Inside Mac Games Reviews Pop-A-Tronic
6:20 AM | Marcus Albers | Comment on this story

Inside Mac Games has posted a review for the puzzle game Pop-A-Tronic. Pop-A-Tronic is a color-matching game similar to Jewel Quest and Super Collapse. Here's a clip from the review:

Pop-a-tronic does try to mix up this formula with four different game modes: marathon, puzzle, lock-out, and self destruct. Marathon is the standard game. Lock-out is an even more furious version of the former. The two most interesting modes are self destruct, in which you use the inhaler to move bubbles around for the most combos possible until the timer reaches zero, and puzzle mode, where there is no timer at all. In puzzle mode you get to calmly pick your combos in the best way that will beget yet more combos until you run out of options.

StarCraft II Q&A Round 10
6:08 AM | Cord Kruse | 3 comments

The latest round of answers to fan questions about the upcoming StarCraft II is now available on Blizzard Entertainment's StarCraft forum. The tenth Q&A offers a few more bits of information about the sequel to the original StarCraft. SC II will introduce new multiplayer action and pick up the Zerg, Terran, and Protoss storylines a few years after the end of BroodWar.

1) What does the "Intercept Missiles" function of the Predator do exactly?
The Predator is equipped with a point defense laser system which destroys incoming enemy projectiles. This ability makes the Predator an excellent support fighter to help defend slower capital ships, such as the Battlecruiser.

2) Can the Radar Tower also detect invisible units even in Fog of War?
No. On the other hand, Sensor Arrays and Radar Towers do allow all Missile Turrets in its range to also detect invisible units within those Missile Turrets range.

3) Can the Thor defend itself against air units well?
The Thor unit can attack air units, although it has a relatively slow rate of fire. It is always still better to escort your Thor units with additional support units.

4) Can the Thor be attacked by the Missile Turret like the Colossus?
No.

5) Will phase cannons dissipate if they travel outside influence of pylon matrix?
No, phase cannons will not be destroyed if they travel outside of pylon power. However, phase cannons caught outside of pylon power will still be able to move but will also be stuck in energy form. They cannot redeploy until they are back in range of pylon power. Also, while in energy form, phase cannons have no shields and are extremely vulnerable to enemy fire.

6) When a player in a team game leaves will the computer AI take over? Or, will the remaining players be given control of that person's team?

Computer AI will not take over if your ally leaves in a team multiplayer game. Although, if you have allied control set, the player will be able to control their allys units after they leave.

VMWare Vs Parallels
6:08 AM | Cord Kruse | 5 comments

Macworld UK has posted a new feature examining the virtualization software provided by VMWare and Parallels. The article examines the strengths and weaknesses of the competing products, and offers some insights from VMWare's Richard Garsthagen and Parallels' Benjamin Rudolph.

Discussing the differences between VMWare and its rivals, VMWare’s Product Marketing Manager, Enterprise Desktop, Richard Garsthagen told Macworld: “All Apple computers have more than one core, some might even have multiple processors. Parallels can only leverage one singe core, one single processor. With our solution you can give more power to the more CPU intensive applications, such as Photoshop.”

Parallels’ Benjamin Rudolph is not concerned by his product’s limitations in these areas, however. “VMWare does offer Symmetric Multiprocessing (SMP) support and x64 support, but these are features that the average user a) doesn't understand and b) doesn't need. Only very high-end, power users need or want these features. That being said, we are adding them in the next several months. We've been publicly announcing that these are coming for many months now.”

On the flip side, however, Parallels Desktop is the only virtualization product that supports 3D gaming right now. Parallels is “the only solution that can run OpenGL applications like Quake4,” said Rudolph.

Garsthagen said: “Most of the PC games, especially the older PC games, work fine.” But he did admit that there is some way to go before the consumer gets a “true PC experience” in this area.
