The Intel iMac Reviewed

A review from Eric Bangeman of Ars Technica shows that the new iMac is quite a wonderful computer. The review covers most aspects of the iMac from both a hardware and software standpoint.

It also shows that although it may run most PowerPC applications fairly well, Rosetta can't handle graphics intensive programs at a decent speed such as Photoshop (although the tests were run on the Intel iMac with only half the RAM).

On a games related note, check out page six where Unreal Tournament 2004 is benchmarked. It fairs pretty poorly, but not to worry. I e-mailed Ryan Gordon and he says that he has the Universal Binary ready, however it still needs further testing on the new iMacs before it is ready for release.

Destineer Partners With Physics Engine Maker Ageia

As recently reported by MacWorld, Destineer Studios has announced plans to support Ageia’s PhysX technology in four of its upcoming games.

Destineer Studios is the parent company of MacSoft who has produced Mac hits such as Close Combat: First to Fight, Halo and Unreal Tournament 2004.

The AGEIA PhysX processor is similar to how a video card works. Video cards are a hardware product with the job to provide graphics acceleration. The PhysX processor would be a separate card with the role to crunch the mathematical calculations for in-game physics. This can be anything from the way fire or fluids act, to the way a pen could roll off a desk and fall to the floor.

As reported from MacWorld, Destineer President Peter Tamte said in a statement that his company has replaced its own home-grown physics engine with Ageia’s instead.

Considering that Unreal Tournament 2007 supports the Ageia’s PhysX technology, hopefully this is a good indication of what is to come.

HipSoft Games Interview

Gamecloud has posted another interview in their casual games series. This time the Q&A focuses on Hipsoft, creators of puzzle games such as Flip Words, Digby's Donuts, Puzzle Express, and Trivia Machine. As with previous interviews this one covers the company's origins, current games, and plans for the future.

Gamecloud - More and more attention is being given to the casual games market. What do you think of the media attention that this market is being given nowadays?

Brian Goble - More media attention is a good thing for us. Many of our customers never realized they even liked games until they tried a casual game via a free demo online. Even though they may play casual games every night for hours, many don’t consider themselves “gamers”.

Getting the message out about the success of the casual gaming market will help attract more people that just need to try a casual game for the first time to realize that they enjoy playing games.

Many of Hipsoft's titles are available for the Mac. Trial versions can be downloaded, and full versions can be purchased, from the site listed below.

Call Of Duty 2 Reviewed

The Guru of 3D has posted a review of Activision's Call of Duty 2, the intense first person shooter set during the battles of World War II. The game features improvements in graphics and artificial intelligence, promising a more immersive experience than its award winning predecessor. Guru of 3D noted that CoD 2 covers much of the same ground as the original, but found overall improvements added a punch that any FPS fan will love.

Call of Duty II presents a completely new graphics engine from top to bottom. Gone is the rather infamous Quake III engine of old, replaced by something of real beauty. The look of COD II is all about gritty realism, (which suits the type of game) rather than the souped up hyper-real flashiness of the Doom III or FEAR engine. Presenting some of the best-looking texturing in a game along with some really beautiful effects, heat peels off the desert horizon as you ride with your comrades in a jeep towards your next objective, and explosions kick up mud and dirt from the ground as you pull yourself over the top of the cliffs at Pont du Hoc. However, the pick amongst these has to be the smoke effects. These are truly the best in any game seen so far. Your smoke grenades produce a thick blinding fog that truly provide excellent cover to help you navigate around death dealing machine guns and flank enemies, taking them by surprise.
Aspyr Media recently announced that they will be publishing Call of Duty 2 for the Macintosh. It is scheduled for release in May.

Pangea Releases Nanosaur II as a Universal Binary

Pangea has released Nanosaur II version 2.0 as a Universal Binary to run on PowerPC and Intel based Macs. The minimum requirement has been raised to 10.4 for the Universal Binary, however you may still use version 1.1 which only requires 10.2.8 or later. In addition to the updater, there is also a new Universal Binary of the demo if you haven't had a chance to try this game out.

Nanosaur 2 is a continuation of the original Nanosaur storyline, yet this time you get to fly a pteradactyl who's loaded with hi-tech weaponry
