Petition To Delay Heroes Of Might And Magic V

Disappointed with the current state of the PC open beta of Heroes of Might and Magic V several fan sites have joined forces in the creation of a website and petition to delay the release of the game. With more time to polish the game the fans believe HoMM V will have a better chance of success. Some of the sites involved include Celestial Heavens, Age of Heroes, and Heroes Community.

After the rough start and continued issues of the Open Beta, and some investigation, these leaders realized that there was little time to act. Ubisoft’s fiscal year ends on March 31, coinciding with the release date. Ubisoft was also the target of a takeover bid in December of 2004, something they are not likely to forget easily. Wanting to hit or exceed their yearly targets could be a reason for the March 31 release date.

However, such short-term plans are exactly what doomed Heroes 4, New World Computing and The 3DO Company. SaveHeroes.Org is now open to try and prevent such a thing from happening.

IMG Posts New Fear and Loathing Video

Descent 2 Port Updated to Universal Binary

D2X-XL is a port of Descent 2 to OpenGL. It is an open source project and has received a lot of enhancements compared to the original Descent 2. Version 1.5.103 was recently released as a Universal Binary including the following fixes:

• Fixed menu issues
• Fixed gameplay issues
• Fixed mission download function
• Fixed song lists
• Increased convenience of menu handling
• Added new controls
D2X-XL contains support for Descent 1 missions as well, though some patching must be done beforehand. In addition, an original copy of Descent 2 is also required for play.

The latest version of D2X-XL plus more information about it can be downloaded from the official site.

Mac Version of Trainz Asking For Beta Testers

Auran developers of a railroad simulator called Trainz are asking for beta testers for their Mac version.

"Testing is about to begin on the Mac version of Trainz. We are looking for committed people with the right stuff to test, test and test some more."
Minimum requirements are:
• 1GHz CPU
• 32MB GPU
• 512MB RAM
• 1024x768 screen resolution

If you love railroads, model railroads or trains in general, then this is the game for you. This game captures the experience and flavor of working a train yard or driving a locomotive.

Otto Matic 3.0 released as Universal Binary

Pangea Software has released Universal Binary versions of Otto Matic, the Otto Matic demo, and the Otto Matic 3.0 updater. Pangea has also added support for gamepads, joysticks and the ability to customize keyboard controls.

In this game you take on the roll of Otto Matic, the robot who is given the job of saving Earth from the clutches of The Giant Brain from Planet X. There are over 10 levels, 25 different aliens, seven weapons and hours of fun.

Otto Matic 3.0 requires Mac OS X 10.4 and a PPC or Intel Mac. The full version, demo or updater can all be downloaded at Macgamefiles from the link below. Otto Matic is shareware and can be purchased for $19.95 U.S from the MacGameStore as a digital download.

MacBowl Raises Over $27,000

Today, Other World Computing (OWC) announced over $27,000 in cash and equipment was raised to benefit San Francisco's Marshall Elementary School during the annual 2006 MacBowl fundraiser. The event was co-hosted by Macworld Magazine and Aspyr Media on January 12, 2006 and administered in conjunction with the Macworld Conference & Expo.

"Other World Computing is dedicated to ensuring a better tomorrow, not just through technological developments but equally through our commitment to bettering the community," said CEO Larry O'Connor. "We applaud Macworld Magazine and Aspyr Media, and are honored to continue to be able to be a part of strengthening the education system."
Marshall Elementary School serves an at-risk community and was selected as the beneficiary of the fundraiser through the cooperation of San Francisco Unified School District Office. The school stresses a strong emphasis on science, math, and literacy.

Over the previous five years, San Francisco schools have received nearly $95,000 in financial support and high-end Macintosh computers, software, and peripherals from the annual MacBowl fundraiser.

Funds and equipment raised through the MacBowl event allow under-privileged and at-risk students to received training and access to the latest and best technologies

"Giving children access to the latest technologies that they would not otherwise be exposed to not only enriches their lives today, it opens up career opportunities for them in the future," said O'Connor, whose company services the public through web portal
The 2006 MacBowl fundraiser took place at the Yerba Bowling Center, San Francisco, and featured participation and sponsorship by leading companies in the technology field.

Lego Modeling Game Bricksmith Updated

Bricksmith a virtual 3D Lego modeling game was updated to version 1.3. Bricksmith allows you to make virtual Lego models and view them in three dimensions.

Version 1.3 adds the following:

New Features

• Multiple viewports
• Perspective in 3D view
• Preset orthographic viewing angles (front, top, etc.)
• Speed improvements of up to 40% in a single viewport
• Use the mouse for zooming, scrolling. There's both a "tool palette" and hotkeys
• Select All works
• Added a Tutorial

Bugs Fixed

• Fixed bug whereby parts could unexpectedly be rotated when moved
• Fixed crash when removing then adding certain toolbar items

Bricksmith is freeware and requires Mac OS X 10.3 or later.


Custer Needs A Hero

As is customary at this time of the week, IMG's desktop wizard, Brad Custer, has unleashed another new desktop creation. Today's creation features Fable: The Lost Chapters, the highly anticipated game from Feral Interactive.

After our MWSF feature with Feral Interactive, I received a lot of excited emails for another desktop in the realm of Fable: The Lost Chapters. As always, I enjoy honoring your requests so I return to this upcoming title. My feature was created with the help of Feral Interactive and my trusty cable modem. I simply entitled this selection, "Fable", and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did making it. :)

GravityWells released as Universal Binary

GravityWells version 0.9.2u was recently released as a Universal Binary from Makasoft. This update fixes a problem with the sound not working on Intel Macs and a problem with the music not looping properly.

In GravityWells you control a ship by manoeuvring towards an exit. The ship itself flies using a 'gravity well', which operates like a rubber band. The further you click, the further the ship will fly, but also bounce back. There are 20 levels to try.

Acropolis Reviewed

Yesterday Macworld's Game Room posted a review of Game House's Acropolis. The word based puzzle game asks players to form words from adjacent letter tiles in order to score points. The Game Room gave Acropolis 4 out of 5 mice.

From the review:

You can form words using as few as three letters, but you’re rewarded with power-ups and other treats for using five or more. Some power-ups add shuffle points, for example (allowing you to shuffle the existing board if you get stuck), or get hints. Others blast random tiles to gold, serve as wild letters, or give you extra turns.

Some tiles add challenge to the game: the triple tile, for example, turns gold only after you’ve used it in three different words. The tar tile reverts back if you use it for more than four words.

MacGLide Update Adds Game Support

MacGlide, a GNU shared library for Mac computers that emulates 3Dfx Voodoo Graphics hardware, was recently updated to 0.12.

The following was updated in this release:

• Adds FutureCop, Quake, Descent 1 & 2 to the list of fully supported games

• Gamma Correction (ColorSync has to be installed)
• Better performance (Especially in Carmageddon :^)

Bug fixes:
• FutureCop radar and dispatcher window working,
V1.02 not crashing anymore when pausing the game
• Carmagddon retro mirror working
• Carmageddon Map 3D-View working in all situations
• Fixed crash when moving the cursor in Carmageddon Movie mode
• Quake 3Dfx is working (actually it did all the time but it just wanted exactly 2M framebuffer/texture RAM)
• Descent 1 & 2 display the cockpit and instruments
• Switching between (emulated) Glide display and
Mac-Passthrough display preserves the color depth
• Full support for undocumented Delta0 mode
(no more special cases for Tomb Raider and Carmageddon)
