Mac OS X Tiger On Sale April 29

Apple today announced that it will begin shipping the much-anticipated Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger on April 29th at 6 PM during special events at Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers. The new OS includes over 200 new features and innovations such as Spotlight, a desktop search technology that lets users instantly find anything stored on their Mac, including documents, emails, contacts and images.

The single license for Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger will be available for $129. Apple is also offering a Mac OS X Tiger Family Pack, a single-residence, five-user license that will be available for $199. The Mac OS Up-To-Date upgrade package is available to all customers who purchase a qualifying new Mac system on or after April 12 for a shipping and handling fee of $9.95.

Torque Ragdoll Animations; Moore to Present at WWDC

A ragdoll animation pack has recently been released for the Torque Engine. Created by Chris Calef, the pack contains 72 animation sequences designed to simulate reactions from explosions of varying power and location as well as code mods to choose sequences.

As pointed out in the accompanying article, there are several reasons to use pre-defined ragdoll over realtime:

Networking - Realtime ragdoll is notoriously difficult to handle in a multiplayer game, because the positions and velocities of all moving bodyparts must be transmitted across the network, vastly increasing the network traffic. The solution offered here involves no additional network overhead.
In other GarageGames news, Jay Moore has been invited to give some presentations at the upcoming WWDC 2005. His panels will include "Casual Downloadable Games" and "The Mac as a Game Development Platform." These presentations will be part of WWDC's Game Connection, which will be a special area devoted to game developers and key Apple staff members.

WoW Character Moves Re-enabled, China Preorders

Blizzard has re-opened character transfers for realms with high populations. As with past ones, the transfers allow players on high-density realms to transfer to designated realms that are less populated.

The current list of eligible realms and their destinations are as follows:

Warsong (PvP) -> Bonechewer (PvP)
Arthas (PvP) -> Nathrezim (PvP)
Bleeding Hollow (PvP) -> Crushridge (PvP)
Illidan (PvP) -> Stonemaul (PvP)
Blackrock (PvP) -> Daggerspine (PvP)
Stormreaver (PvP) -> Stormscale (PvP)
Shattered Hand (PvP) -> Bloodscalp (PvP)

In other news, the pre-order scene is apparently a great success in China, with most locations being sold out of advance copies in a few hours. Blizzard has provided some pictures at the WoW China site of hungry fans lined up at stores.

Advertising in Video Games

The New York Times has posted an article about a new agency that specializes in allowing companies to advertise their products and services inside video games. The agency, Massive, is pushing to make advertising in video games as prevalent as sporting events and Times Square.

Currently the technology that Massive has developed only works with PCs connected to the Internet. But Mitchell Davis, chief executive of Massive, says that eventually the technology will work in Xbox and PlayStation 2 online games.

The technology is a far cry from Spot drinking 7-Up drinks. Massive's technology downloads new advertising information from the Internet to keep the ads fresh in the game. A billboard that displays an ad for T-Mobile one minute might be displaying an ad for Axe body spray the next.

While many companies think that this is a boon for advertising, other's are more skeptical:

"I don't want to pick up a sword and have it read Nike on the side," said Jeff Evertt, a video game player and programmer. But less intrusive product ads would not necessarily bother him, he said. Brian Fisher, another gamer and programmer, agreed.

"If the character drinks a Pepsi to get health points, it doesn't bug me," Mr. Fisher said.

Both Mr. Fisher and Mr. Evertt, who work at different video game studios, said they would be concerned if advertisers tried to dictate how and when the ads appeared.

"I don't want to have to go to Nike and get approval," said Mr. Evertt, speaking hypothetically.
