Zoo Tycoon Complete Collection Ships

Aspyr's latest compilation, the Zoo Tycoon Complete Collection has shipped out to stores for Mac OS X. The package contains the original Zoo Tycoon, along with its two expansion packs, Marine Marina and Dinosaur Digs.

Marine Marina adds a number of underwater exhibit possibilities to your zoo, while Dinosaur Digs lets you create your own Jurassic Park with 20 prehistoric animals. Here are the official system requirements for the collection:

  • Zoo Tycoon runs on all iMac G4s or G5s, Power Mac G5s, Mac minis, or any Mac that meets the requirements below
  • Operating System: Mac OS X 10.2.8 or later
  • CPU Processor: PowerPC G3/G4/G5

  • Memory: 128 MB or higher
  • Hard Disk Space: 1.2GB free disk space

    IMG Interviews Power Game Factory

    IMG has posted an interview with the creator of Power Game Factory, Sawblade Software's Jesse Simko. Power Game Factory is a tool that allows those of us with little to no programming know-how to create exciting 2D shooters in the vein of classics like Metal Slugand Contra. Recently, IMG sat down with the head of Sawblade Software, Jesse Simko, to learn more about the company and Power Game Factory.

    iGame Radio Chats With Feral's David Stephen

    On tonight's broadcast of iGame Radio, the Mac gaming radio program, host Omaha Sternberg talks with David Stephen, Managing Director of Feral Interactive, about Feral's recent and upcoming titles. Also, a review of The Sims 2.

    Omaha will also offer Mac gaming news and commentary, and will take questions live from listeners in the iGame Radio chat room (AIM/iChat room name "iGameRadio").

    iGame Radio can be heard live on MacRadio from 6 to 7:30 pm Pacific Time, 9 to 10:30 pm Eastern (Tuesday from 0200 to 0330 UTC), and on demand thereafter. Listeners can tune in at the iGame Radio web page, where they'll also find archives of past broadcasts. QuickTime 5 or 6 and a 28 kbps or faster Internet connection are required.

    Game Grid Poker Released

    On Friday GamesGrid announced the release of Game Grid Poker, an online real-time poker network. Described as "the first and only" poker software specifically designed to work on the Mac platform, GGP allows members to play for free or bet with real money bets.

    "We are thrilled to be able to offer the first true online poker service for Mac users. The Mac market has been waiting for this application and this underlines our commitment to offering the best possible experience for online poker. I look forward to welcoming the Mac community to GamesGrid. Until now the only option for Mac users wanting to play poker on their computers has been to run a virtual PC emulator or to play the game in an inferior browser-based version."
    GGP was developed by CyberArts of California and is exclusively licensed to Malta based Skill Game Ltd, operators of the GamesGrid brand. The game requires a Mac running 10.3.9 or later.

    Tiger Woods 2005 Reviewed

    The Macworld Game Room recently reviewed Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005, the well known golfing series brought to the Mac by Aspyr Media. Featuring a variety of courses, a myriad of customization options, and improved visuals, TW 2005 has a great deal to offer serious golf sim enthusiasts. The game nearly scored a hole in one with a 4.5 out of 5 from Macworld.

    From the review:

    Playing as Tiger, Vijay Singh or a slew of other professionals may not be your cup of tea, however - using built-in tools, you can create a golfer in your own likeness (or in the likeness of anyone else you choose, for that matter). In addition to outfitting your golfer in custom clothes, sunglasses and other accessories, you can also adjust the body type, complexion and facial structure right down to manipulating brow height, chin length and fullness, and even the type of nose. It’s starting just how much you can do.

    As a golfer who’s just starting out on the PGA circuit, you start out with pretty limited funds and capabilities. You can improve yourself by winning bets (chip and putt sessions, for example) or by winning one-on-one pick-up games against fictitous, computer-controlled players. You can roll the money you win in these contests over into lessons or physical improvements to your game - improving your tee shots, for example, or gaining more accuracy on the green.

    The Incredibles: Rise Of The Underminer Previewed

    On Friday Gamespot posted a first look at the upcoming THQ tittle, The Incredibles: Rise of the Underminer. A sequel to the first game and to the movie, Underminer follows the adventures of Mr. Incredible and his crime fighting partner Frozone. The two superheroes must battle legions of robots and other bad guys as they seek out the evil Underminer. Skillful use of both heroes' abilities will be a must if players are to help the duo succeed.

    Part of the fun in the game is determining which hero is best for taking out a particular enemy. Mr. Incredible is all about pure, unbridled power, as he wades through enemies through sheer muscle alone. Frozone, on the other hand, is sleeker and faster thanks to his ice-based powers, and even though he probably can't bench as much as Mr. Incredible, he can still certainly pack a punch. In fact, against certain enemies or traps, Mr. Incredible will be basically ineffective, as instead he'll have to depend on Frozone's chilly powers to come to the rescue. A host of robotic bad guys, for example, makes for a ripe target for Frozone's freezing spray, which slows down the evil automatons long enough for Mr. Incredible to get in there to bust some bolts. Frozone is also deft at traversing otherwise impassable ravines by quickly whipping up an ice bridge, thus letting the duo cross gaps it might not otherwise be able to cross.

