Freeverse Announces Kill Monty
9:31 AM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story

Freeverse has announced Kill Monty, a fast-paced arcade shooter in the tradition of classic arcade game such as Smash TV. The game's premise is pretty simple: shoot anything that moves. A free demo version is available for download. The full version, once registered for $12.95, unlocks more levels and weapons such as the flame thrower.

Here's more from the press release:

In the tradition of such extinction-level events as Asteroid Impacts, Super-Novas, and Ashlee Simpson Christmas Albums, Freeverse proudly announces Kill Monty, the game that spanks your adrenal gland and makes you call it "Papi".

With multiple levels of non-stop shooting and bucket after bucket of red food-coloring, (we have our family-friendly image to maintain after all), Kill Monty is the perfect quick gaming fix. It's also quite a bargain, priced at only $12.95

The Story features exactly two words, so it won't over-tax your higher brain function, or be an impediment to our literacy-challenged customers. (SimStapler High Scorers take note)

After you've tried the demo and purchase the game, you'll get access to the Flamethrower which throws flames and the Railgun which guns rails... or something. Anyway, its supercool and its only for the Mac!

Microsoft has made another hit with the Wireless Optical Desktop Comfort Edition, and only those with outrageous personal experiences would have any reason to dislike this sleek set. Barring a few installation woes, this desktop combo performed without a hitch, and it is my favorite keyboard and mouse combo I've used to date.

Stubbs the Zombie Previewed
9:31 AM | Marcus Albers | Comment on this story has posted a preview of the Xbox version of Aspyr Media's Stubbs the Zombie. Stubbs is being developed by Wideload for release on the PC, Macintosh, and Xbox later this year.

Stubbs is being designed around the Halo engine, so players will know what to expect from a graphical and control standpoint.

The preview goes through the back-story of the game, and talks extensively about what to expect from the gameplay. The article talks about how Stubbs' lack of ability to wield weapons doesn't necessarily hamper him in any way:

Stubbs also has a secret inside of him, though. He is able to use his own decaying innards as an explosive weapon! By taking a little piece of his heart, or whatever organ he happens to reach in and grab, Stubbs can launch a “gut grenade” which will explode in a toxic green cloud and scatter anything and everything within the blast radius. There’s another explosive, toxic surprise that Stubbs has inside of him: unholy flatulence. I don’t know if you ever been near a zombie when it passes gas, but judging from the stunned victims it leaves behind, get far away when a zombie breaks wind!
Head over to to read the full preview and check out some new screenshots of the game. Stay with IMG for further information about this promising title as the release draws near.

Doom 3 Mac Tweaking Guide
9:31 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story

Hot on the heels of the shipping of Doom 3, Bare Feats has posted a performace tweaking guide for players looking for performance gains. Much talk has been circulating in the Mac gaming community surrounding the system requirements and publicized benchmarks surrounding the anticipated FPS, and the guide seeks to show how best to tweak Doom 3 without sacrificing too much in visual quality.

One of the suggested tweaks deals with ATI cards specifically:

We used ATIccelerator II to overclock the Radeon X800 XT (core clock set 5% faster to 500MHz and memory clock set 10% faster to 1100MHz) in an attempt to get it up to the performance level of the Radeon X850 XT we used on the Dual Xeon. (This was done on a closed course by professionals. Don't try this at home.)
For those looking for a little more information regarding the performance of Doom 3, Bare Feats has included an exerpt from Glenda Adams regarding optimizations and the key differences between Macs and PCs in relation to them. They've also included information on how folks can run their own benchmarks at home.

A fairly busy thread on Doom 3 performance is also available in IMG's forums. Information from various notable sources such as Peter Cohen and Glenda Adams can be found there.
