Sauerbraten FPS Updated
6:22 AM | Cord Kruse | 2 comments

Sauerbraten, a free first person shooter built as a major redesign of the Cube FPS, was recently updated. The update provided a variety of bug fixes, graphical improvements, and content additions. Sauerbraten is available for download on Mac, Linux, and Windows platforms.

Here's a bit more about the game and a short list of changes in the update:

Much like the original Cube, the aim of this game is not necessarily to produce the most features & eyecandy possible, but rather to allow map/geometry editing to be done dynamically in-game, to create fun gameplay and an elegant engine.

* scoreboard now displays mode, map, and time remaining
* bases now produce ammo in capture mode (take ammo with R key or "repammo" command)
* added reflective water in fixed-function mode
* added reflective glass in fixed-function mode
* made waterfall top/bottom correctly align with water surface
* player vs. player collisions now use ellipses instead of bounding boxes
* added new functionality to the rpg prototype (WiP)

Using An XBox 360 With Your Mac
6:22 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

The Unofficial Apple Weblog recently posted a networking guide for gamers who own an Xbox 360 and a Mac. The article offers a variety of ways to bring the two machines together including sharing your Mac's internet connection, using XBox accessories on the Mac, and streaming media from Mac to Xbox.

In many of the recent reviews of the Apple TV, the Xbox 360 was often mentioned as a competing Media Extender product. Having recently bought a 360, I thought it would be good to discover the ways in which my two pretty white boxes can work together. In this TUAW Guide to Xbox 360 and the Mac, I'm going to discuss some of both the hardware and software compatibilities between the machines. If you've ever been curious about the Xbox 360 read on.

Most of your game playing is probably going to be on the Xbox, but occasionally you might like to play a little Wingdings or some classic via MacMAME on your Mac, so why not use the excellently designed Xbox controllers? If you have the wired version of the controller they have standard USB ports which you can plug right into your Mac or a hub, but just plugging them in isn't quite enough. You'll need a driver for the controller hardware, and fortunately Colin Munro has you covered with his donationware Pref360 . Unfortunately, you may also need ControllerMate ($15) to customize the buttons as proxies for particular keyboard keys if your game does not offer customization built it.

Minigolf Mania Reviewed
6:22 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Macworld's Game Room has posted a review of Minigolf Mania from Top Meadow Games. Developed with Garage Games' Torque Engine, Minigolf provides players with a variety of minature golf courses on which to test their skills. The Game Room gave the game a score of 2.5 out of 5 mice.

Minigolf Mania takes the familiar tack of providing you with several different 18-hole courses to play, chock full of hazards that you might find on a real course—windmills, tunnels and bumpers—along with a whole bunch of hazards you’re unlikely to see in the real world, such as moving force-fields, hot rivers of lava and icy fields.

You’re able to play the front or back nine of each course, or practice on a single hole, or play the whole course all at once. Although the game is only designed to support one player at a time, you can take turns at each hole as a foursome, just like in a real game of mini golf. Providing password information and an e-mail address to attach to each user account will also enable you to earn “Minigolf Mania Power Points,” which go toward a worldwide ranking system on the Minigolf Mania Web site . The e-mail address also provides you with occasional notifications of new free courses that Top Meadow has developed for use with Minigolf Mania.

Blitzkrieg 2.6 R20 Released
6:22 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Blitzkrieg 2: The Finest Hour 2.6 R20 was recently released. The total conversion mod for Command and Conquer Generals: Zero Hour allows you to rewrite WWII history by taking command of the Allies, Germany, or Russia and battling using the weaponry and vehicles of the era.

Here's a bit more information about the release:

Macologist is pleased to announce that Blitzkrieg 2: The Finest Hour 2.6 R20 has been released. A work in progress for the team at Derelict Studios over the past few years, this release includes the long-awaited patch to fix a mismatch error introduced with the release of 2.6 (as well as including a few other goodies). Since Blitzkrieg 2.6 lacks skirmish AI, the patch was an important fix before Macologist could release 2.6. There are plenty of units available on all sides for intense multiplayer action. Panzers, Shermans, T-70s, Jeeps, Tigers, P-51s, ME-109s, V1 "buzz bombs", B-17s and more are available for your command. Enhanced by stunning new particle effects, authentic sounds and historical maps, Blitzkrieg 2 will make Zero Hour a World War 2 experience like never before. Good luck, General.
