Freeverse Releases WingNuts 2
6:51 AM | Tuncer Deniz | 32 comments

Freeverse has announced the release of WingNuts 2: Raina's Revenge, the sequel to the 2002 flying arcade shooter, WingNuts: Temporal Navigator. WingNuts 2 takes all of the action and wacky humor of the original and adds a compelling new story, gorgeous graphics, and tons of gameplay enhancements.

WingNuts 2 is a showcase for the graphics power of the Mac. Utilizing spectacular OpenGL particles and CoreImage time dilation effects, the game provides over 30 levels of aerial excitement. Upgrade your plane with more powerful weapons and capture wild power-ups like "Super Mecha-Mode" and "Escort Wing" to defeat the Baron's terrifying robotic bosses.

Ian Lynch Smith, President of Freeverse, has said: "This is the biggest game to be written specifically for the Mac in years. Targeting just the Mac means no performance compromises (and lower system requirements)-- and we can design in cool OS X specific technologies like CoreImage and iSight integration." Mr. Smith went on to say, "We've worked really hard on this game and think it looks spectacular, especially on new MacBooks."

WingNuts 2 is a Universal application so it will run natively on all new Intel Macs. System requirements include 800 MHz G4 or better, 32 MB of Vram, 512 MB of Ram, and 950 MB of hard drive space.

The full game is available today as an electronic download and will be available in July on MAC-DVD. WingNuts 2: Raina's Revenge, is priced at only $29.95.

IMG Posts EyeTV EZ Review
7:38 AM | Blake Buck | 4 comments

Today IMG posted a review of Elgato's EyeTV EZ. A digital video recorder, similar to Tivo, the EyeTV EZ allows you to watch and record live TV on your Mac, as well as playing console games. From the IMG review:

Elgato's EyeTV EZ is a fully featured DVR with a Mac flair. It would make an excellent addition to a Mac Mini for those looking for a media center Mac. While not as robust as Tivo, it's remote does the job for most things, though a bluetooth keyboard and mouse on your coffee table never hurt either.

The unit's game playing abilities are above average for a DVR, and is great for those with limited space like college students. Plus if you squint really hard, it looks like your playing Halo 2 on your Mac, which is sure to make any Marathon fanboy jump for joy.

Mountain Tanks 1.1 Released
7:08 AM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story

Battery Acid Games has released Mountain Tanks 1.1, an updated version of the company's tank game that puts you in the gunner's seat of a powerful tank. In the game you are the lone defender of an embattled city and at your disposal have a selection of destructive and defensive weapons. Taking turns with human or computer-controlled opponents, you must aim to maximize damage and finish off your enemies before they do the same to you.

Here's a list of fixes:

- added volume controls
    - added practice range
    - hitting a tank with an explosion or weapon now resets their settings (disorienting them, in effect)
    - removed fast-forward option, made a true setting for weapon speed
    - vastly improved windowed mode behavior
    - much improved AI
    - added VBL Sync on the main window (to lower necessary horsepower)
    - improved the graphics on non-shader hardware
    - removed automatic weapon changing each turn
    - fixed wall health
    - fixed smoke screens
    - no longer locking the options menu from being seen in the demo
    - added extra camera control
    - other minor fixes/changes

Weird Worlds: Return To Infinite Space Reviewed
6:54 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

A new review of Weird Worlds: Return to Infinite Space is now available from Macworld's Game Room. The sequel to Strange Adventures in Infinite Space, Weird Worlds allows players to explore the mysteries of a universe in 30 minutes or less. The Game Room gave Weird Worlds a score of 4 out of 5 mice.

From the review:

Combat is a key component of Return to Infinite Space—it’s inevitable that before too long, one of the belligerent space-faring species you’ve met will want to kick your butt. The game changes to an overhead tactical display that shows you at one end and the enemy at the other. You can try to retreat if you want, but where’s the fun in that? Combat is a simple effort—you simply click at the ship in your fleet you want to command and click on the vessels you want it to attack (or, if you’re more into strategy, the area of space you want it to move to) and it’ll follow your command. Battles happen in real-time and come complete with laser blasts, missile volleys, and explosions. They’re lots of fun.

There’s even a battle simulator, which takes arguably the most fun part of the game and lets you cobble together your own little battles, taking on entire alien armadas if you wish.
