Tribal Trouble Updated: Network & 3D Rendering Optimizations

Oddlabs recently announced that Tribal Trouble has been updated to version 1.9, providing optimized network play and 3D rendering. Multiplayer games will now perform with less lag, and as a result of 3D rendering optimizations each player can now have 250 units. Along with a few bug fixes, the update also adds the possibility of changing game speed during a multiplayer game.

Here is partial list of the changes in version 1.9:

Network optimized: As a result of major optimizations, the lag in multiplayer games has been reduced significantly.

Rendering optimized: Optimizations in the 3D rendering will make the game even faster and better able to handle a great number of units on the island. The maximum number of units per player has been increased to 250 now.

Game speed: The game speed can now be changed during a multiplayer game. All players just have to set the same speed and it will change.

Bug fix: Camera could penetrate the landscape in special cases.

Bug fix: Game crashed if the default OS language wasn't available.

Inside Mac Games Reviews Word Web Deluxe

Inside Mac Games has posted a review of Word Web Deluxe. Here's a clip from the review:

The basic goal of Word Web is to make words, ultimately fending off the spiders and saving the kids. You can spell words in any direction, and you can use all the tiles except ones that are so heavily webbed over you can't read the letter on the tile. When you spell a word and submit it, the tiles are cleared of any webs, and new clean tiles are placed with random letters. If you need an extra letter or two to complete a word, simply grab a green letter and place it where needed on the board. Such intervention comes at a price, costing at least 1 coin for each letter changed. The longer or more complex the word, the more points and prestige you get.

Avernum 5: World Design, Structure, Battles

In a post on the Spiderweb Software forums Jeff Vogel recently offered a new update on the changes and additions fans can expect in the upcoming fifth game in the popular Avernum RPG series. The game will feature gameplay improvements, an intricate plot, and larger battles.

Pretty much every section that doesn't have a town has a hostile area of some sort, generally with some sort of boss-type creature. The bosses near the beginning are fairly straightforward (mages, priests, things that spawn adds), but they'll get fairly baroque later in the game.

I have also reworked how I prioritize my time. Actual dungeons with significance get more time than the did before. The first major storyline dungeon has far more scripted events, special stuff, and so on than practically any dungeon in Avernum 4. Having had plenty of practice working with the engine helps a lot.

Oh, and for people who missed the interviews, in Avernum 5 you will be Empire soldiers, who have had the misfortune to be sent to the underworld. This is not actually the first official Avernum adventure where you work for the Empire. (That honor goes to the Blades of Exile/Avernum scenario A Small Rebellion, which is coincidentally one of my favorite scenarios I've designed.)

Pirates Of The Caribbean Online Q&A

Firing Squad has posted a new interview with Disney Online's Mike Goslin about the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean Online. The MMO will feature real-time combat, ship to ship battles, and a variety of other pirate themed activities. The interview examines the game's real-time combat engine, options for casual and hardcore players, and the target audience for the title.

FiringSquad: The game will feature real-time combat with the player's avatars. Can you tell us more about that and how hard was it to get real time combat to work in an MMO setting?

Mike Goslin: We decided that for our audience it was important for the combat system be active rather than passive. If you fight with a cutlass, you can “chain” a sequence of increasingly damaging cutlass moves together by timing your swings. To fight with a pistol, you must aim at your target. The voodoo doll weapon must first be “attuned” to a target by striking them with it, but once attuned you can run away and attack that target from a distance by poking the doll or setting it on fire.

FiringSquad: What sorts of weapons will players get to use in the naval combat of the game and can you describe a typical encounter?

Mike Goslin: The primary weapon of sea combat is the cannon, and POTC Online features a variety of cannon ammunition including “Round Shot”, “Chain Shot” for taking out masts, grappling hooks for boarding disabled ships, and the devastating “Flaming Skull” to name a few. To keep the action going, cannons have very fast reload times.

A typical encounter starts with a blistering exchange of cannon fire followed by grappling. The pirate crew then swings over to the enemy ship and a sword fight ensues on the deck. When the enemy crew is defeated, they surrender their gold and the pirates return to their ship to continue adventuring.

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars Previewed

The Armchair Empire has posted a new preview of the upcoming Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. The game is an online multi-player, team-based shooter which will travel back in time to the Strogg invasion of Earth, the catalyst for the Quake series. The forces of Earth will face off against the evil Strogg in a violent struggle for survival, giving players the chance to aid either side in the battle for dominion of the planet.

Here players will be able to align themselves with either the humans or the Strogg, and once they’ve pledged their allegiances, they will have a selection of five character types to choose from while playing. The humans will have soldiers, field ops, engineers, medics, and covert ops, whereas the Strogg will sport aggressors, oppressors, constructors, and technicians.  While the Strogg class names are a tad ambiguous, their roles are very similar to that of the human classes listed previously.

The whole point of the game is for players to work as a team, slowly gain more territory, and hold it.  As this is going on, Quake Wars appears to be taking on some elements of the Battlefield series by gaining ranks, skills, and specializing over time.  How well players are able to work together will be key in winning here.
