hold any solitaire fan’s interest. The scrollwheel moves between cards, while the center button makes selections. This interface is sufficient, but it’s sometimes hard to move through long stacks and quickly make a selection. Bonus: You can listen to your iPod music as you play.

The sudoku craze has subsided, but this iPod game nails almost everything we could want in sudoku. Crisp menus and graphics elegantly present thousands of these number-placement time-killers. Beyond the traditional game, which is available in several difficulty modes, you can manually enter puzzles from a newspaper, book, or magazine. Using the wheel to scroll across the 81 squares can annoy, but this complete puzzler even lets you place possible solutions in a square’s corners. The game can also solve puzzles for you when you’re totally stumped.
