Cap'n Magneto Returns
11:56 AM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story

If you owned a Macintosh back in 1985, you might remember a game called Capn' Magento. Some 20 years later, Al Evans has re-released the game to work on modern Macs.

Here's more from the press release:

Cap'n Magneto is a comic-book graphic adventure game for the Macintosh. It features plenty of action, fighting, puzzles, surprises, and funny creatures.

In it, you are Captain Lance Magneto, pulled to a crash landing on an alien planet by a strange force from an ancient relic, the Crown Of Control, wielded by an intergalactic pirate called The Menturg. You awaken under an apple tree with only three apples, three small bags of costume jewelry, a rusty oil can, and a strange device with the letter "Z" on it. In the distance to the East, you see the wreckage of your ship. Your mission is to recover the Crown Of Control, find and repair the Menturg's hidden space ship, and escape from the planet.

Cap'n Magneto's outstanding feature is the unequalled richness of interaction with the computer-generated inhabitants of the planet. Thanks to a unique game engine called GameWorld, each kind of creature has its own characteristics of friendliness, bravery, and reliability. Many also have special talents, abilities, and propensities.

Cap'n Magneto has been called "the precursor of the graphic adventure". It was the first adventure game designed specifically for the Macintosh, and the first that could be played entirely without using the keyboard.

Cap'n Magneto is $20 shareware and runs on any PowerPC-based Macintosh running System 7.5 through Mac OS 9.2, and will also run under Mac OS X (via the Classic environment). The game works best with speech enabled.

No UT2005 in the Works
9:43 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story

In a brief but pointed statement, Beyond Unreal has gone on record that publisher Midway Games has firmly stated that "there will be NO UT title shipped in 2005." This statement counters the recent sightings of some online retailers showing an Unreal Tournament 2005 in their up-and-coming listings.

The "no UT in 2005" statement most likely is meant to cover the possibility of a UT2005, as Xbox fans will probably note that Unreal Championship 2 is set to release in just over a month.
