World of Warcraft to Expand in 2006
7:55 AM | Anthony Wang | Comment on this story

GamerGod has posted an interview with Shawn Carnes of the World of Warcraft development team. This interview focuses on the growing popularity of the game and the changes already implemented and future innovations such as a possible expansion next year. As reported by IMG yesterday, it is now evident that World of Warcraft is the most explosive and largest MMORPG ever and is growing everyday.

Furthermore, the article also mentions Blizzard's intentions with RMT (Real Money Trading) and advertisments in the game. Below are selected excerpts from the interview.

With WoW as a clear success, an expansion is a no-brainer to follow up on the success. What are the plans for this?

An expansion is planned, not in 2005, possibly in late 2006 barring unforeseen chaos. Work is already going on for the expansion, and it's going good. What to look for?

Blizzard is good at polishing what we do well. The WoW expansion will be like other game expansions in that there will be new characters, items, spells, etc. but it will have the Blizzard twist...

Digital Distribution of Games
7:55 AM | Anthony Wang | Comment on this story

With the growth of broadband internet and sheer convenience and cost of downloading instead of publishing discs, manuals, boxes, and cases has sparked a rising usage of digital distribution services. Some games and companies have already embraced this technology such as Half-Life and Virtual Programming. File Rush has posted an article looking into the horizon of game distribution. The article highlights several companies who have decided to or plan to use digital download services to distribute their games, updates, and other software. In addition, the article offers two interviews with Valve Software and 3D Realms over the changing landscape of game distribution.

Digital Distribution (also known as Online Delivery) is the next step for game developers to get their games into your hands. Digital Distribution consists of the end user downloading and registering a developer created program to pay for and download games to their computer. This eliminates the middle man (i.e. publisher), maximizing profits for the game developers. In turn, this gives the developer the capacity to keep design control and...

...Two other companies have recently announced plans to distribute their titles digitally. Microsoft Game Studios has stated that they have tapped the company Exent Technologies for their Games-on-Demand services. Electronic Arts has also mentioned...

...In the end, will Digital Distribution work? In time, it will. The more money that developers get into their hands, the more freedom they will have to create innovative titles. Digital Distribution in the coming years will aid in shifting control from the publishing executives to the game designers...

New Black and White 2 Screenshots
7:55 AM | Blake Buck | Comment on this story

IGN recently posted several new screenshots of Lionhead Studios' latest game, Black and White 2. Black and White 2 is the sequel to the tremendously popular Black and White, in which players assumed the role of a god vying for control of loyal suspects. The sequel takes a more war-like approach, and introduces some new real-time strategy elements.

The game is currently slated for an October 4th PC release. While no official announcement has been made about a Mac version of the game, given the popularity of the original, a Mac release is a definite possibility.

Making Of Myst V Documentary
7:55 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Turner Broadcasting System Inc., and its subsidiary GameTap Entertainment, recently announced the development of a behind the scenes documentary for Ubisoft's upcoming Myst V: End of Ages. The documentary, which will be packaged with the Limited Edtion of the game on a bonus DVD, will tell the story behind the Myst franchise and focus on the creation of its final adventure.

"Gamers are like the toughest film fanatics: they want more than a technical look at the making of a game. They want to see the compelling story behind its creators, the challenges and triumphs of the creative process," said Michael Watchulonis, Executive Producer for GameTap Entertainment. "We at Turner have learned a lot over the years by producing signature original programming for CNN and Cartoon Network and are excited to apply these skills to the gaming industry; specifically an innovative, breathtaking and cinematic game like Myst V: End of Ages."
TBS will also show a more limited version of the documentary on its upcoming Gametap service, a broadband entertainment network that offers games on demand plus original programming via a broadband connected PC.

Myst V is scheduled for release on September 20. The limited edition Mac version of Myst V: End of Ages is available for pre-order through for $59.95.

Darwinia Reviewed
7:55 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Gamespot recently reviewed Darwinia, Introversion Software's unique real time strategy game. Brought to the Mac by Ambrosia Software, the game drops players into a virtual theme park populated with creatures who are in need of rescue from a deadly virus. Gamespot gave Darwinia an 8.3 out of 10.

From the review:

The gameplay is solid here as well, and it offers a good mix of strategy, action, and even a bit of puzzle-solving. You can't directly control the Darwinians, but you can create different programs that you can use to fight enemies, collect spirits, or herd and transport Darwinians. By holding the Alt key, you'll bring up the task manager, which is the simple menu system that you can use to create and modify units and check the level objectives. To create a program, you simply draw a gesture with the mouse. For example, to create a squad, which you need for fighting enemies, you have to draw a triangle. The controls do take a bit of getting used to, but it's worth it to leave the play screen free of the usual clutter of RTS games.

Civilization IV Unit Promotions, New Screenshots
7:55 AM | Cord Kruse | 3 comments has posted a short article explaining a new feature for Firaxis' upcoming game Civilization IV. The new unit promotions feature will expand upon Civ III's system to give players a wide range up upgrade options for veteran units, some of which will apply only to specific unit types.

In Civ III, unit promotions involved rising in level from green to veteran to elite and each level added a hit point and a small combat bonus. For Civ IV, we decided to build on this system and make promotions much more intricate and customizable by allowing players to choose from over 20 different bonus types (many with multiple levels, for a total of over 40 available promotions). The numbers and types of available bonuses differ per unit type and only land and sea military units can acquire them (air units are different).
Civilization IV is scheduled for release on the PC sometime in November. There is no word on a Mac version of the game yet but the series' history with the platform makes it a strong possibility. S2 Games Announces Savage 2: A Tortured Soul
7:55 AM | Cord Kruse | 1 comment

After keeping fans in suspense with a cryptic website message, S2 Games has finally revealed their new title. Savage 2: A Tortured Soul, the sequel to Savage: Battle for Newerth, will continue the first game's unique hybridization of real time strategy and first person shooter gameplay. S2 promises improved graphics and a host of new game play options.

Here are some of the planned features:

- Fully Dynamic Self Shadows
- Higher Quality Models
- Higher Quality Animations
- Bump Mapping and Pixel Shaders
- Realistic Reflective Water Effects
- Point Lighting
- Enhanced Spell Effect System

- More Control For Action Players
- Improved Melee System
- More Battlegroup Officer Based
- FPS Fast Action Paced Gameplay for Certain characters
- Third Person RPG Accessible GamePlay for others
- Better Items With More RPG Element
- Enhanced Spell Casting System
IGN went in search of more detail on the upcoming game and posted their findings in a recent article. In addition to the significantly improved graphics the game will also feature more unit classes from which players can choose.
If you'll remember Savage gave players five classes to choose from, with only one of those available at the beginning of any particular game. As money and experience were gained, players could access the rest, but it wasn't exactly a huge selection of units, especially for an RTS type of game. To that end, Savage 2 will use a 20 unit class based system that should create more variety and strategy to who chooses what units in battle. S2 is saying that certain types of units will be much more focused on run and gun type of gameplay while others will suit a more slower paced style of RPGish gameplay.
Savage 2 is scheduled for release on the PC sometime in the summer of 2006. A discussion thread on the official message boards revealed that S2 has no plans to develop a Mac version of the game in-house. Since the first game was ported by an outside developer (Virtual Programming Ltd.) this doesn't rule out the possibility of a Mac version. Keep an eye on IMG for any updates to the game's status.
