Brad Custer has once again delivered a new game-related desktop. This week's image features the upcoming World of Warcraft, Blizzard's latest venture into the immensely popular Warcraft series. Here's more from Brad on the subject:

If you've spent the last few years in a coma that might explain the only reason you don't know about this highly anticipated game. It was just over 3 years ago that Blizzard Entertainment announced their plans to release World of Warcraft. I finally obtained the proper artwork to honor the countless requests I've received for a desktop dedicated to this game. In this week's feature I wanted to focus on one of the more popular races in the game - night elves.

Ubisoft Announces Shadowbane: Throne of Oblivion
8:58 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story

Ubisoft recently announced that another expansion pack will be forthcoming for its MMORPG Shadowbane. Titled Throne of Oblivion, the expansion will add a number of new features, races, and classes to the mix.

A high point in the expansion seems to be the addition of undead legions, including the ability to play as part of a vampire race:

In addition to the new strategic systems, Shadowbane: Throne of Oblivion will feature extensive new player options centered around an invasion from the Lands of the Dead. Shadowbane: Throne of Oblivion marks the first time in an MMORPG that players can play Vampire characters. The Vampiresí clothing and armor will spotlight their supernatural power and allure and demonstrate the appeal of these creatures while exploring a new visual direction for Shadowbane.
In addition, new classes such as the Necromancer and Nightstalker will be available, and existing disciplines and classes will also be tweaked in response to the addition of the undead forces.

Throne of Oblivion currently has a target date of November 30th, with a retail price of $19.99.

In related news, players on the Corruption, Mourning, and Vengeance servers may want to get a little more playtime in this weekend:

After the morning restart on Friday, September 10th, we will be increasing the experience gain on the Corruption, Mourning and Vengeance servers. This will revert back to normal with the restart on Monday, September 13th.
Ubisoft also notes that the server instability problem has been identified and will be implemented once it passes testing.

OpenGL 2.0 Specs Released
8:58 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story

The specs for OpenGL 2.0 have been posted for interested parties. Released on September 7th, this latest iteration includes programmable shading, multiple render targets, and point sprites.

Here's a bit more on the shading language itself:

The OpenGL Shading Language is a high-level, C-like language used to program the vertex and fragment pipelines. The Shading Language Specification defines the language proper, while OpenGL API features control how vertex and fragment programs interact with the fixed-function OpenGL pipeline and how applications manage those programs.
The post also notes that 2.0 is upwardly compatible with previous versions, meaning that programs using pre 2.0 builds will still run under the latest iteration.

More information on all the specifications can be found at the OpenGL site.

Blizzard Drops WoW Trade Skills for 'Professions'
8:58 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story

The official World of Warcraft site has recently announced an upcoming change to the current beta. Trade skills, which allow players to pursue the creation of various objects and so forth, are being renamed as "professions." In addition, the system itself is undergoing some changes, chief among which seems to be the limiting of pursued professions to two per player:

You will no longer learn different professions by paying for them with skill points. You'll still learn them by speaking to the appropriate profession trainer. However, players will now be restricted to learning two professions. We decided to change the skill system to make it simpler, balanced, and more intuitive. The new system should allow everyone to participate in one to two professions, and create a much more vibrant market for goods generated from professions.
For those currently in the beta, Blizzard adds that players with more than two trade skills should decide which two they wish to keep. Otherwise, two will be selected at random when the next patch rolls around.

More information on the upcoming change can be found at the official WoW site.
