Close Combat: First to Fight Trailer Released

MacSoft's parent company, Destineer, has released the first official trailer of its upcoming team-based tactical shooter, Close Combat: First to Fight. The QuickTime trailer for the first time shows off the game's impressive visual effects and realistic gameplay.

Close Combat: First to Fight is an authentic, team-based first-person shooter created under the direction of active-duty United States Marines fresh from the front lines of combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. Set in a modern mid-eastern urban battleground, players lead a four-man Marine fireteam through the perils of modern urban combat. Together with the United States Marine Corps and Atomic Games, Destineer is creating First to Fight as a training simulation for use by the Marine Corps and will be released in late 2004 for Xbox, Macintosh, and Windows.

Carmack Looks To The Future

John Carmack, one of the world most famous game creators that is responsible for classics such as the Doom and Quake franchises recently spoke at QuakeCon about the recently released DOOM 3. The internet magazine GameSpy has now posted a summary of his keynote where he speaks of the limitations and the future of the DOOM 3 engine, as well as giving hints for the future of id Software.

Carmack, filmed while sitting in front of a telescope and a myriad of electronics, kicked off his talk by speaking about where DOOM 3 stands today. He pointed out that cutting-edge game developers frequently have to try to predict where the consumer hardware technology will be at four or more years in advance -- after all, DOOM 3 took four years to create. Most of the early decisions he made turned out to be the right ones, so overall DOOM 3 is hitting the market with the right technology at the right time.

Custer Enlists A New Desktop

IMG's Brad Custer has created another desktop fit to grace the screens of your Macs. Titled "Special Forces," this week's artistic creation is an homage to America's Army: Special Forces, the popular realism-based game from the U.S. Army:

America's Army: Special Forces from the U.S. Army is more than just a game. And this is only confirmed by the amount of email I see weekly about this game. I've overlooked making a desktop for this game until now. This week's desktop is inspired by the men and women serving our country daily to allow us a life of freedom.

America's Army Working As Recruiting Tool?

Further to Tuesday's news on the upcoming update for the U.S. Army-backed first person shooter America's Army, gaming website Game Daily has posted a lengthy chat with AA Associate Producer David Kozlowski.

Kozlowski comments on the game's growing community, the possibility of pushing the franchise beyond just the first person shooter genre, and whether or not other branches of the military have expressed interest in developing their own versions of the game.

The most pressing question, however, of whether or not America's Army is succeeding as a recruiting tool, get answered by Kozlowski in a slightly indirect manner -

Has the game helped with recruitment?

David: Awareness of the Army's missions, opportunities and values are our primary goals. The game serves as a great communication tool to get young people talking about the Army and looking into opportunities within the Army. Recruiters have told us the game has opened many doors for them and is a great icebreaker for them when talking with possible recruits.

In addition, many of our members are either Active Duty Soldiers or Veterans of the Armed Forces and through our Web site forums and in-game chat we've observed that Soldiers/Vets spend a lot of time and energy describing the military to our non-military players. It's really pretty cool to read a post from someone who's thinking about joining the Army asking an active-duty Soldier what Airborne school is really like or how realistic the M16A2 modeled in America's Army compares to its real-world counterpart - the free exchange of information between members of our Community is astounding. As a veteran myself I was stunned by how authentic the Marksmanship training is modeled within America's Army - our development team has really captured the atmosphere of the Army.

The game, which comes packaged in a staggeringly huge 743 MB file, requires, at minimum, a 700 MHz G4, 256 Megs of RAM, and a Geforce 2 or Radeon 7500 graphics card. Got the bandwith? Duke Nukem Still Has A Pulse

Back on June 28th 2000, IMG's Andy Largent wrote that 3D Realms' Duke Nukem Forever was "rivaled ... only by Bungie's Oni as the game longest in development without tangible result."

Well, it's been over four years since that statement, and hopeful Mac gamers have seen many new PC game ports on the Mac. The sci-fi, anime-style third person shooter Oni is but a mere memory in the back of most of our minds. Yet, rumor on the street is that 3D Realms' Duke Nukem Forever, which most cynical gamers had long since abandoned all hope for, is apparently still in development, and is crawling closer to completion.

PC gaming website Voodoo Extreme has posted a quick interview with George Broussard, President of 3D Realms and Action Entertainment. Despite the rumors, Broussard assures his readers that a 25-person team is working on the title, and there's still promise for the first person shooter yet.

After throwing out 95% of the work that had been completed back in 2002, Broussard states that the step, although unfortunate, was a necessary one, and will lead to an even superior game:

Were they really wasting time remaking the game with a new engine?

George Broussard - Never fear. As I said before, we were never even close to shipping, so it isn't as if we threw stuff out just because we were being too picky. We basically re-evaluated things, stepped back, tossed a lot of stuff out, fixed some problems and grew up a little in regards to development in the process. We took that opportunity to reset our goals when where we wanted to go, and we had the ability to do it - this time.

The end results will be nice. We've been solidly on track for a long time now and just churning away. We're working towards and end and it will be in your lifetime.
