Mac EverQuest Trial Now a Free Download
7:38 AM | Andy Largent | 11 comments

The Mac OS X version of the ground-breaking MMORPG EverQuest is now available as a free trial download from Sony. This download requires broadband, as it needs over 2GB of hard drive space in order to play properly (the Mac Edition contains the original game plus four expansion packs).

Previously, those wanting to try out the game were required to find an increasingly rare boxed copy of the game and then manually obtain a key from the Mac EverQuest developer, Hobart.

This is seen as a bitter-sweet token from Hobart, who also announced recently he is moving on from his current position at the company. While the future of the Mac version is "up in the air," he notes he is working to help ensure someone can fill his role in the future. Hobart also makes the call out to any developers familiar with the game:

If anyone here has any development experience with Mac and are extremely familiar with EQ and might be interested in helping whoever takes over EQMac, please send me an e-mail with your experiences. I'll be sure to gather this information so it can be passed along.
For more information, head over to the EQMac forum thread. Also be sure to login to Sony's page to download your demo copy of EverQuest if you haven't already.

IMG Posts Star Wars Battlefront Review, Video Review
1:28 PM | Tuncer Deniz | 5 comments

Inside Mac Games has posted a review of Star Wars Battlefront, published by the Mac by Aspyr Media. The written review is also accompanied by our very first video review (QuickTime 7 required).

Here's a clip from the review:

lefront is an action game featuring both single-player and multiplayer. Single player is just you as a member of one of two opposing teams, with all other units controlled by the computer. Multiplayer involves two teams of up to 32 total human players, possibly with additional units controlled by the computer to fill out the teams. (I'll have more to say about the computer controlled units in a bit.) Either way, your team must capture and hold command posts around the map to give the enemy fewer places to drop reinforcements.

Play Doom On Your iPod
7:38 AM | Cord Kruse | 2 comments

The iPod Observer is reporting that the creative folks at iPodLinux Project have made it possible to play the original Doom on an iPod Photo. It requires an install of podzilla to allow users to boot into Linux in order to run the game.

Playing Doom on your iPod requires running podzilla on your iPod, though 4th generation color screen iPods are not (yet) actually supported by the iPodLinux Project. Such is the nature of an open source project where users are free to take whatever risks they wish, and there are images of the game being played.
