2:00 PM | Evan Holt | 6 comments

Ryan Gordon has posted information on his updates page regarding the Universal Binary version of Unreal Tournament 2004.

Stop emailing me for a Universal Binary version of iMac will be arriving soon, and I'll be finishing up the Intel version from there. So if everything goes smoothly, you'll have it in a few days.

I love your enthusiasm, but please, stop emailing to ask for preview builds. The answer is no.

But when it's available, this will be the first place I post news. Soon, honest.

So hang tight, it shouldn't be much longer now.

The Mac Observer: Game Companies Talk Universal Binaries
2:00 PM | Evan Holt | 3 comments

A recent article over at The Mac Observer gives us a break down of game performance under Rosetta, plans for Universal Binaries and quotes from prominent people in the Mac gaming industry.

• A Universal Binary version of Unreal Tournament 2004 might show up "in the next few days."
• Glenda Adams, Director of Development at Aspyr Media said "a few of the more recent games, like The Sims 2 and Doom 3, don't run as well". She added that Doom 3 and The Sims 2 will both receive Universal Binary patches, which will be free
• Some older games such as MacSoft's Scrabble run so smoothly under Rosetta that you would not even know that it was running in emulation
• The consensus from game companies is that the move to Intel is a good one, but they won't be moving to Intel-only games for roughly another two years.

Though not as cluttered a genre as it is on the Windows format (games such as Mall of America Tycoon, Skatepark Tycoon, and Ski Resort Tycoon come to mind), there are a fair amount of tycoon and tycoon-style games available on the Macintosh. IMG delves into the pile with some short descriptions to guide your steps into the world of the tycoon on the Mac.

MacSoft Updates Zoo Tycoon 2
11:59 AM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story

MacSoft has released a patch for Zoo Tycoon 2, bringing it up to version 1.0.1. The small patch addresses issues with the PowerBook Trackpad. Recent model Apple PowerBooks and iBooks with the new multi-touch Trackpad controllers would randomly crash due to a bug in the game's Carbon Event processing subsystem. Users not experiencing this issue will not need this update.

More Heroes of Might and Magic V Previews
7:40 AM | Anthony Wang | Comment on this story

As the Heroes of Might and Magic V release gets closer, more features are posted, this time from IGN, Gamespot, and GameSpy. IGN has a hands-on preview of the upcoming game developed by Nival Entertainment, and discusses the upgraded features including graphics and continuous story. The Gamespot feature is also a hands-on preview talks about features similar to older Heroes games and multiplayer. Highlights of the Gamespy preview include the graphics, and elements of HoMM III that have found their way back to HoMM V.

From IGN:

With the change of publisher it's no surprise that the developer has changed as well. In this case, it's not a bad move. The new developer, Nival Interactive, has made some terrific games in the past like the Blitzkrieg, Etherlords, Silent Storm series all of which have been decent at the very least. Putting Heroes of Might & Magic into their hands seems like a perfect fit.
From Gamespot:
However, the game will also feature two entirely new multiplayer modes, one of which is designed to let you sit down and play a game of Heroes in no more than half an hour. The duel mode will focus exclusively on tactical battles, and it will let you choose from a set of preconfigured armies with a certain makeup of different units, after which you can go at it in head-to-head multiplayer. Each of these armies will be fine-tuned to provide an interesting, but balanced, side to play. We tried out our own duel, and found it to be similar to challenging preconfigured chess games, only slightly faster with 100 percent more fire-breathing dragons.
From Gamespy:
All that, of course, means nothing without great gameplay -- and this is where I'm most excited. If you asked me what my dream for the Heroes of Might & Magic franchise was, I would answer, "Heroes III, better graphics." While I wasn't able to delve as deeply into the game as I would have liked, my cursory gameplay experience tells me that that's exactly what Nival has delivered. The two tier unit production chart of Heroes IV is...

Minions of Mirth Reviewed
7:40 AM | Cord Kruse | 1 comment

Gamers Info is offering a new review of Prairie Games' fantasy RPGMinions of Mirth. Allowing for both solo and massively multiplayer action, MoM is a fully customizable game which includes options for the creative to craft whole new worlds of their own. Weighing features against the game's relatively low cost, Gamers Info called MoM the best MMORPG of the last decade.

From the review:

The nicest thing about Mirth is it is entirely able to be modified with no subscription fees. It is a one time purchase and you have the game for life. You can play on the company server, just like a regular MMO… but Minions has gone one step further. You can create your own maps, zones, enemies, items. You can add your own artwork, spells, skills, classes, races… the entire game is editable. Once you have it all set up you can then host your own version of the Minions of Mirth world, or even submit it back to the company and see if they will put it into the main world. I expect in the course of the next year we will see many modded lands to adventure in; and while they will probably never become as populated as the main server, it will be nice to visit a world with new, crazy (and possibly not very well balanced) content.
