Ambrosia Releases Darwinia
7:17 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story

Ambrosia Software has officially released Darwinia for Mac users. Originally created by Introversion Software, Darwinia puts players within a virtual universe populated by a sentient life form known as Darwinians, which must be protected against a rampaging viral infection.

Darwinia features a Tron-like environment, complete with fractal landscapes, sprites, and creation commands that are issued by tracing specific patterns with the mouse.

Nearly three years after taking the underground gaming scene by storm with Uplink, Introversion and Ambrosia Software have teamed up again to release Darwinia. Combining fast-paced action with strategic battle planning, Darwinia is a real-time strategy game like no other.
Those interested in trying this title out can download a free demo from MacGameFiles. The file is sized at around 32MB, and carries a shareware fee of $29.00.

IMG Reviews Darwinia
1:20 PM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story

IMG has posted a review of Ambrosia's just released Darwinia. Here's a clip from the review:

Darwinia's best attributes are an innovative world and story-line featuring characters, sounds, and other elements from classic video games such as Space Invaders, Centipede and Tetris. It may not be the genre-breaking or genre-defining title its most ardent supporters claim, but it is a vastly different use of existing game elements. Players also control relatively few units compared to most strategy games, a sure way to become more attached and devoted to them.

Darwinia Interview
7:17 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story

Adding to the coverage of Darwinia, Computer Games Magazine has posted the results of a short Q&A session with Chris Delay of Introversion Software. The interview focuses on the unique title, trying to pin down a classification and discussing various aspects of its development.

One of the development points behind Darwinina is its learning curve, which Delay points out is intentional:

We wanted to make a game that didn't ram the instructions down your throat. We did add a tutorial to the latest demo to help people get into the game, but even then we don't explain everything. Part of the fun is discovering the world.
He also notes that it took a surprising amount of time to create objects, even when working with low-poly models. On the publishing front, he adds that finding publishers in the U.S. market has been a bit of a challenge.

Future plans for Darwinia include a number of free patches which Delay notes will add content to the game. He further adds that work on a new title will start soon, though it won't be a sequel to any previous Introversion titles.
