X-Plane Soars to Version 8
7:49 AM | Tim Morgan | Comment on this story

General aviation sims may come and go on the Mac, but X-Plane, the highly extensible GA sim from Laminar Research, is still chugging along, now at version 8.0.1 (version 8.0 was never publicly released). The new version includes a laundry list of new features, of which the most notable follow.

The biggest change in version 8 is the new scenery capabilities. Says Austin Meyer, creator of the sim, "We are designing a completely new scenery format, providing a totally disordered, adaptive set of polygons to fit any terrain... Countless buildings and other landmarks are overlaid on the terrain using adaptive algorithms that fit the buildings to actual street-maps, resulting in neighborhoods that actually follow REAL roads". Along with new scenery flexibility comes flexibility for aircraft designers, who will enjoy an expanded number of options for perfecting their aircraft's shape and structure. In addition, gamers will appreciate the new 3D cockpits and better graphics from low-Earth orbit. The complete list is extensive (as with all of X-Plane's major releases) and is available at the X-Plane website.

Soon to follow will be the release of the version 8 scenery, which updates the global scenery to take advantage of the new scenery engine.

X-Plane is a modular, customizable general-aviation flight simulator that allows pilots to take many kinds of aircraft to the sky (or design their own). X-Plane includes aircraft from the Cessna 172 to the screamin' X-15, and includes normal, orbital, and Mars flight.

Scourge Available for OS X
7:49 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story

An open-source title recently brought to our attention is Scourge - Heroes of Lesser Reknown. A work in progress, Scourge takes a common RPG formula and has a bit of fun with it, putting players in control of some down-and-out adventurers who must resort to janitorial duties in order to make a living.

Our heros are hired by overlords, evil sorcerers and underworld bosses to exterminate pests occupying old dungeons, haunted towers, and other future centers of world domination. While working for the daily mutton, group members battle alcohol, decrese of self- confidence and loss of integrity. It is an epic battle of mental and psychic proportions, to which I'm sure most players can relate.
Scourge boasts features such as randomly generated dungeons, multiple missions per level, and a party of 4 controllable characters. It's also completely free, and those interested in trying it out can find download and installation instructions at the official Scourge site.

Apple Flies with F/A-18 & Enemy Engaged
7:49 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story

Apple has posted a feature on two war flight simulators made available for the Mac. The first, F/A-18: Operation Iraqi Freedom, allows gamers to tackle various missions in the war on Iraq, while the second, Enemy Engaged: Comanche vs. Hokum, leans more towards an open campaign involving helicopter combat.

Both games, however, find common ground in two areas: both strive to accurately simulate air combat F/A-18 tackling fighter jets and Enemy Engaged addressing helicopters and both used publicly available satellite data to create realistic maps for players to fly over. In fact, Razorworks and GraphSim encountered similar problems trying to stitch the satellite data into cohesive landscapes.
Details discussed in the feature include the various multiplayer features, the realism of each title, and the various campaign modes. A link to an Enemy Engaged demo, as well as a tips page for each title, is also provided.
