MIT Takes You Out to The Restaurant Game

MIT researcher Jeff Orkin sends IMG word of a new game-based research project now available for Mac OS X called simply The Restaurant Game. Having previously worked on the AI for games such as No One Lives Forever 2, Orkin is using this new Torque-based game to authomatically gather player information to create a game.

Here's more information on The Restaurant Game:

The Restaurant Game is a research project at the MIT Media Lab that will algorithmically combine the gameplay experiences of thousands of players to create a new game. In a few months, we will apply machine learning algorithms to data collected through the multiplayer Restaurant Game, and produce a new single-player game that we will enter into the 2008 Independent Games Festival. Everyone who plays The Restaurant Game will be credited as a Game Designer. We have had over 1,200 games played in the first few weeks, and are aiming to capture many more.
Head over to the game's site now to download the Mac OS X client. While the current version does not work on Intel Macs, they are planning a Universal Binary release soon.

Armado Reviewed

The latest review from Macworld's Game Room dropped in on the colorful world of Tricky Software's Armado. The action game follows the adventures of Armado the armadillo as he tries to rescue the Queen of the Eagles from an army of giant ants. The Game Room gave Armado a score of 3.5 out of 5 mice.

From the review:

The game is fully 3-D and uses an interesting over-the-shoulder, third-person perspective, but the gameplay mechanics of Armado will be instantly familiar to anyone who’s played a side-scrolling action game like Sonic the Hedgehog. Armado spends the game running and jumping—occasionally hopping over chasms or clearing spike-ridden threats. He can also roll himself into a ball for an extra (albeit limited) burst of speed or to knock into his enemies—wave after wave of giant ant that can either be dodged or knocked to its doom by a swift smack from our intrepid hero.

Here comes the hotstepper In his quest to save the Queen of the Eagles, Armado must grab goodies like this gem while avoiding pitfalls such as birds throwing rocks, lava, and seemingly endless legions of giant ants.

You’re limited to moving in a forward or backward direction with Armado, which makes gameplay extremely simple to use. I’m no fan of overly complex control systems for video games, so this was a welcome respite from the norm, although I recognize that the lack of challenge is likely to frustrate more experienced gamers.

The Broken Hourglass: Moonshine, Chapter 1

Planewalker Games' latest lore update for the The Broken Hourglass, the company's upcoming RPG, takes the form of a new four part serial tale focusing on "the seedy underbelly of Mal Nassrin." Chapter one of Moonshine introduces readers to Klavel, partner in one of the city's illicit pitfighting rackets.

"It's hard to live in a world that is dying," Larius says, delivering this lofty pronouncement in the pious tones of a drunk.  A drunk so sloshed that the very air is causing him to wobble slightly.  But be that as it may, I cannot stop my eye from rolling, though I do it looking away so he won't see.  I hate it when he's like this.

"Don't be such a sop, Larius," I tell him, and he fixes me with a sour look that has anger at the edge of it.  He's long on bark and short on tooth these days. Still, one never knows what day he'll decide to reassert his position as the leader of our duo.

Larius and me go way back, long enough to have a solid history of friendship and animosity.  I suppose that I really would be his protégé and not his friend, if we were being honest.  But I'm not.  Honest, that is.  I don't hold to honesty. It rarely does as much good as a kind and careful lie.

OrderedBytes, LLC has released an update for ControllerMate, a utility which allows users to assign complex keyboard and mouse actions to input devices like joysticks, trackballs, and gamepads. Version 4.2 adds a variety of additions and improvements to the utility.

ControllerMate v4.2 adds 11 new building blocks: Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, Remainder, Comparison, Delta (Number), Application, Controller, Random Number, Accumulator, and Strobe. The Counter building now has an initial/reset value that is separate from its minimum and maximum count values. The Cursor building block may now be configured to move the cursor to a location based on the front window's position. The Range, Value Selector, and Pulse building blocks contain changes to make them more useful with scroll wheels.
