Aspyr Ships Star Wars: Empire at War

Aspyr Media has announced that that real-time strategy game, Star Wars: Empire at War, has begun shipping to retailers and should be available within the next few days. The game was licensed to Aspyr by LucasArts and ported to the Mac by Aspyr Studios.

Star Wars: Empire at War puts the power to command an entire war for the Star Wars galaxy in the hands of players, giving them the freedom to determine how they play the game within the completely scalable and accessible gameplay. Set a few years before the events of Episode IV A New Hope, LucasArts’ Empire at War lets players wage war on the ground and in space, as well as experience the creation of the Rebel Alliance, the strengthening of the Empire and the beginnings of the Galactic Civil War.

Using an entirely new game engine created by the Las Vegas-based developer Petroglyph, Empire at War features beautifully rendered land and space battles set on memorable planets such as Yavin IV, Tatooine and Dagobah, as well as never-before-seen environments taken directly from the Star Wars films and expanded universe novels. In the game, players choose to join either the Rebel Alliance or the Galactic Empire, building and setting up tactical forces to unleash upon the enemy in real-time 3D. Memorable Star Wars hero characters can be brought into the action to help turn the tide of the battle as players build, manage and upgrade their space and ground-based units, vehicles, troops and base structures.

Star Wars: Empire At War is rated "T” for "Teen" by the ESRB and is available for pre-order at for $49.95. A free demo is available for download at

Inside Mac Games Reviews Ancient Empires Lux

Inside Mac Games has posted a review of SillySoft's Ancient Empires Lux, a Risk type game set in ancient Egypt, India, China, Greece, Rome, and more. Here's a clip from the review:

Ancient Empires Lux’s graphics are bright and pleasant. There’s nothing fancy here--no troops marching from territory to territory a la Europa Universalis--but it works. Each country’s colors are easy to distinguish. The graphic representing the number of troops you have in a territory changes based on the size of the army: from one soldier for less than 10 units to two soldiers for more than 10 to three soldiers for more than 25. Little arrows indicate which direction you can move to attack, fortify, etc. from a selected territory. The cards you earn by conquering territories look crisp and clean.

Out of the Park Baseball 2007 Released

Sports Interactive has released Out of the Park Baseball 2007, a baseball simulation game for the Mac and PC. This year's version of the sim contains the following updates and enhancements:

New features include FaceGen technology for fictional player photos, league expansion wizard, vastly improved historical simulation with automatic expansion & team relocation, vastly improved AI, easier to use interface, many more news articles, improved play-by-play and more.

Wonder Warp Software Releases Otis

Wonder Warp Software has released Otis, a freeware puzzle and strategy game for Mac OS X.

Otis is based on the classic game popularly known as Chain Shot. This version packs stunning visual effects, addicting gameplay, and multiple levels of difficulty.

IMG Podcast Host Job Opening

The IMG Podcast is looking for a new host for the weekly show. The potential host much be funny, easy going, and know his stuff when it comes to gaming on the Macintosh platform. If would like to apply for the position, please make sure you meat the following requirements:


  • Must have a Mac
  • Must have extensive knowledge of Macintosh games, hardware, and OS X
  • Must have a high-speed Internet connection (one that can handle skype with up to 4 participants without lagging out and causing bad sound quality).
  • A decent microphone, or headset (can not use internal mic)
  • A nice personality is a bonus.
  • Also, please be aware that this is an English language podcast so the applicant must speak English well.

    If you think you got what it takes send an email to imgpodcast-at-insidemacgames-dot-com (email written as such to throw off spammers) With your application. If we think you got what it takes we will hold a test interview with you over skype, which will be a sort of, fake episode.

    Yesterday Apple Games posted a new feature focusing on iPod Gaming, offering reviews of Pac-Man, Vortex, and Bejeweled. In addition to detailing the gameplay, the articles also offer a collection of tips and tricks to help players get the most from their iPod gaming sessions.

    From the Pac-Man review:

    The object of the game is simple, but mastery of it is difficult. Eat all the dots and advance to the next level. You lose a life if a ghost touches you, but you can eat them for a brief period of time after munching one of the four power-ups found in the corners of each maze. The ghosts move faster as the dots deplete, and the action gets more intense when you progress to the next level. Gobble up bonus items, such as keys and cherries, for extra points whenever you can.

    The iPod version of Pac-Man faithfully reproduces the original arcade game, down to the sound effects and music, as well as elements of the cabinet art adorning the side of the screen. Choose from three game modes: Original, which recreates the pace of the arcade action; Normal, which is the same as Original but grants an extra life at the start; and Easy, which gives you two extra lives at the beginning and slows down the pace a bit. You can also start the game at any level between one and six, and you can continue at the level where you lost your last life up to three times per session.

    Imperial Glory Reviewed

    Applelinks has posted a new review, this one examining Pyro Studios' historical strategy title, Imperial Glory. Set during the Napoleonic Wars, the game allows players to pursue diplomacy and resource management in turn based mode before switching to real time for resolution of military conflicts. Applelinks gave Imperial Glory a score of 4 out of 5.

    From the review:

    The full game is Risk on steroids. Territories including all of Europe and Russia and extending into northern Africa are part of the scope of this game. Again, there are the familiar trappings of other games in this genre: resource development, a lengthy research tree, and the ability to win friends and influence countries. A wide range of options are available to you and your opponents on each move. How you spend and gather resources, what sorts of buildings you develop, which step you take in the resource tree and other decisions are similar to the games you have played before (if you have read this far into the review, I'm sure you have played similar games before.) However, I have never played a game with so many choices available. And as your empire grows, you must make these choices within each of your territories. Given that England, France, and other major countries each have several territories within them, you see that this can get complex, like scattering your Ginsu knives in your utility drawer then trying to pick the best one for the job at hand.

    Among the options available to you and your computer opponents are the ability to trade resources for cash or vice-versa, to make defensive and offensive treaties against other countries or empires, or to simply negotiate the right of passage to get to a country that you intend to invade or occupy. But a siege takes time, and countries fight back, and you must learn to counter their efforts through force and secret societies. Symbols will appear over foreign capitals showing their alliances, and then flags will appear indicating resistance to your occupation—even after you were sure you had put them down once and for all. Suddenly you have left a single ship alone at the edge of the ocean and he is taken by the enemy, and the general you just sent in to battle had only a small hand combat force instead of a range of troops to get the job done. Meanwhile, your opponents are making their own treaties and alliances, and your standing in the world (detailed near the top of the screen throughout gameplay) ironically dips even as friendly countries choose to be annexed to your growing empire.
