A Look At Free Quake3 Engine Based Games 6:00 AM | Anthony Wang | 8 comments
Slashdot has posted a story on free games available for PC, Mac, and Linux based on the Quake 3 game engine. The story looks at three prominent games available including Urban Terror, World of Padman, and Tremulous. Urban Terror and World of Padman, formerly modifications that required you to have the original Quake III Arena game, can now be played independently as stand-alone versions. Urban Terror combines realistic environments and weaponry with movement similar to Quake3. World of Padman on the other hand is a colorful shooter in comic style giving you fun weapons like water balloons and water pistols to shoot with. Last but not least there is Tremulous, a first person shooter with added real time strategy elements which has been out for quite some time now. Please follow the links below to learn more information.

Blizzard to Require Mac OS X 10.3.9 6:00 AM | Michael Phillips | 6 comments
In a recent forum post, Blizzard Entertainment announced that they will soon be raising the minimum Mac OS requirement across their entire product line. In order to play online, users will be required to be running Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later. Here's a clip from the forum post: Over the past year, we've provided the following products and updates for the Mac versions of our games: StarCraft 1.14 Universal Application Updates for Warcraft III and World of Warcraft, allowing them to run natively on both Intel and PowerPC Macs Multiple content and feature patches for World of Warcraft, including a major performance update for Intel Macs The Burning Crusade expansion for World of Warcraft Moving forward, we plan on adopting some of the technology referenced above in future updates to: StarCraft and Brood War Diablo II and Lord of Destruction Warcraft III and The Frozen Throne This may include the installer, updater, launcher, and downloader applications that are now a key part of World of Warcraft. A common thread among these applications is that they are built on Apple's latest development tools and are fully OS-X-native applications. This leads to a change in minimum system requirements for online play; we will soon raise the minimum supported Mac OS version to OS X 10.3.9 for all currently supported games. As a result, when the next major patch is released for each of these titles, Mac OS X 10.3.9 (or higher) will be required in order to apply the patch and play online. Also, as we produce new discs for sale at retail, they will also adopt the new installer technology and will only install the native OS X editions of these games. After the transition, Mac players who remain on System 7, Mac OS 8 or 9, or Mac OS X 10.0-10.3.8 will be able to continue playing our Battle.net-based games on their Macs in single-player mode and on a LAN with other players running the same version of the game. Apple's iPod: 100 Million Units Sold 6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story
Apple's extremely popular portable multimedia device, the iPod, reached a sales milestone yesterday. At 100 million units sold worldwide the device becomes the fastest selling music player in history. The first iPod debuted over five years ago in November 2001, and since then has evolved through 10 new models. In combination with the groundbreaking iTunes online music store the device has helped to transform the way music lovers acquire, manage, and listen to music. “At this historic milestone, we want to thank music lovers everywhere for making iPod such an incredible success,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “iPod has helped millions of people around the world rekindle their passion for music, and we’re thrilled to be a part of that.” “It’s hard to remember what I did before the iPod,” said Mary J. Blige, GRAMMY Award-winning singer. “iPod is more than just a music player, it’s an extension of your personality and a great way to take your favorite music with you everywhere you go.” “Without the iPod, the digital music age would have been defined by files and folders instead of songs and albums,” said John Mayer, GRAMMY Award-winning singer-songwriter and guitarist. “Though the medium of music has changed, the iPod experience has kept the spirit of what it means to be a music lover alive." Pirates Of The Caribbean Online Previewed 6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story
RPG Vault has posted the second part of an interview with Disney's Mike Goslin about the upcoming MMORPG Pirates of the Caribbean Online. The interview again offers a look at the features the new online game will offer to fans of the pirate saga. Once released PotC will include ship to ship combat, sword battles, and a variety of pirate themed activities. Jonric: Since you mentioned voodoo, is that your design's version of magic, and how does this element differ from other online worlds? Mike Goslin: We will have a couple of voodoo weapons at launch, where the skills are comparable to spells. For example, the voodoo doll can lay a curse on an enemy or swarm them with insects. Voodoo is also what allows players to teleport to other locations and powers their compass, which points to "what their heart desires most" (e.g. a current quest objective). We wanted to focus on the psychological and natural elements of voodoo in order to fit with the supernatural elements featured in the POTC films, which I think will give our game a different feel from other online worlds that feature magic. Jonric: What kinds of non-combat activities will there be? How feasible will it be to advance a character without fighting? Mike Goslin: The primary activities aside from combat will be treasure hunting, story questing and playing parlor games. These systems will be pretty deep, and a player will be able to achieve notoriety (i.e. level up) in them. We decided not to focus on crafting for this game since it didn't feel very "piratey" to us. At launch we will have several card games including Blackjack and Tortuga Hold-em, as well as a number of treasure collections to search for. The full article is available at the site below.

John Romero Predicts Demise Of Consoles 6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 5 comments
In a recent Adrenaline Vault interview John Romero, the legendary cofounder of id Software, suggested that console gaming is threatened with extinction by the introduction of cheap new multi-core processor PCs. He predicts that game consoles in their current form will either "undergo a massive rethink or go away altogether" in favor of more powerful PC-like devices. 3. Where is it all going? What do you see happening in the next five years and beyond? JR: Right now MMOs, mobile and PC episodic are really polarizing into the newest most important segments in gaming. Next-gen console is big but its future isn’t too bright with the emergence of cheap PC multi-core processors and the big change the PC industry will go through during the next 5 years to accommodate the new multi-core-centric hardware designs. My prediction is that the game console in the vein of the PS3 and XBOX 360 is going to either undergo a massive rethink or go away altogether. The Wii has the perfect design for a console that doesn’t pretend to be a PC and is geared more toward casual gamers than hardcore gamers. The hardcore gamers are going to either be playing on their PCs or a new PC-like platform that sits in the living room but still serves the whole house over wifi, even the video signal.
