Hellgate: London Interview, Mac Version Mentioned
7:33 AM | Blake Buck | Comment on this story

Hellgate Planet recently posted an interview with Flagship Studios' Bill Roper about their new game, Hellgate: London. Hellgate is a post-apocalyptic first person shooter set in London. While technically an shooter, the game is more akin to an action-RPG such as Diablo II. Flagship games was founded by several ex-Blizzard employees, and Hellgate: London will try to re-invent the genre that Blizzard created several years ago.

The interview covers several topics, including character development, inventory mangement, and online play. Perhaps most interesting to Mac gamers however is Roper's answer to a question about a hybrid PC/Mac release.

Bill Roper: Macintosh gamers are a dedicated and passionate group, and we made a point while at Blizzard to bring them games on their platform of choice. We have yet to make a decision in regards to how the Mac will be supported, but we’ve already started conversations with the Apple game evangelists to talk about what they have up their sleeves over the next months and years. Apple’s switch to an Intel-based chipset makes some elements of creating a Mac version much simpler for PC developers, but a focus of Flagship has been to stay a small, focused team. All I can say is that we are seriously evaluating our Macintosh plans and as soon as we come to a concrete decision one way or the other, we’ll let you all know.
While no official announcements have been released, the possibility of a hybrid disk on an A-List game like Hellgate: London is quite exciting for Mac gamers.

IMG will have more information on Hellgate: London as it develops. To see the entire article, click the link below.

Interview with Andy Keane of AGEIA
7:32 AM | John Telthorst | 6 comments has posted an Interview with AGEIA's Andy Keane. AGEIA is developing a Physics Processing Unit, or PPU, called PhysX. The interview covers technical specifications of the PPU card, the interface, several examples of PhysX in action, and more:

Techgage: Due to current limitations of even the highest end CPU's, they cannot handle the extreme physics in the demos you've showcased. With the introduction of Dual Core CPU's, is there now less of a need for PPU?

Andy Keane: No. In fact, there is a great benefit to pairing Dual Core CPUs with a PhysX processor. Even if you use the full bandwidth of the Dual Core processors, games can only display about 1,000 rigid bodies. The PhysX processor will handle up to 32,000.

PhysX is an exciting development for computer gaming, but particularly the Mac platform. Apsyr is one of AGEIA's featured partners and it has been announced that a Mac software development kit will be released. Both are great news for Mac Gamers. With AGEIA's Mac supportive stance, in contrast to Havok, the success of PhysX would likely lead to an increase in the number of games ported to the Macintosh platform. Head over to for the full interview.

Diablo on Speed
7:31 AM | John Telthorst | 2 comments

How long did it take you to beat Diablo, a fews days, a few weeks, a month? Dave Gibbons beat it in a number of minutes, 53.13 to be exact. If you don't believe it you can download the movie for yourself from the Speed Demos Archive In case you want to try your own speed run, Dave includes some commentary on how he pulled it off, here's a snippet:

This is by far the most random game I've ever attempted to speed run. Similar to my Diablo 2 run, I simply played ahead and saved the character files so I had perfect knowledge. I had lucky map layouts, good quests, and good monster combinations overall. The good thing about this method is that in single player Diablo's drop system will give the same items from the same monsters, chests, and book shelves every single time.
You'll need Divx to view the video. If you don't already have it you can download the Mac version from If you've never played Diablo the Battle Chest is available from

Take Two, Rockstar Sued By 85 Year Old Grandmother
7:28 AM | Cord Kruse | 18 comments

In the continuing saga of the "Hot Coffee" mod scandal, it may come as little surprise that the first lawsuit has been filed against Take Two Interactive and Rockstar Games. Florence Cohen, an 85 year old grandmother, is alleging in a lawsuit filed in the Southern District of New York on Wednesday, that she was "damaged" after learning of the sex mini games hidden in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Until the revelation of the pornographic content in the game she had believed the game purchased for her grandson was only a Mature rated title.

Her complaint seeks class-action status for purchasers of San Andreas and relies on four causes of action; the complaint accuses Take-Two of committing or engaging in "Consumer Deception" (based on New York State General Business Law statutes, section 349), "False Advertising" (based on New York State General Business Law statutes, section 350), "Common Law Fraud," and "Unjust Enrichment."

Damages sought are in excess of $5 million, the complaint says. Cohen is seeking a jury trial to determine culpability.

With a Federal Trade Commission inquiry into Take Two's advertising of GTA:SA already underway, the lawsuit comes as unwelcome news for the beleaguered company. It remains to be seen whether the firestorm of controversy will ultimately hurt or help Take Two's bottom line, however. For more information on the lawsuit click the link below.

Neverwinter Nights Community Expansion Pack Updated To 1.52
7:27 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

The Community Expansion Pack for BioWare's Neverwinter Nights has received an update to version 1.52 to make it more compatible with the newest version of NWN. Users of some fan made persistent worlds and modules which use the CEP will want to download the update to take advantage of the fixes.

Although its taken us longer than ever before to patch CEP, the newest version of the Community Expansion Pack is now available for download. This version includes all the features of previous releases and is fully compatible with NWN v1.66.

With a very special thanks to Lisa of the DLA team, CEP v1.52 includes 71 fixed human female heads. This is a vital feature for those using the CEP as recent changes that BioWare made to improve NWN caused virtually all community made custom heads for human females to look strange. It wasn't intentional. CEP v1.52 has the fixes though.
The CEP is a free expansion to Neverwinter Nights and is wholly created by fans. It is a compilation of some of the best items, scripts, creatures, and portraits offered by the game's legions of creative followers. More information about the CEP can be found at the link below.

Gamespy Previews Fable: The Lost Chapters
7:27 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

GameSpy has posted a preview of Lionhead Studios' upcoming Fable: The Lost Chapters. An expansion of the original Fable, released exclusively on the XBOX, Lost Chapters will add both new content and the ability for PC and Mac users to enjoy the experience alongside their console brethren.

Lead Designer Dene Carter told us to expect lots of unique additions and enhancements in the PC version of Fable. The colorful graphics, for example, should look better than ever, with texture sizes doubled, support for up to 16x anti-aliasing, and screen resolutions "up to pretty much whatever your monitor can support."

Speaking of visuals, the PC version will let you edit your hero's tattoos with your favorite paint program for real self-expression. Light-hearted new clothes, like the Chicken Hat, are "guaranteed to utterly undermine the solemnity of any occasion." We got a kick out of some of the new hero expressions, too, like the ever-popular Cossack Dance. More importantly, the core story will be expanded to flesh out the main characters and also offer surprising new choices for you later in the game. You'll also get to explore new areas, like a whole new village in the Northern Wastes -- provided you can survive new monsters like ice trolls and magically animated suits of armor topped with human skulls.

PlayMyth Will Stay
7:25 AM | Anthony Wang | 6 comments

The future of PlayMyth is safe for now. Back on July 12th, the popular web site had announced it was considering closing shop because of the amount of player abuse has reached a level where the admins are no longer willing to deal with it.

Blades, the head honcho over at PlayMyth has posted that PlayMyth will be here for awhile. However, he says that the server will now be taking a zero tolerance stance against troublemakers meaning no warnings whatsoever. Also, players will be able to report abusers and give feedback in a new system that PlayMyth is currently working on.

The good news is that for now PlayMyth will remain as it ever has - as one of the bedrocks of the Myth Community. We will continue to function and operate as a light post to those who wish to play this game in a competitive, yet fun and non-abusive atmosphere. We'll be following up with some information on new ways to report troublemakers and provide feedback to administrators in a future post. (very soon).
