Spiderweb Software Updates Avernum 5
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 3 comments

Spiderweb Software has announced the release of an update for Avernum 5, the latest in the long running Exile/Avernum RPG series. The update brings the game to version 1.0.1 and fixes a variety of bugs in addition to an earlier problem encountered when playing the game on the newest line of MacBooks.

The surface world is ruled by the Empire. Its power is absolute. Its control is unchallenged. And, as a soldier of the Empire, you have a good, comfortable life ahead of you. But then a rebel named Dorikas tried to assassinate the Empress, and everything went wrong for you.

The villain fled somewhere into Avernum, an underworld nation of eccentrics, misfits, and barely civilized monsters, most of whom hate the Empire. And that is where you are going. You must find Dorikas, while dealing with spies, betrayal, and assassins at every turn.

The enemy is waiting for you. You will only survive his attention with the help of these strange cave dwellers. If, of course, they don’t kill you first.

Deliver2Mac Adds Rhem 3
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Virtual Programming's digital download service, Deliver2Mac, recently added Rhem 3 to its list of downloadable titles. The game drops players into a huge, fantastic world full of strange vehicles and buildings, unknown mechanisms and machines, secret passages and doorways. Logic and puzzle solving skills will help players slowly unveil the mystery of this new adventure on Rhem.

"Rhem3: The secret Library" continues the story from its two   predecessors "Rhem" and "Rhem 2: The Cave", but can of course also be played without having played the previous two titles. Your task is to once again help the brothers Kales and Zetais to discover a new part of their fascinating world. After you have found a letter from Zetais with instructions you start the journey to Rhem once again...

On your arrival you meet Kales who has discovered that a mysterious artefact, a black gem, is hidden somewhere on Rhem. Because the doorway must be opened by two persons but remains open just long enough for only one person to slip through, you are the only one accessing this new part of the island. Again, on your own you must uncover these new secrets of Rhem.

You will soon find out that the mysterious black gem is not the only mystery on Rhem. You will discover new passages to unknown but also to familiar and well-known places on Rhem. To find the black gem you must for one uncover the hints hidden in the secret library. But you will also need the help of some other characters to solve all the mysterious of Rhem. Some of these characters, like the redcapped Cavemen, you already met in "Rhem 2". But this time they will ask something of you in return for their help.
Rhem 3 costs $29.95 from Deliver2Mac.

Madden NFL 08 Reviewed
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Applelinks has posted a new review of Madden NFL 2008. The game is the latest in the popular football simulation series, now available on Intel Macs courtesy of Transgaming's Cider emulation software. Applelinks gave the game a winning score of 5 out of 5.

From the review:

Again, when you reach the point where you're starting to get good at the game (or are past it), Madden NFL 08 is fantastic entertainment. The gameplay is solid and the animations are smooth. It's not the best looking game on the Macintosh, but it's certainly towards the top. The weather effects are done nicely, and the stadiums throughout the league are faithfully recreated. Madden even lets you go so far as to create the fans you put in the stadium. I kid you not, you can design the look of the fans. I mean, obviously not all 67,000, thank goodness, but it's still a good way to get yourself into the game.

A better way, though, is to create your own player, whom you can take from a rookie to a Pro Bowler, if you're good enough. That may actually be Madden's main strength; the numerous ways to play. You can just play one-off games, you can control a team through a whole season, you control an entire franchise, you can follow the career of a single player, etc. In other words, not only is there enough here to keep the most avid player entertained, but there are also methods of play for those who can't devote more than a single sitting a week. What I would really like to see, however, is a coaching mode that combines the Madden NFL franchise with EA's recent NFL Head Coach. This would make a great option for those who are more about strategy than control, and it would help new players get started more quickly. Conversely, an "arcade" mode that focuses solely on basic gaming action would also be a welcome addition.
