America's Army Mac Client Dropped

After working on Mac and Linux clients for America's Army long after official support was discontinued, Ryan Gordon has made the decision to move on to other projects. Time issues and an increasing use of middleware in newer versions of America's Army contributed to the decision, as did financial considerations. Gordon says that while version 2.6 may make its way to gamers eventually, 2.7 will not.

The problem, though, is that I'm a busy, busy guy. There are paying clients that are waiting for me to give them my attention, and my TODO list is continuing to grow. There are clients I work for, too many pro bono ports that I think are important, personal projects and experiments, open source stuff that needs love and care...I really do try to make everyone happy, and spend almost every waking hour in a debugger to do so, but as all the people still emailing me for UTPG updates can tell you, sometimes things just get flat out dropped. There are only so many hours in the day, even when I use each at maximum efficiency.

Sadly, the ArmyGame project is about to teeter into this category.

2.7 is coming soon, and I'm still fighting with the 2.6 clients. Future versions of the game will be adding more middleware that I can't keep up with and for which no one will be footing the bill...

What you can do: nothing. Please don't email anyone about this, don't offer to send money. It's just how this goes for now. The client may resurface at some point, but don't hold your breath at this time. 2.6 might still make it out the door, 2.7 probably won't.

Aevum Obscurum for Mac OS X

Aevum Obscurum is a free online turn-based multiplayer strategy game.

The description of the game is as follows:

You will have to take control of an empire at the beginning of the 14th century, Earth. Your strategy is to have absolut control within the next years to come. Your empires to choose from are among England, France, Ireland, Rome and other 50+ all over Europe. Interact with other empires by means of diplomacy. Manage your economy and population.

A turn is usally 24h in length. Within that time period, it is up to you to login to the game, see the current events and stats. You adjust your tax and spending. You input your orders. Your orders and how they turned out will be visible at the next turn to come. It will take you approximatly 5-20 minutes to do your moves everyday.The only requirements are Mac OS 10.4.2, 256MB of RAM and a resolution of 800x600 or higher. You can also play the game online through Java Webstart as long as you have Java version 1.5 or higher.

There are numerous advertisements when flipping through magazines these days advertising Low Latency Memory and the speed increases that you will see when using it. Bare Feats has put two brands to the test to see outcome using Photoshop CS2 and Doom 3.

These tests are not the be all end all. We're open to any suggestions you have to test the effect of memory.

But if these tests are valid, you won't gain anything from more expensive, low latency memory. In fact, you may even lose some speed.

Deimos Rising Review

Blogcritics has posted a review of Deimos Rising, Ambrosia Software's classic arcade shareware game available for Mac OS X and PC. The reviewer discusses the addicting gameplay as one of the main reasons for giving Deimos Rising four out of a five stars. Even though Deimos Rising is several years old without the latest eye candy and technologies, it still remains an enjoyable game to the reviewer and others as well.

It is intriguing to see the games different people find addicting; as Koster suggests, there must be certain patterns and challenges that intrigue us in different ways. Some people love Solitaire; others can't get enough of Madden. A game like Deimos Rising has a basic and timeless appeal with its easy accessibility and yet challenging game play.

WoW Server Issues Detailed

Keeping the world's most popular MMORPG running efficiently is no easy task, as Blizzard Entertainment has discovered since World of Warcraft turned into an unexpected worldwide phenomena. A recent ZDNet article examines the server troubles which have plagued WoW since its release, as well as the latest round of player complaints after the recent update.

According to players, the problems have been especially acute since Blizzard implemented its last major patch to WoW, in late March. At that time, the company acknowledged it had some temporary server problems but said they'd resolve themselves within hours. But some players say that ever since then, they're routinely encountered "urgent maintenance" that can result in being booted from the game at any time.

"Being a system administrator myself, I have some understanding of what goes on in a corporate data center," said Evgeny Krevets, a sometimes-frustrated WoW player. "I don't know Blizzard's system setup. What I do know is that if I kept performing 'urgent maintenance' and taking the service down without warning for eight-hour periods, I would be out of a job."

Tommy Brunner Killed in Avalanche

Developers Bongfish Interactive informed members of their Stoked Rider mailing list that snow boarder and Stoked Rider front-man Tommy Brunner has been killed in an avalanche.

We are shocked and full of sorrow to have learned that Tommy Brunner died on April 21, 2006 in an avalanche in Canada during a film & photo shooting. Born in 1970, Tommy was one of Europe's most experienced backcountry snowboarders. He was already heavily injured years ago in an avalanche. Since then he was a strong supporter of safety at snowboarding, and organized several safety training camps for boarders to prevent accidents. Tommy Brunner died while he was doing something he loved.
We at IMG send our deepest condolences to Tommy's friends and family.
