Multithreaded OpenGL Benchmarks with WoW
8:36 AM | Anthony Wang | 11 comments

Barefeats has posted benchmarks of World of WarCraft taking advantage of the new OpenGL multithread update from Blizzard. In their initial results, gamers enabling multithreading are likely to see a significant increase in their FPS.

Interestingly, not all new Mac models showed a speed bump, it looks like this might be of more benefit to Mac Pro owners than those using notebook computers:

Big gains are to be had with multi-threaded OpenGL enabled in lower resolutions (full screen) or in windowed mode.

Though we saw gains on the Mac Pro with the Radeon X1900 XT, we saw no gains on our MacBook Pro 17" Core Duo with the X1600 Mobility.

Head over to Bare Feats for the benchmarks, and also watch for more as they explore this option with other hardware configurations.

First Look: The Burning Crusade
8:36 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Macworld's Game Room has posted a preview of the upcoming The Burning Crusade, the first expansion for the ever popular World of Warcraft. The article examines the expansion's additions to the game as well as the improvements offered to some Intel Mac owners by Multithreaded OpenGL support.

Multithreaded OpenGL holds the promise of improving performance for those games and applications that find themselves CPU-bound, which as it turns out, WoW does quite a bit. The technology boosts performance by splitting OpenGL rendering code into multiple pipelines on multi-processor or multi-core computers, such as those Macs that are equipped with Intel Core Duo, Core 2 Duo and Xeon chips.

Blizzard’s engineers have enabled a setting in the Intel build of the beta version of the game that I’ve been playing that allows you to take advantage of this. The net result is that frame rate rendering performance is, in some cases, dramatically improved—doubled, in fact. The biggest improvements are to areas that have really complex geometry, such as cities, or areas that have large “mobs” of players—raids, for example, or crowd scenes.

The Broken Hourglass: Lore Update & Sample Music
8:36 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Planewalker Games has released more information about The Broken Hourglass, their upcoming 2D fantasy role playing game. The update features the second chapter of On The Fly (a short story set within the Tolmiran Empire), and a sample of battle music from the game. Composed by Rob Howard, the sample music is one of dozens which will be heard in The Broken Hourglass.

From On The Fly, Chapter 2:

He kneeled on the cold stone tiles, forcing his breath to remain unlabored. Desonir lingered in meditation until the rise and fall of his chest grew nearly invisible, then froze for several silent minutes. When the stillness numbed the sting of his beaten limbs to a dull ache, he leapt briskly to his feet and strode toward the bath.

Some people—allies and enemies alike—would call Desonir greedy. They would be correct. Those same opining individuals would fail to observe Desonir had developed an equal devotion to restraint, for he had learned in a most difficult way that pride proved deadly without patience.
Check out the latest chapter of the tale and download the music at the links provided below.
