Heroes Of Might And Magic V Previewed 7:57 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story
Total Video Games is one of the latest to publish a preview of Ubisoft's upcoming Heroes of Might and Magic V, the latest in the fantasy turn based strategy series. The preview of the PC version briefly examines the turbulent history of the Heroes of Might and Magic franchise before delving into the inner workings of the latest game. Scattered throughout the gameworld are a number of artefacts, which aid the hero characters through their campaigns much like in an RPG title. Artefacts are usually pieces of armour such as helmets and cuirasses, weapons, or even spells. Though exact details of every artefact would ruin the game, Ubisoft has confirmed a couple such as the Turban of Enlightenment (which increases the level of a character's experience by 20%) and the Trident of the Titans (which increases the level of damage caused by a player's attack by 50%). A further breakdown has also been given regarding the different types of spells that can be cast in the game, including Combat Spells, Adventure Spells, Destructive Magic, Dark Magic, Summoning Magic, Light Magic, and Special Abilities though the spell book was certainly very empty during the course of the demo.As if the breakdown of attributes wasn't comprehensive enough, the game goes further with players also able to keep up to date the various skills of their characters. For instance at the beginning of the game, Lady Isabel two primary skills in Basic Counterstrike, a unique skill of knights, and Advanced Leadership, which increases the moral of all creatures in the hero's army by two. The latter skill also enables Isabel to learn new skills at a later stage of the game, in recruitment, estates, and diplomacy. Finally the character screens also provide a biography of the characters, just in case you wanted to know the finer details of a character's past. Freeverse Software will be brining HoMM V to the Mac sometime soon. To read the rest of the preview head over to Total Video Games at the site below.

Blizzard's Rob Pardo Makes Time Top 100 7:57 AM | Cord Kruse | 5 comments
In yet another sign of Blizzard Entertainment's continuing progress toward world domination, Rob Pardo has been included in Time Magazine's Time 100: The People Who Shape Our World. Pardo, Vice President of Game Design at Blizzard and head of the World of Warcraft design team, received the recognition as a direct result of WoW's impressive success. There's a country of 6 million people that's not on any map. It's called World of Warcraft, and it's a virtual country, a computer-generated fantasy environment that you can access, for a monthly subscription fee, via the Internet. It's also one of the most immersive and successful video games ever created, and it could be the future of electronic entertainment. Rob Pardo, 35, vice president of game design for Blizzard Entertainment (although minor deity would also be an applicable title), led the team that designed World of Warcraft, which involved generating from scratch history, geography, anthropology and ecology of a fully realized fantasy world spread over two continents. The game's 6 million fee-paying players can slay monsters, go on quests and even perform everyday tasks like fishing, cooking and tailoring. If World of Warcraft—aficionados call it just WoW—gets any more popular, it may be up for a seat in the U.N. Rob Pardo shares the spotlight with notables such as President George W. Bush, Oprah Winfrey, and Sean Combs. To read more follow the link below.

Carmack on Next-Gen Graphics 7:57 AM | Cord Kruse | 26 comments
In a recent interview John Carmack, legendary president of id Software, discussed the next generation graphics technology which will be on display in Enemy Territory: Quake Wars for the PC. The new MegaTexture technology will allow for higher levels of complexity than conventional renderings. Q4: How is the MegaTexture a major step forward for game graphics? Answer: My core comment here is that any repeating use of a texture is just very specialized data compression. Any time you have one set of texture data, and it’s present in more than one place on the screen, it’s really an approximation to what an ideal infinite resource video game would provide. Because in the real world, there aren’t any repeats—even things that look like they repeat, like bricks or dry wall, are uniquely different. The subtle differences that you get are the things that distinguish a rendering, especially a game rendering, from something that’s very realistic. The MegaTexture allows us to have terrain in QUAKE Wars that does not require any repeated textures for resource limitation reasons. There may still be some areas where a texture is repeated just because they didn’t feel like doing anything better, but there was no resource limitation that encouraged them or required them to do that. They are perfectly capable of having an artist go in and add 10 million little tiny touches to the level if they chose to do so. It’s taken it from being a resource constraint to something that becomes a design trade off. To read the rest of the discussion head over to Gamers Within at the site listed below.

A Tale In The Desert 3 Interview 7:57 AM | Anthony Wang | Comment on this story
MMOz Online Gaming has posted an interview with Andrew Tepper, the lead developer of the upcoming MMORPG, A Tale In The Desert 3. Being developed by eGenesis, ATITD III is the third installment of the popular mmorpg which immerses gamers in the culture and society of Ancient Egypt. A Tale in the Desert attracts a broad range of players. While some are attracted by one or two aspects, many players enjoy the variety of options available and sample all of the Disciplines. I have read that many ex-Star Wars Galaxies crafters have migrated to ATITD because of the depth of the crafting system and player economy. In addition to fans of crafting and trading, the game holds great appeal for anyone who enjoys a good puzzle or contests of strategy. On top of that, the social, legal and political gameplay aspects of ATITD are simply unique and more deeply developed than those found in any other current games or so-called virtual worlds. Please click on the links below to read the interview and to learn more information.
