First MacBook Benchmarks
7:27 AM | Evan Holt | 18 comments

MacWorld has released benchmarks of the new 13-inch MacBooks unveiled by Apple on Tuesday. The MacBook outperformed the fastest iBook G4 in all but one of their tests and was comparable to a 1.67GHz G4 PowerBook in other areas.

Major considerations in the tests include the lack of dedicated video RAM and the fact that certain applications like PhotoShop aren't yet Intel-native. Here's more detail from the article:

Also worth noting is the MacBook’s graphics system. These new portables use integrated Intel graphics that share the main memory, as opposed to the ATI Mobility Radeon graphics with dedicated memory found in the MacBook Pro models. You can see the advantage of having dedicated graphics memory in our Unreal Tournament test. The MacBook Pro tallies 63 frames per second, compared to a little less than 18 for the MacBook. The 1.67GHz PowerBook G4 tallied a score of 21.4 frames per second in that test. So if you’re a serious gamer, the MacBook is probably not the right system for you. Nevertheless, its performance in other processor-intensive applications is impressive, especially compared to the laptops it replaces.
Follow the link below to MacWorld's article which also shows the break down of the numerous tests.

The Burning Crusade Q&A
7:27 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Gamespot recently posted an interview with Blizzard lead designer Jeff Kaplan about The Burning Crusade, the eagerly anticipated first expansion for the overwhelmingly successful World of Warcraft. The expansion will introduce two new playable races, a new level 70 experience cap, and a myriad of other additions.

GS: Can you tell us about the new flying mount?

JK: The flying mount can run on the ground faster than epic mount speed. We wanted you to be able to land in front of your friends and be able to show it off like, "Hey, dude! Check me out. I'm on a flying mount!" The mount will give you free flight through all of Outlands. So if there's content out on a rock out there, it's only accessible to me if I have a flying mount, which you'll need to be level 70 to get.

GS: Are you allowed to drop off the mount in midair?

JK: Yeah!

GS: And if you drop off from too high up, will you crater?

JK: Oh, yeah. Watch. Clicks dismount action. Ahhhhhh. Player falls and takes roughly 3,700 fall damage.

The rest of the interview can be found at the Gamespot site below.

Dofus Reviewed
7:27 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Killer Betties is the latest site to review the flash based MMORPG, Dofus. Created by French developer Ankama Studio, the game offers players a colorful world to explore and a strategic turn-based battle system. Killer Betties found that the game offers "undeniable entertainment value."

Now what the heck’s a Dofus you ask? Well the Dofus, as Ankama’s Director of Products Thomas Bahon told me, are the rare dragon eggs that are at the heart of the struggle for power within the world of this quirky little game.

Dofus is an MMO featuring a bright, colorful manga look to it that’s been gaining ground in the European market ever since it went live in 2004. At 900,000 registered users and 90,000 subscribers in Europe and the U.S. and still growing, it’s looking to become a standout title in the MMO market. It’s unique from many another MMO in a number of ways: besides being much simpler and friendlier looking in terms of interface and art direction and having zero gore-factor, it’s all 2D, made entirely in Flash (the download is a mere 50MB so it can be played on low spec machines) and it’s compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems.
