World of Warcraft Universal Binary Released

Blizzard today has released the eagerly anticipated version 1.9.3 of World of Warcraft as a Universal Binary. The patch adds native support for Intel Macs, so Mac gamers who have one of the new Intel iMacs should see a significant increase in frame rates.

As noted in the changelog:

Added native support for Intel-powered Macs such as the iMac (Core Duo) and MacBook Pro. World of Warcraft is now a Universal Application. Be advised that the minimum supported MacOS X version has been changed to 10.3.9. World of Warcraft version 1.9.3 will not launch on older versions of MacOS X.
Update your copy of WoW by logging in to your World of Warcraft account, which will automatically start the 30MB download.

IMG Reviews The Incredibles: Rise of the Underminer

IMG has posted a review of The Incredibles: Rise of the Underminer, the sequel to the original The Incredibles game from THQ. Here's a clip from the review:

Instead of exploring more of the family dynamic from the first game, Underminer concentrates on Mr. Incredible and his frigid friend, Frozone. In a quick bit of setup at the beginning of the game, Mr. Incredible sends Elastigirl, Dash, and Violet to take care of things on the surface while he and Frozone take care of business in the underworld. While there, they will battle a seemingly endless onslaught of robots as they make their way through the Underminer's underground world. Think 1940's sci-fi at the center of the earth, and you've got an idea of the design of the levels. Lots of gears and gizmos abound in the background, and loads of rusty, riveted metal. It's all up to Mr. Incredible and Frozone to foil the Underminer's dirty plans. I must admit, I had wanted to be able to use the other supers in the family during the game, but in the end, the game design works much better for the two who have been chosen.

How to Become an Indie Mac Developer

Gus Mueller, owner of Flying Meat Software and creator of such applications as Voodoopad, has posted on his blog a beginner's guide to development. This "guide" could very well be seen as a timeline of Gus's success, nevertheless his blog entry offers tips and advice through seven lessons discussing improving your products to not quitting your day job.

I wrote FlySketch so that should anything happen that would make sales of VoodooPad tank, I'd have another app to lean on for cash. Plus now I get to do fun things like sell bundles at a discount which is good for sales as well. Plus my mind wanders so it's good to work on something other than a desktop wiki all day long.

Moving right along...

So it turns out that I did end up making my goal for Jan '05. And Feb, March, April, and so on. Every month that passed my confidence in going indie increased. I talked it over with the wife, and we decided that when we moved to Seattle that I'd be doing this full time. For the first six months I'd have to make X amount of dollars, and the second six months (which starts in Jan '06) I'd have to make more... and so on.

Macworld's Game Room has posted a review of Garage Games' TubeTwist. The unique puzzle game enlists players in the effort to find a missing professor. To accomplish this task players must reconstruct her experiments using a variety of pieces. The Game Room gave TubeTwist four and a half out of five mice.

Piecing together your equipment is a simple matter of pointing and clicking. You can zoom in or out as needed or change position to get a better view. A control console updates you on your energy capacity, your supplies, and your progress. If you mess up and need to start over, you can press the reset button to return to square one.

You have an unlimited number of chances to figure out each puzzle. When you think you’ve got a working solution, you can activate your machine. If the Macrotons crash and burn, well, you just shut it off and start moving pieces around again. There are 80 levels in all. Once you’ve registered the game (by paying your $20), you can save your puzzle solutions and refer back to them later.

Heroes Of Might And Magic V Preview

The eagerly awaited Heroes of Might and Magic V has received another preview, this one from Gamers Info. HoMM V is the latest in the turn based strategy series and will feature 3D graphics and new game play styles. The preview focuses on the PC version of the game.

From the preview:

Perhaps the most striking addition to the game is the 3D representation of the cities. Each city has an amazing level of detail. For example, with each increased rank of a building, the player adds an additional piece to the city that is represented in tremendous detail on the façade of that city both in the city and map views. This was most apparent to me when playing as Haven. As the city expanded along the central peak each major structure was represented on the map view. Along with its addition the city would grow, starting from a fortified town into a nearly impregnable citadel.
Freeverse Software is currently working on the Mac version of HoMMV. It should be available sometime after the release of the game's release on the PC.

Neverwinter Nights Beta Patch Available

Proving their long-term support for the game, BioWare has updated the Mac version of the RPG Neverwinter Nights yet again. This version 1.67 beta patch includes a number of bug fixes for the main game, as well as the aftermarket modules available.

Here's a small excerpt from the list of changes:

# HotU: Chapter 2 - Fixed an issue that could sometimes occur during the battle in the Environs near the end of Chapter 2. You should no longer get stuck and be unable to move if the Battle Herald does not approach you and initiate a conversation with you (this fix will retroactively fix saved games exhibiting this issue, but only if you load a saved game from before you entered the Environs).
# Added 3 portraits and 3 music themes from the BioWare Premium Modules Kingmaker, ShadowGuard, and Witch's Wake 1 to game resources.
# Fixed an issue that was causing the game to slow down and become unplayable at the start of SoU Chapter 2.
# Fixed an issue with creatures some times occupying the same space. This should happen a lot less frequently now.
# Extended the glowing monk eye effect to work on all the default playable races.
