TransGaming Announces Cider

TransGaming today announced Cider, a software portability engine for Apple’s Intel based Macs that the company promises will change the landscape of Mac gaming. With Cider, video game developers and publishers can deploy their Windows-based titles on Apple’s new Intel Mac - quickly, easily, and without the need for traditional porting.

The Cider portability engine is targeted at video game developers and publishers and TransGaming already has agreements in place with a number of the top tier video game publishers to bring their titles to the Intel Mac. Mac gamers can expect the release of these titles in the next few months.
Cider is a sophisticated portability engine that allows Windows games to be run on Intel Macs without any modifications to the original game source code. Cider works by directly loading a Windows program into memory on an Intel-Mac and linking it to an optimized version of the Win32 APIs. Games are simply wrapped up in the Cider engine and they work on the Mac. This means developers only have one code base to maintain while keeping the ability to target multiple platforms. Cider powered games use the same copy protection, lobbies, game matching and connectivity as the original. All this means less work and lower costs. Blizzard Looking For Experienced RTS Level Builder

Another job opportunity from Blizzard Entertainment has sparked fan speculation. The company recently announced it is looking for an experienced level designer well versed in real time strategy games. Whether or not this new job opening offers any hint of future projects remains to be seen. Blizzard and Vivendi have yet to offer any comment on the issue.
Blizzard Entertainment is looking for a talented level designer with experience building levels using any popular 3D Real-Time Strategy game toolset (Warcraft 3, Rise of Legends, Command and Conquer, etc). The ideal candidate has industry experience on a shipping game, or has created and distributed levels in the fan/mod community. Level designers need to be able to create fun and interesting environments that look and play great. Samples of your work should be submitted along with a resume and cover letter. Please include a breakdown for each level that describes what you did (layout, modeling, textures, lighting, triggers, etc.). Minions of Mirth Updated

Prairie Games has once again updated Minions of Mirth, its single and multiplayer role playing game. Version 1.02 adds a variety of new content and fixes a large number of bugs.
Here's a partial list of the changes in the new update:
* Added the Shroom model, thanks to Magnus Blikstad of WIT Entertainment. Read about the rest of the changes in the update at the page listed below.
* Druids can now summon a dual classed Shroomish Pet at level 30.
* Fixed the message on Druid's Master “Inferior” Animal spell line.
* Fixed the giants' spawngroup in Talrim Hills so Jashaut will now spawn.
* Fixed a hole in the terrain in Anidaen Forest
* Single Player worlds are now backed up at load time to a "world.db.good" file
* Rangers now receive mana
* Paladins mana calculations were changed to reflect Presence adjustments

The MindStorms NXT robotic toolkit features an all-new NXT Intelligent Brick with 32-bit microprocessor (which can be programmed using a Mac or PC), 3 Interactive Servo motors, a sound sensor, an ultrasonic visual sensor, an improved touch sensor, and an improved light sensor. The Slacker's Guide has posted a review of DropTeam, the mechanized combat title from Battlefront.com. The game allows players to battle it out with others online in Sci-Fi themed armored vehicle combat.
From the review:
There are no super-vehicles to be had here or ultimate weapons to be fired. Like anything, there are strengths and weaknesses to each vehicle, players fighting with machine guns, artillery rounds and lasers while maneuvering across variable terrain (trees, small ditches and hills make all the difference). Combine this with realistic physics, cool sound work and graphics/terrain that are on par with some of the best titles out there and you have a compelling real time military strategy title.The full review is available at the link below.
Military titles are nothing without tactics and DropTeam actually has some extremely interesting functions that can be performed. In addition to strictly combat units, reconnaissance, command and defensive units can be called in. Players can help hold a line by planting automated turrets and land mines while a clever mix of vehicles such as long-range artillery and fast, short-range vehicles can help slow an enemy advance and achieve long term goals. It's finding the right blend that proves to be fun and this could turn into an extremely fun title for network play wherein two teams collaborate closely with each other.
