Apple Games Features The Sims 2 Happy Holiday Stuff
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Apple Games has posted a new feature on the recently released Mac version of The Sims 2: Happy Holiday Stuff pack. The add-on introduces over 60 new items to bring a bit of the holidays to the popular Sim game. The feature article examines some of the new items available in Happy Holiday Stuff.

A Sacred Star gives a ray of hope to any living room wall, while Funky the Snowman plays festive music that gets the whole family in the groove. We bet the Magic Mistletoe will put a holiday spark in Mom and Dad’s ever-souring romance. And don’t forget about the fun his-and-hers holiday pajamas, or the Mr. And Mrs. Claus costumes for entertaining the neighbors’ kids.

When you’re done, put the Huge Tree Extravaganza — a tribute to Rio’s famous majestic Christmas tree — in the front yard and select jolly wallpaper for the family room, something that will complement the Christmas tree you put there too. On the table next to the tree, place a Kwanzaa Kinara and a Chanukah Menorah to make Sims of different religious backgrounds feel welcome.

Finally, no holiday celebration would be complete without a few noisemakers, and DinCo offers just the thing with their Box o’ Blasts, Sparks ‘n’ Stuff, and Box a’ Noise fireworks packages. DinCo Crackers give your Sims some indoor firecracker fun, while the Fountain of Fiery Jubilations caps off the evening with a sparkling finale.

UT 3 Contest: Name That Map
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 4 comments

On the Unreal Tournament forums, Epic Games has asked fans to name a never before seen Capture The Flag map to be featured in the upcoming Unreal Tournament 3. Epic will be choose the name from the list of fan suggestions and the winner will see his or her name included in the UT3 game credits.

Calling all Unreal Tournament fans: Epic needs your help! We have a capture the flag map that needs a name, and we thought we’d turn to you for great ideas. We’ll start with an open call for name suggestions. We’ll give that until (9/10/07), then pick our favorite.

Here’s some tips on how we choose a name:
- It has to sound cool!
- The name must be of the form “CTF-Name”. Multi-word names should be capitalized, i.e., “CTF-FirstSecondThirdWord”.
- Don’t be silly with using names trademarked by someone else, immature stuff, etc.
- The name has to fit the mood. This level takes place in orbit around Omicron 6, the home of the sinister Necris. CTF-HappySunriseBunnyKisses is not appropriate.
- The name has to relate to the map closely, so that if someone says the map name you’ll know which one they mean. For example, a map with a big suspension bridge is called CTF-Suspense. The UT DM map with the deadly pressure chamber was called DM-Pressure. We’ve broken this rule sometimes, but it’s something we’re paying more attention to in UT3.
- For this map, the obvious hook is the gorgeous skybox with the star (Omicron) rising over the planet’s horizon.
Those interested in participating must post their name suggestion on the thread at the link below.

The Late Call: Progress Update & New Projects
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

ByDesign Games latest blog reveals that its upcoming 3rd person stealth game, The Late Call, is progressing well. The conversion to the Unity V2 codebase is already providing enhanced stability and performance boosts across all target platforms. The blog also mentions work on a new version of a classic game for Electronic Arts and an Interactive Visualization Toolkit.

* New Game Design for EA; I cannot say too much about this at the moment, but ByDesign is performing Design Direction with the developer on a new version of a classic & critically acclaimed Electronic Arts console & desktop video game, originally released oh so many years ago. In days gone by, it landed on no less than 13 (that's right, count 'em!) platforms. This mystery game I grew up playing & enjoying as a wee sprout, and so leaped at the chance to help usher in a new version. More about this as it unfolds!

* New Interactive Visualization Toolkit; this project took shape initially to help an existing art client realize their interactivity goals. The end result is a very usable design & development toolkit that enables artists to create interactive visualization applications with no programming head-aches. If such a toolkit sounds interesting to you, you are welcome to email: for more info.