    Dual Stubbs Previews

    As Stubbs The Zombie ambles ever closer to release more previews appear from the shadows to entice with tales of undead gameplay. Today we have two more previews, one from GamesRadar and another from ActionTrip. In addition, both reviews are accompanied by ghoulish new screenshots.

    From the GamesRadar preview:

    The setting takes some explaining. Stubbs isn't just a failed salesman, he's a salesman who failed during the Great Depression.

    His resulting death left him buried in the dust of a Pennsylvania field, and saddled him with all the bitter desperation of The Grapes of Wrath and Glengarry Glen Ross combined.

    His miserable grave is disturbed, however, when 25 years later a local entrepreneur builds a city of the future on top of it, all flying cars and '50s optimism. Stubbs awakes, and two key moments in American capitalist history collide in a frenzy of brain-eating and limb-wrenching.

    Sound serious? It isn't at all. The game draws on its real-world inspiration with gentle affection and the result is funny and fresh, and that deftness carries on into the gameplay.

    From the ActionTrip preview:
    The stage is set for Wideload’s 3rd person action game. The curtains have been pulled and what ensues is a lot of George Romero-esque screaming, graphic, yet inherently offbeat violence, and some really funny encounters between the living and the zombies. First thing you got to know about Stubbs the Zombie is that the game features some really expressive voice acting and a killer soundtrack of upbeat-sounding 50s tunes, performed by contemporary artists, to which Stubbs is performing his killing and brain-eating. That alone gives the game plenty of personality – I was always a big fan of scenes where cheerful tunes (like, um, “Singing in the Rain”) are accompanied by images of excessive violence. The soundtrack includes performances by Ben Kweller, The Raveonettes performing My Boyfriend's Back, and Cake doing a take on Strangers in the Night. Other performers include: Rogue Wave (Everyday), Death Cab for Cutie (Earth Angel), The Dandy Warhols (All I Have to Do Is Dream), Oranger (Mr. Sandman), The Walkmen (There Goes My Baby), The Flaming Lips (If I Only Had a Brain), Clem Snide (Tears on My Pillow), Rose Hill Drive (Shakin' All Over), Milton Mapes (Lonesome Town), and Phantom Planet doing The Living Dead. All of these songs you are probably familiar with, except for the last one, The Living Dead, which is an original tune.

    Darwinia Q&A

    After several positive reviews on the PC side Introversion's Darwinia is receiving renewed interest. Most recently Next Generation interviewed lead designer Chris Delay about the ups and downs of being an independent developer. Part of the interview focuses on the company's inability to gain a publisher in the U.S. despite accolades from the gaming press.

    Even though Darwinia’s critically acclaimed by respected publications such as PC Gamer, U.S gamers can’t go to our local store and pick it off the shelf. What are some of the difficulties in distributing Darwinia to a large audience?

    Publishers aren’t really interested. That’s the bottom line. We are big enough to self publish in the UK, but the USA is around ten times larger and we just don’t have the staff. The only way for us to reach the U.S shops would be to find a U.S publication deal, and we’ve shown Darwinia to a ton of publishers with that aim, but none of them have shown any significant interest.

    Having said that, we can now offer immediate downloads of purchased products from our Darwinia website – so American customers can buy and play immediately without having to wait for delivery.

    Where do you see Introversion in the future?

    Right now we have the creative freedom we always wanted at Introversion, but we’re not as stable as we’d like. Our last game took three years to make, and if we ever release a game that bombs under that model we’ll be out of business a few months later. Each of our games has to pay for two or three years for the next. My aim for the future of the company is to start taking on more parallel projects – all with equally small teams of two or three developers. This means we can be more prolific (we’ve got about a decade of game ideas here at Introversion), but it also means we can release games more often, which should help to stabilize things a bit.

    Universal Boxing Manager 3D Released

    Macworld recently reported that Winter Wolves Studio has released Universal Boxing Manager 3D for Mac OS X. An updated version of the earlier UBM, UBM 3D gives players a chance to step away from the arcade action of other boxing games and take a jab at a managing sim. Would be managers can handle multiple boxers with different skills and abilities while juggling the minutia of training, hiring, and ring tactics.

    Universal Boxing Manager 3D isn’t an arcade-style boxing game; instead, it’s a boxing manager simulation. You can manage up to six different boxers in 17 different weight categories, each with different statistics and skills. You search for new talents, arrange fights, buy new training tools, hire doctors and help your boxers in the ring by suggesting tactics that will let them win against their opponents.
    The full version of the game costs $24.95 and requires a Mac with OS X 10.2 or later, a 600 MHz or faster CPU, 64MB RAM, and an OpenGL graphics card with at least 8MB VRAM.

    The Battle for Wesnoth Updated

    The Battle for Wesnoth was recently updated, bringing the current version to 0.9.7. The Battle for Wesnoth is a fantasy-themed turn-based strategy game. Players build up and army of hardened warriors to use later in custom tailored battles. The game features single-player campaigns and even multiplayer games. From the Wesnoth website:

  • Many bug fixes in preparation for version 1.0
  • AI now understands how to use After Max-Level Advancement
  • AI recruiting greatly expanded for multi-player eras
  • Improved graphics for Goblin Impaler, Gryphon, Gryphon Master, Gryphon Rider
