Apple Features Civilization III: Complete

Apple: Games has posted a preview of Civilization III: Complete. This preview examines the conquests in the original Civilization III, scenarios, in addition to nations in the two new expansion packs, Conquests and Play the World.

Now you can do all that, and more, with Civilization III Complete, which includes the original strategy game as well as its Conquests and Play the World expansion packs. Choose from 31 civilizations as you peruse new options (including a random feature) for customizing the game world, and ponder whether you dare attempt the new Demigod and Sid difficulty levels.

IMG has posted a review of RollerCoaster Tycoon 3, the latest game from Aspyr Media. Here's a clip from the review:

For the tycoon-game fans, RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 comes with a set of eighteen scenarios in which you must build up your amusement park and make it popular and lucrative. You can set the price of everything you can think of in your park, from individual drinks at particular stands to the cost of spending a metaphorical penny. You can keep track of all your income and expenditure, graph your figures, take out loans, determine how much is spent on all types of research, and generally be as much of a bank clerk as your avaricious heart desires. On the other hand, if all that financial micromanagement bores you rigid, you can ignore much of it and just leave it to the game to handle most of those concerns, while you enjoy looking after other less tedious aspects.

OMG Cup Winner Interviewed

The Gaming news site EvolPenguin recently posted an interview with the winner of the Original Mac Games Cup. The interview covers various topics from ideas for the game, and what issues Will Hogben ran into when programming the cub winning game, Escort Wing. Here's a snippet:

Alex: This is an interview with Will Hogben, Main Programmer of the game
Escort Wing, 1st Place Winner of the the 2005 OMG Contest. He along
with Stephen Johnson created this game in six weeks for
this contest. Will, how did you get into programming?

Will: When I was in 3rd or 4th grade I started drawing mazes in Clarisworks,
selecting a little picture of a ship, and moving it around the maze.
I sorta graded from there into programming with Director followed by

Alex: Where did your idea come from for escort?

Will: Looking back I think its a mixture of alot of old games I used to
play, Ares, EV:O, Maelstrom. I wasn’t really sure where I was going
with it as I developed it.

Alex: What things do you think went right and fell in place for escort?

Will: Well, the stats for all the ships and the levels were totally divorced
from the game, which is the first time I’ve done that and it made it
very easy to tweak ships and levels. The music Stephen produced is
amazing, and the GUI is also pretty slick. The development process
consisted of playing it alot and trying to make the game as much fun
as possible for me - something I can judge easier than theoretically
trying to make it fun for an imagined “public” so alot of decisions,
for example the decision that allies and enemies should be
statistically equal to the player, and effective, was very important
to me and led to the ability to fly other ships.

Project Magma Releases Ultimate Team Battles for Myth II

Project Magma has released Ultimate Team Battles, a multiplayer plugin for Myth II: Soulblighter. Ultimate Team Battles features gigantic battles with hundreds of troops involved, new unit sets, and of course tons of carnage. Project Magma is a volunteer organization with the goal of improving the Myth series developed by Bungie and Gathering of Developers.

ProjectMagma is proud to announce the release of our latest Myth II Plugin; Ultimate Team Battles Expansion Pack.

With 20,000 units on 50 maps, Ultimate Team Battles Expansion is perhaps the biggest mappack ever created for Myth. It contains larger armies than the original Ultimate Team Battles and brand new unit sets.

Unity 1.2.1 Released

Yesterday, Over the Edge Entertainment released Unity 1.2.1 as a free update to their 3D game authoring package. Primarily a compatibility and stability release, 1.2.1 adds support for USB Overdrive mice, improves stability of games running on Windows, adds support for some old graphics cards, and fixes a few rare bugs. Here's the full list of fixes:

  • Mouse input now works even if USB overdrive is enabled or a Wacom tablet is being used
  • The bumped specular glass refraction shader now falls back correctly where pixel shaders are not supported
  • Fixed a bug in plugin loading on Windows
  • Right mouse button is now button 1
  • Fixed a JavaScript compiler error when declaring structs inside of a coroutines
  • Fixed a crashbug when adding a rigidbody to a plane
  • Fixed a crashbug when using public multi dimensional arrays in scripts
  • Fixed a crashbug when using a huge amount of coroutines at the same time
  • Fixed a memory corruption bug when importing textures with border mip map enabled. This sometimes made Unity crash or give errors when creating a new project

First Official Eschalon: Book 1 Screenshots

Basilisk Games has posted three screenshots of Eschalon: Book 1, their upcoming single player role playing game. The first in a planned trilogy, Eschalon features a turn based combat system and a non-linear storyline. The screenshots are based on an early alpha version of the game and may not reflect the game's look upon release.

Discrimination In World Of Warcraft?

A few internet gaming blogs have reported on a press release claiming non-English speaking players, particularly those from China, are experiencing a form of discrimination in Blizzard Entertainment's popular MMORPG World of Warcraft. The press release asserts that English speaking players are requiring other players to type an understandable phrase in English before being allowed to join a party. This tactic is said to arise from the commonly held belief that many accounts used for the purpose of gathering gold for sale in the real world, an activity known as "gold farming", are controlled by players not fluent in the English language.

From the press release:

Mark MacKay an avid World of Warcraft player and owner of World of Warcraft Gold Price List Guide web site said this language bias makes no sense when you look at the statistics. He refers to Blizzards statistic that over 1.5 million World of Warcraft players are from China alone, with the majority of these players being non-English. While their has been recent publicity about the gold farm factories in China, it by no means justifies thinking that every Chinese or non-English speaking player is a gold farmer.

Mark states that he does not know how to stop this racial discrimination, but believes if people could just try to keep a more open mind and trust people a little more; this would go along way to bring some racial harmony to World of Warcraft and the World in general.
It is interesting to note that the press release was authored by the owner of a WoW price list for gold. Whether or not any widespread discrimination exists in the game will no doubt be a subject for debate. To read it and decide for yourself click the link below.
