Parallels 3 Released with 3D Game Support

Parallels, Inc. announced yesterday its release of Parallels Desktop 3.0 for Mac, a completely new version of its award-winning software that enables Mac users to run Windows, Linux, and any other operating system at the same time as OS X on a single Mac desktop, without rebooting.

The release of Parallels Desktop 3.0 introduces over 50 new features, enhancements and improvements to the emulation software. The release is anchored by SmartSelect, a powerful new feature that lets users use any OS X or Windows application to open any file type, regardless of whether that file is on the Mac or Windows desktop. Other improvements include 3D Graphics support which allows for games such as Quake, Half-Life 2, and World of Warcraft, as well as work with complex Windows-only 3D CAD programs.

Jim Raynor Discusses StarCraft

Blizzplanet has posted an interview with Robert Clotworthy, the voice actor behind the memorable StarCraft character, Jim Raynor. Clotworthy discusses his experiences working on StarCraft and his desire to reprise the role for the recently announced sequel should he get the opportunity.

What was it like voiceing Jim Raynor for the first Starcraft game?

It was 1998 when I recorded Jim Raynor, close to ten years ago so the memory may be a bit fuzzy. I know it was fun, it was the first video game character that I had the opportunity to play. Everyone was great, Chris Metzen was there and together we just tried a few different voices till we settled on the raspy one. Chris showed me some artwork that I believe he drew of Raynor. I remember one especially where Raynor was on some futuristic motorcycle and he had all these really cool weapons and I thought Raynor looked like the kind of guy you wouldn't mess with. I made the choice that since Raynor was such a bad ass, he didn't need to get really loud... it was up to the other characters to shut up and listen... and if they didn't, well that was their mistake.

What did you like of your character and its personality?

What I like about Raynor, and I have to credit Chris for this, is that even though Raynor is a simple man... he sees things in black and white... he's conflicted. It's not always easy to do the right thing. But that's where Raynor shows his courage, he does what's right even if it is the difficult choice. In his relationship with Kerrigan, they were very close, obviously they were in love... that's what makes the challenge to him so great when she changes into something that he has vowed to destroy. In destroying her he has to destroy a bit of himself as well. In destroying the only woman he has ever loved or will love, he's condemning himself to a lifetime of being alone. But he's willing to make that sacrifice for the greater good. He's a true hero in the purest sense of the word. We need more Raynor's in the world, hopefully we all have a bit of him in each of us.

Tower Of Destiny: Improving Spells Through Use

A new developer blog for Winter Wolves' upcoming Tower of Destiny RPG reveals the planned spell improvement system for the game. Through each use of a spell the power and effectiveness of the magical effect will increase. A level one spell, through such "training," will eventually grow to be very powerful.

In my game Tower Of Destiny, you’ll be able to train the spells you get at level 1. How? practicing it. In combat only, except for non-combat spells. For example, a spell like “summon food”, will increase everytime you cast it even if outside the combat. But a spell like “Heal” or “Summon Giant Rat” and so on will increase only if you cast it during the combat (to prevent cheating or bots).

I think that’s much better. This way every new spell you get, will be really a new spell - and not just a replacement for your old one. For a Red Wizard for example you’ll be able to learn the “Fire arrow” spell at level 1 and it will do just 1-3 dmg. But as you keep using it, you’ll be able to raise the damage as you level up.

Of course, there will be some checks: if you level up too fast for some reason, or if you use other spells, the basic damage value will scale accordingly to your level (I don’t want a level 10 wizard doing 1-3 dmg!) but at the same time it won’t be so powerful as it could be if you kept using it during combat.

HoMM V Patch Status Update

An update on the status of the upcoming patch for Heroes of Might and Magic V was recently posted to the Freeverse Software forums. Ubisoft has handed over the code from the 1.5 patch of the PC version and Freeverse will now begin the process of adding it into the Mac update patch.

We just received the code from Ubisoft containing the 1.5 update.  So we will start building against it to create an update patch. 

In addition to the 1.5 update changes, we will also be specifically addressing the issues you guys have been seeing. 

We will have more info once we are able to start building all this out (we just got the 1.5 code)...

We have to integrate it in, make sure it works.  Then once all of that is finally done.  We have to get it approved.  We then have to get any release PR approved, and only then can we release.  It's not going to be a fast turn around.

Custer Shoots For The Stars

In a nod to Blizzard's recent announcement, Custer has themed this week's desktop around StarCraft II. Titled "Zerg," the desktop pic feature the alien race of the same name.

Here's what he had to say:

With the recent annnouncement that StarCraft II from Blizzard Entertainment was in development with a simultaneous release for the Windows and Macintosh PC, my inbox has been flooded with a similar theme. As always, I enjoy honoring your requests, so this week we board our ship and head for outer space. I was able to create this week's wallpaper with the help of Blizzard Entertainment and my trusty cable modem.
In the meantime, be sure to check out Custer's latest - it's sure to heighten anticipation for StarCraft II.

The Sims Pet Stories Previewed

Worthplaying has posted a new preview of The Sims Pet Stories, the latest in the new Sims Stories series which started with The Sims Life Stories. Developed by Aspyr Media, the game is laptop friendly and focuses on engaging characters and easy to play storylines. Pet Stories introduces two new storylines which revolve around dealing with a new pet's impact on a household.

The actual game is another streamlined version of the Sims 2 Pets expansion, comparable in some ways to the console versions of the game. Players can opt to play the game in “classic” sandbox mode, or in one of two structured, original storylines. Sandbox mode is everything a classic Sims title is, a creativity game that lets you design a family of humans, their living space, and their pets, then guide them through their lives in an attempt to make them as happy as possible.

The storylines can both introduce new players to Sims 2 Pets and give veterans a chance to play the game in a different way. One of the stories follows Alice, a young woman who is about to lose her home. Saving her house requires training her pet Dalmatian well enough for her to win a dog show, despite the machinations of competitive rival Diana Gabor. The other follows Stephen, a wealthy chef whose life is badly disrupted when he’s forced to take in a spoiled cat named Diva. Both stories force players to try and train pets within a certain period of time, by breaking the game down into a series of mission-like tasks. Chapters are completed when you’ve fulfilled the tasks the storyline requires, and offer players rewards for completion. Interestingly, both of the story modes let you “branch” from the story at any time by simply ignoring the mission tasks. You can simply play in the stories as if you were playing in sandbox mode at any time, for as long as you like.
The PC version of The Sims Pet Stories is scheduled for a June 19 release. There is no official word yet on the status of a Mac version of the game.

Electronic Arts Giving Away Free Games

GarageGames is running a week-long promotion for During the week, which began on June 7th and continues through the 14th, those who register on the GreatGamesExperiment website will receive a free game from a list of 48 titles in the GarageGames store. 18 of the games on the list offer Mac versions.

Games participating in the Great Games Giveaway include award-winners such as Marble Blast Gold, ThinkTanks, Minigolf Mania, and Jets 'n' Guns Gold. All games are available for Windows, an additional 18 are also available for Macintosh users, and 11 can be downloaded for Linux.

Upon creating an account, users will be sent a message through their GGE account informing them of the Giveaway, and linking to the Game Store where they can select their free game. Creating an account at is entirely free, and requires no obligation beyond a valid email address to become a member. The contest will begin at midnight on June 7, and end at midnight on June 14.
