9:32 AM | Tuncer Deniz | 5 comments

Aspyr Media has released a patch for Star Wars Battlefront, bringing the game up to version 1.2 Rev A. The patch is mainly for Gameranger users, which fixes a bug that forced people to have to late-join GameRanger games. Users are now able to host a GameRanger game and everyone in the waiting room will enter the game when you launch the game.

The patch is available for download on and weighs in at 3 MB.

9:34 AM | Eddie Park | 1 comment

The freeware FPS deathmatch title known as Nexuiz has recently been updated to version 1.2.1. The update includes a number of upgrades, including a new CTF map, server fixes, and the fixing of OS X support.

The list of changes is as follows:

  • The 1.2 serverfix is included
  • runematch and domination support for all maps
  • another map to play CTF on
  • it's now possible to control the server from any connected client (password protected)
  • changed menu to show correct default values
  • MacOS X support fixed
  • many small things I forgot
Nexuiz is the fruit of a number of amateur developers who wanted to revive the basic FPS deathmatch experience. Based off the Darkplaces engine, Nexuiz features low system requirements and is under the GPL, opening it up for mod use. Those who wish to download the latest version can find several updaters at the Nexuiz site.

The Sims 2 Reviewed
9:33 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Applelinks recently examined The Sims 2, Maxis' well known simulation allowing players to control the lives of virtual humans. Brought to the Mac by the folks at Aspyr Media, The Sims 2 expands on the original with improved graphics and expanded gameplay. Applelinks gave The Sims 2 a four out of five.

From the review:

Yes, teens play a bigger role this time around. In fact, each age is well represented. Your sims' genes are passed along from one generation to the next, meaning that you can control them from birth through death. Your sims' children take on their physical and personality traits, so they actually look and behave like your creations (a revamped sim creator allows for customization of everything from body weight to skin tone to eyebrow thickness to jaw structure). It's actually a bit creepy.

Star Wars Battlefront: Is The Force Strong With This One?
9:33 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Mac Gamer has posted a review of the first person shooter with a Star Wars twist, Star Wars Battlefront. The game allows players to take part in the massive battles made famous in the movies, participating from the perspective of an individual soldier. Star Wars Battlefront made the grade with a score of 85%.

From the review:

Ground vehicles are literally a blast to operate. A.I. vehicle drivers can always be booted out of the drivers seat by real players. I experienced a thrilling sense of power taking control of an AT-AT and raining destruction on the puny Rebel defenses. I don't have a lot of experience with flying vehicles, but I would describe their flight characteristics as "arcade". Flying vehicles like the X-Wing provide variety to game-play and are controllable with keyboard and mouse. Gunships can hold up to five players.
Star Wars Battlefront was brought to the Mac by Aspyr Media. For the entire review and more information about the game check out the links below.

Urban Dead Revives Zombies in Your Browser
9:33 AM | Eddie Park | 1 comment

An IMG reader recently pointed us to a browser-based game titled Urban Dead. Created by one Kevan Davis, Urban Dead is a multiplayer game that pits humans against zombies in a grid-based battle.

Various classes are available, including civilian, military, scientist, and even zombie. Turns are based on Action Points, which must be recharged over time in order to continue play.

Some character classes start with equipment, and all characters can search to find further objects during the course of the game - some are weapons, some are one-use items, others have subtler or more permanent effects. All characters start with at least one Skill, which grants them an extra ability or bonus in the game - by gaining experience points, players can buy further skills and develop their characters.
Both zombies and humans can form groups, take shelter, and communicate with each other. Actions and dialogue are also saved for players that aren't logged on at the time.

More information, screenshots, and a character creation page can be found at Urban Dead's official site.
