Cause Of IMG Downtime Yesterday 11:52 AM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story
Many of you may have noticed that yesterday IMG experienced about a 24 hour downtime. The cause of this was an attack by a "web worm" that defaced html and php files on IMG. It defaced our files by using a perl script thanks to a vulnerablity in the freeware forum software we used called PhPBB. The clever script has to ability to search Google and find other PhPBB forums to infect. This is actually the second time our forum was attacked due to a vulnerablity in the forum code. Folks, we're not going to let it happen a third time. IMG will no longer be using PhPBB and we'll be switching to a more robust and feature rich forum. It may take us a couple of days to set up but it will be worth the wait. All forums posts have been preserved and no data has been lost. Please note that this was not a specific attack on IMG but rather part of an attack on any web site that used that particular forum software. We also want to insure all our readers and customers that at no time was any personal or financial data ever comprised. Tuncer Deniz Publisher
Bannister Emulator Enhancer, Modeler Update, Taking Time Off 11:28 AM | Marcus Albers | Comment on this story
In his latest post on his news page at bannister.org, Richard Bannister made some important announcements. The first was to announce the release of a new version of his Emulator Enhancer, a shareware add-on that gives additional video and control options to many of his freely available emulators. This update brings Emulator Enhancer to version 1.5.4, and features enhanced joystick code. The second announcement was the release of an updated version of Modeler, a Sega System 32 and Model 1 arcade emulator. The new version is at 0.9.4, which adds support for the game Outrunners, among others. The third, and most unfortunate announcement is that Richard is going to be taking some time off. Here is what he had to say about the situation: One of the joys of working on Emulation Projects is frequent nuisance e-mails. I have been receiving these for years, and keep an archive of them ready for eventual addition to my web page. Of late, though, these have been supplemented by some very offensive and hurtful comments, both in private mail and on public message boards. With a little more sleep and time to myself, I probably would have brushed these off, but to be frank, they have hit home. After long days in the office, I've come home to messages that have instantly left me in a bad humour. Though normally calm, I've become short tempered and irate, both online, and, I'm sorry to say, in real life. This should not be interpreted as a reaction to any one message or post. It is very much a cumulative thing that has been building for most of the last year. I have decided that I need some time off from my Emulation projects and from all the baggage that goes with them. We can only hope that Richard will come back to the Macintosh emulation community after some well-deserved rest. Head over to bannister.org for more information on Richard's numerous emulation projects.

Sillysoft has recently bumped Lux up to a new version. Now at 4.51, the update brings with it a few small fixes, including the following: - Fixed a bug that would cause some guests to still see the 'Winner is...' message after the next game was started. - Fixed a bug that would cause remote clients to lose any armies they had in flux when they ran out of turn time. Based off the boardgame Risk, Lux features cross-platform online play, allowing gamers to wage war in a game of world domination. Free demos for Windows, OS X, and Linux are available at Sillysoft's site.
