Prey Demo Released

Aspyr Media today released a demo of Prey for the Macintosh. The demo contains the first five levels of the first mission of the single player campaign and two multiplayer levels. The download is available at

Tommy is a Cherokee garage mechanic, refuting his heritage and undecided about his next step in life. His world comes to a halt when an extraterrestrial crisis forces him to awaken spiritual powers from his long-forgotten birthright. Abducted with his people to a menacing mothership orbiting Earth, he sets out to save himself, his girlfriend, and eventually, the entire planet.

Prey is a groundbreaking first-person shooter that turns the genre upside-down with new gameplay features and next generation graphics.

The Prey demo requires:

• Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later
• PowerPC G5 or Intel chipset
• CPU Speed: 1.8 GHz
• Memory: 512 MB or higher

The demo, which weighs in at 454 MB can be downloaded at via http or bittorrent.

Custer Makes A Bloody Return

You'd have to be in a coma not to know that the World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade from Blizzard Entertainment hits stores this Monday at midnight. It's a new year and I've returned from my holiday break with a renewed zest for honoring your requests so this week we return to the realm of Warcraft. From the email I've received, it seems the Blood Elves have a slight lead in popularity so they are the focus again of my desktop. I was able to make this wallpaper with the help of Blizzard Entertainment. I simply entitled this selection, "Sin'Dorei", which stands for "Children of the Blood" and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did making it. :)

Apple Games Features The Movies

Apple Games' latest feature focuses on The Movies, the recent Lionhead Studios' movie mogul sim. Brought to the Mac by Feral Interactive, the game allows players to step into the shoes of a movie studio executive struggling to build the most successful studio in the industry. The article offers an overview of the game as well as comments from Lionhead's Andrzej Zamoyski.

“The movie business is presented as a world of glamour and excess, inhabited by stereotypes and caricatures — making it the perfect target for a video game,” explains Lionhead Studios designer Andrzej Zamoyski. “Although Hollywood may seem like a world detached from our everyday reality, a video game can put you at the center of this world and give you the power to play in it as you wish.”

The Movies, which originated in the mind of Black & White creator Peter Molyneux, does just that, starting you at the dawn of cinema history and letting you guide your studio to the present day. Hire and fire directors and stars as you juggle your film projects, always searching for the elusive mix of talents that will produce a box office hit. Off-screen chemistry among your stars and directors also factors into a movie’s quality, as do their overall stress levels, so make sure you keep everyone happy and at peace with each other, or you may find yourself presiding over the kind of Hollywood train wreck you’ve read about.

As you move through the decades, fashions and technology progress with you, taking your studio from the early days of black-and-white silent films to the current age of slick color movies packed with special effects. Simple sets give way to more elaborate soundstages, while the stories themselves progress from simple tales to epics. You can even take a direct role in your movies, laying out stories with the Advanced Movie-Maker and using the Post-Production Facility to put the finishing touches on a project.

Enemy Engaged 2 Coming To PCs

G2 Games has announced work on Enemy Engaged 2 for the PC. Sequel to Enemy Engaged: Comanche Vs. Hokum, the helicopter combat sim will feature improved graphics, better audio, and dynamic missions. In development since 2005, the game is scheduled for release on PC in 2007.

Released in 2000, the original Enemy Engaged set the standard for 21st century flight sims with stunningly realistic visuals and attention to detail. Enemy Engaged 2 is set to take the series even further with new dynamic missions and a complete overhaul of the graphics and audio to bring the game up to date with the latest and best flight simulations available.
The original Enemy Engaged was brought to the Mac by Feral Interactive. There is no word yet on the Mac status of the sequel.

MWSF: ATI Macworld Report

Though ATI didn't have a booth presence this year, Chris Bentley was on hand for a little Q&A regarding the GPU maker's past, present, and future plans regarding Apple and Mac gaming in general. According to Chris, the relationship between Apple and ATI continues to remain strong, with 10 ATI products in 2006 having made it into various Apple products.

One of the biggest developments in recent memory is the implementation of multi-threaded OpenGL. Though ATI doesn't take any direct credit, Chris notes that they did nudge an initially reluctant Apple in the right direction. Once the performance gains were seen, Apple picked up the ball from there. Thanks to this, along with the switch to Intel processors, ATI has managed to narrow the Mac/PC performance to a small margin.

In info related to OpenGL, Chris adds that both ATI and Nvidia are collaborating to make sure that it doesn't fall behind DX10. While OpenGL is currently missing features that DX10 boasts, both graphics companies are working hard to migrate those features over.

As for future plans, we couldn't get any direct news, but the promise of a large leap in the coming year over the X1900 was given.


MWSF: Freeverse Readies New Titles

Interestingly enough, Freeverse managed to score a booth apart from the MWSF games pavilion, and we just managed to stumble onto them today. Thankfully, they were nice enough to forgive us for our tardiness and show us some of the new stuff they're currently working on.

First up is Tiki Magic, a 3D mini-golf game. While still in early development, we witnessed Tiki masks, collectible gems, moveable objects, and the ability to launch one's ball out of bounds with an ill-placed shot.

Next up is an unnamed title currently going by the acronym BBCG. The premise, however, was instantly recognizable as a version of Colin's Cards, albeit in a gorgeous 3D environment. Monty and Jen were rendered as polygonal models, and the background adjusted itself depending on what time of day the Mac thought it was.

We also got a look at the upcoming Big Bang Brain Games. A collection of 6 titles, including Big Brain Fallacy, Rememberance, Reaction, Sudoku, Echo, and Nova Sweeper, the game types range from quizzes based on philosophical fallacies to a grid-based chain-reaction game that utilizes directional arrows and warp holes to facilitate the movement of particles. BBBG boasts Freeverse's typical polish, and fans of puzzle games should have something to look forward to once this sees release.

Last but not least was Heroes of Might and Magic V, which was being shown off on a gorgeous 30" screen. This Intel-only title, developed under Cider, is nearing completion, with the current build looking quite good. HOMM5 makes full use of multi-threading OpenGL and is reportedly equal in performance to the Windows version.

Concrete release dates were hard to nail down, though Freeverse swears that Big Bang Brain Games will be out by the end of the month. In related news, congratulations go to Freeverse for picking up an Eddy for WingNuts 2.
