Solarian II for OS X
8:31 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story

Old-school Mac gamers should be familiar with a little shareware title known as Solarian II. Due to customer requests, Stick Software has ported the popular shooter over to OS X, complete with graphics and sound effects intact.

Solarian II was first written about 15 years ago, and was one of the first color games for the new color Macs that came out in 1988. It ran happily for years, but Mac OS X broke it — it never ran well under Classic. We kept getting email about this, and so we've ported it to Mac OS X. It's now a native Cocoa app (!), and should be good to go for another 15 years, we hope!
Solarian II currently requires OS 10.3 or better to run. Those interested in trying it out or registration info can find it at Stick Software's site.

8th Wonder of the World Announced
8:20 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story

e.p.i.c interactive has recently announced that 8th Wonder of the World will be coming to the Mac. A sequel to Northland, 8th Wonder continues the RTS play of its predecessor, pitting Bjarni the Viking against another oncoming evil.

The one of the wise men came across some old writings which mentioned a way to fight the evil. A long and dangerous way, because only if the Eight Wonders of the Would were built again could darkness be banished and the evil defeated. The greatest heroes of the past were summoned. The people addressed our friend Bjarni, who at once set out to save humanity from a fatal fortune again with his wife Cyra and their son Mani...
8th Wonder is currently listed as being in Final Candidate status, and e.p.i.c. expects to have it out "very soon." More info on the game itself can be found at their site.

Custer Races In With A New Desktop.
8:09 AM | Brad Custer | Comment on this story

This morning, IMG's Brad Custer brings you another all-new desktop. This week's desktop features Ford Racing 2, the upcoming racing simulation from Feral Interactive. Here's what Brad had to say about his latest desktop entitled, "Accelerate":

This week is a first for me. I made a rare appearance in the IMG irc channel a few weeks back to be greeted with a request for a desktop from Ford Racing 2 by Feral Interactive. Of course I'm happy to honor any request even the live version. :) In this week's feature I wanted to create a desktop based on the GT. This is a nice looking vehicle and I can't wait to test drive one.
To download the desktop picture, head over to Custer's Desktops and select the size of your choice.

Apple Tracks Railroad Tycoon 3
7:32 AM | Conrad Quilty-Harper | Comment on this story

Apple has posted an in-depth feature on the latest game from the Railroad Tycoon series. The feature takes a quirky style from a player in a bad financial situation. There are plenty of other goodies available at the site, including screenshots, movies, cheats and a sitdown talk with the game makers on the subject of how they made the game.

Here's a section to whet your appetite:

When Steinmeyer and his team at PopTop Software sat down to design and build Railroad Tycoon 3, their efforts were not unlike those of the hobbyists who have erected scale model train sets for decades. As Steinmeyer says: “[The game] is a great complement to the hobby: it includes a wide variety of locomotives and rolling stock that a hobbyist would be hard pressed to duplicate on his own.
Head over to Apple's website to read and see more information about the game. Railroad Tycoon 3 is now available from the IMG Store, available to buy at the link below.

ArcadeMac Releases Space Strike
7:32 AM | Jean-Luc Dinsdale | Comment on this story

New shareware developers ArcadeMac have released their first major game; the space-themed side-scroller Space Strike.

The Mac-only title harkens back to the the old arcade-style side-scrollers from the '80s. Players pilot a ship through dangerous space scenes, shooting at a non-stop throng of alien ships, otherworldly insects, carnivorous mutant plants, and natural space debris. Various powerups, which boost player's shields, firing power, and lives, are dropped from enemy alien ships as they get destroyed.

The shareware title, which supports both OS X and the Classic operating systems, features 12 different alien worlds for players to shoot their way through, five difficulty modes, and two different game types. The full version of the game costs $17.49 USD; players interested in checking out the title can download the 4.6 MB demo from the link below -

UT2004 Editor's Choice Edition Bonus Pack
7:32 AM | Jean-Luc Dinsdale | Comment on this story

As a thank you to fans of its Unreal Tournament 2004 online first person shooter, Epic Games has released its Editor's Choice Edition Bonus Pack. The bonus pack contains six new characters, three new vehicles, and four unique new Onslaught maps.

Players wanting to get their hands on this new loot from the game's developers first need to update their copy of UT2004 to version 3323 if they haven't already done so. Players can then download the 84 MB file from the links below, un-archive the self-extracting .exe file by either changing the file extension to ".zip", or by using a third party un-archiving utility like Stuffit Expander, and manually install the new maps, characters, and vehicles by copying the files from every folder in the Bonus Pack to the appropriate application folder.

For players who have yet to custom install any UT2004 maps by hand, here are the instructions from the official MacSoft support web page:

Adding custom UT2K4 Maps

If you want to add custom (3rd party) maps to your UT2K4 folder do the following:

  • Find your UT2K4 application icon.
  • Control-click or right-click the icon.
  • Click Show Package Contents.
  • A window appears containing the folders you seek.
  • Add the appropriate files to the correct folders.

Here is an extension list of UT2K4 extensions and appropriate folders.

    .utx > Textures
    .ut2 > Maps
    .ogg > Music
    .uax > Sounds
    .usx > Staticmeshes
    .int > System
    .u > System

  • Only once all the file shave been copied from the Bonus Pack into the appropriate folders will players be able to fully enjoy the Bonus Pack's full complement of new vehicles, maps, and characters. Readers having trouble installing this new patch should head over to the IMG forums, where a UT2004 ECE Bonus Pack thread is already underway:
