Call Of Duty: United Offensive Announced
8:37 AM | Jean-Luc Dinsdale | Comment on this story

Only a few days after the release of the PC version, Aspyr Media has announced that they will be publishing the Mac version of the highly-regarded Call of Duty: United Offensive expansion pack.

Developed by Gray Matter, United Offensive follows a similar format to the original where players square off against Nazi invaders playing the part of three different Allied soldiers: a US paratrooper, a British SAS commando, and as a Soviet infantryman. While the expansion pack keeps up the cinematic grandeur of the original, the stakes are taken up a notch as players face off against increasingly more intense and difficult firefights against the opposing forces.

The new expansion pack offers thirteen new intense single-player missions, and eleven new multiplayer maps, all larger than even the greatest multiplayer map from the original. Taking a cue from Battlefield 1942, the new expansion pack also offers support for vehicles and new multiplayer modes, as well as a slew of news weapons, characters, and a new collection of single-player puzzles for gamers to contend with.

Call of Duty: United Offensive is currently listed as being in Early Development, and is expected to ship in November. Click on the link below to access Aspyr's United Offensive mini-web page, and stay tuned to IMG for further news and an upcoming preview of this new title.

Sims 2 Q&A With Will Wright
6:00 AM | Conrad Quilty-Harper | Comment on this story

An article including a Q&A session with Maxis founder Will Wright has been posted over at CNET The article starts with an introduction for Will and a brief overview of Maxis' history in the gaming world, from which we got such gaming classics as SimCity and The Sims. It then leads into a detailed question and answer interview on the latest from Maxis; The Sims 2. Many of the questions are based around the psychology of the 'sims' within the game. It seems that the developers have gone to great lengths to try and emulate real people and their emotions.

Here's an extract from the Q&A:

Question: It seems as if there's a lot of psychology behind this. How much of an education do you have in that?

Answer: Enough. We found that it's a lot easier for us to research a topic than it is to take experts and teach them about game development. When it comes to psychology, we looked at hundreds of different theories, and the thing is that none of them are right. They all capture some little element of the truth. So what we end up with is a smorgasbord of various bits and pieces of theory that help clarify parts of the game. The basic needs are coming from Maslow, the personality side is roughly Myers-Briggs, the childhood-to-adult transitions are more Freudian.

British Prime Minister Backs Violent Game Inquiry
6:00 AM | Conrad Quilty-Harper | Comment on this story

British Prime Minister Tony Blair is backing an investigation into violent games after calls for action from Leicester MP Keith Vaz. This latest round of controversy has been caused by accusations that the Rockstar PS2 title Manhunt is responsible for the murder of 14 year old Stefan Pakeerah. According to the police, the console game was found in Stefan's bedroom, despite it having an BBFC rating of 18+. Stefan's parents are quoted as saying Manhunt acted as an "instruction manual" for the murder.

Mr. Vaz told the House of Commons in Prime Minister's Question Time: "The parents of the victim believe that the perpetrator of this savage attack was influenced by the video game Manhunt.

He urged Mr Blair to commission new research into a possible connection between video games and violence and to meet with a delegation of concerned parents.

6:00 AM | Jean-Luc Dinsdale | Comment on this story

As part of their on-going promotional efforts for .Mac customers, Apple has announced a two-part exclusive offer for subscribers of their popular online service.

Until November 10th, .Mac members can download an exclusive free demo of Aspyr Media's web-crawling adventure Spiderman 2: The Game, and are also eligible for a ten dollar discount for their very own copy of the game.

The demo, weighing in at just under 170 MB, can be downloaded from the .Mac website, and will soon be available on member's Software folder of their iDisks. Players running into problems installing the installer need to copy the .zip file from the virtual disk to their own hard drives in order to successfully complete the installation.

UT2004 Voice Over IP Experimental Patch Released
6:00 AM | Jean-Luc Dinsdale | Comment on this story

Epic Games' multi-platform programmer and all-around good guy Ryan Gordon has posted a new Voice over IP patch for Unreal Tournament 2004.

The experimental patch, which wasn't included in the recently released 3323 Mac update, implements the audio capture code included in Apple's OpenAL libraries, allowing competing players to communicate verbally to each other during intense online matches. From Gordon's .plan file:

I implemented ALC_EXT_capture in Apple's OpenAL, so you can use UT2004's VoIP feature with their nice surround sound.

The 3323 patch didn't ship with this, since there were some crashes in their implementation (the nasty "this happens after about 90 minutes of playing" type that are a pain to track down). We'll get this sorted out and eventually ship a patch that includes this.

Head over to Gordon's .plan file to check out the status updates on all the projects currently under his stewardship, and to download the patch for yourselves. Gamers beware, however: this patch is an experimental piece of code which doesn't include an installer, and has the potential of undermining your UT2k4 installation.
