Ultima V: Lazarus Revived as DS Mod
8:05 AM | Andy Largent | Comment on this story

A team of enthusiasts dedicated to reviving the classic Ultima Role-Playing Game series has released an alpha demo of Ultima V: Lazarus. Instead of just reproducing the original fifth installment of this RPG classic, the group has instead recreated the game by making it a modification for Dungeon Siege.

Lazarus hopes to expand the original title's gameplay while upping its graphics into the fully 3D environment of the Dungeon Siege engine. Here are a few goals the team has:

[Lazarus] will have brand new graphics, CD-quality orchestral music (including re-mastered versions of the original U5 music plus some new pieces--you can hear an early version of our re-mastered "Stones" on the TAPESTRY page), improved and expanded dialogue, and a much more "alive" design for the Underworld, amongst other improvements.
The alpha demo is available now for Mac and PC, though you must have a full working version of Dungeon Siege in order to play. There are also localized versions for German and French gamers to choose. Have a look around the Lazarus site for more information on the game or to check out screenshots.

Ambrosia Releases Snapz Pro 2.0
10:06 AM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story

Ambrosia today announced the release ofSnapz Pro X 2.0, a major upgrade to their screenshot utility that now allows users to capture high quality video. Snapz Pro X 2.0 now features a video capture engine that is 20x faster than any other product on the market. In all, there are dozens of new features in the new product.

Here's more from the official PR:

In addition to a video capture engine that is 20x faster than anything else on the market, Snapz Pro X 2.0 boasts dozens of other new features that you'll quickly wonder how you lived without. We did not follow the industry trend of bloated software with extraneous features; instead we rethought the product.

Snapz Pro X 2.0's interface has been completely redesigned to provide more powerful features while maintaining Snapz Pro X's elegant simplicity. Rather than just tossing new features into an already full-featured product, we carefully examined how people use Snapz Pro X, and developed a new user interface that adds functionality without adding complexity.

For those who need static screen captures for manuals, web sites, etc., Snapz Pro X 2.0 offers many improvements. One of the most useful is "Live Preview" which shows you exactly how your screenshot will look before you save it to disk. This allows you to change border styles, scaling, cropping, and other settings on the fly. Instead of guessing what your screenshots will look like, you can get them right the first time.

Snapz Pro X supports saving screenshots as .bmp, .pict, .gif, .jpg, .png, .tiff, .pdf, or Photoshop files, with precise control over image compression. Screenshots can be scaled, cropped, color depth-changed, and dithered. Snapz Pro X can also add borders, generate automatic thumbnails, overlay watermarks/copyright notices... you name it, we got it!

Snapz Pro X 2.0 costs $69. Upgrades from Snapz Pro X 1.0 w/ movie capture are $20. To download your copy of Snapz Pro X 2.0, head over to Ambrosia's website.

Freedom Force Sequel to be Self-Published
8:57 AM | Mike Apps | Comment on this story

Irrational Games, makers of the superhero tactical RPG, Freedom Force, recently announced that they'd be venturing into new territory by publishing the sequel to the game themselves.

IGN got a chance to sit down with Ken Levine from Irrational Games and chat about why they chose to go the self-publishing route. Here's a snippet from the interview :

IGNPC: So what exactly is the publishing status of Freedom Force vs. The Third Reich, both here in the States and abroad?

Ken Levine: Irrational Games has decided to venture into new territory by self-funding the development of Freedom Force vs. The Third Reich. In the near future, we will start the process of selecting a co-publishing/distribution partner, both in North America and internationally. This is a huge task that has not often been explored by developers. We've received many nice queries from great publishers, and even went down the road considering proposals, but in the end, we decided it was better for us, better for the product, and better for the fans to do it this way.

Though there are no current plans for a Mac version of the sequel, we're hopeful given the existence of the first game for OS X. To read the full interview, follow the link below.

State of Shadowbane Posted
8:05 AM | Andy Largent | Comment on this story

UbiSoft has posted another State of Shadowbane article, giving a glimpse into the current status of this Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG), as well as where they are hoping to take it in the future.

The article discusses the recent opening of the game to European players and the Rise of Chaos expansion, both of which have been deemed a success so far. They also touch on exploit usage and how they plan to crack down on those players not being fair to others, and where the team is hoping to take Shadowbane in the near future:

We have another major patch scheduled for February, which will focus almost entirely on bug fixes and balancing. The Shadowbane team has been gathering the most critical issues from our players on the forums and in support petitions. We have been collecting the worst of these problems into a "most wanted" list so that we can eradicate them in February. Topping this list is lag and sb.exe error crashes. Memory leaks are another hot item in line to be worked on, as well as some class and race love that has long been requested. We will be discussing the entire list of changes, fixes, and balancing improvements in our Developer Chat next Tuesday.
The chat mentioned there is happening this afternoon at 5:00PM EST on IRC if you're interested. Check out the rest of the article for more on Shadowbane.
