Rayman 3 Demo Released

Feral Interactive today released a demo of Rayman 3. In the game, you charge into intense strategic battles with the crazed Hoodlum Army and massive transforming bosses. The demo is available for download at Macgamefiles.com and IMG Pro users through their Hot Downloads page.

MacSoft's Peter Tamte Talks Halo Piracy, Patch Issues

The recent release of the 1.03 Halo patch has caused a bit of a stir among some Mac users. In addition to bug fixes and improvements to the game, the patch now includes a CD check for Halo. When you launch Halo, it now makes sure you have the CD in the computer. This was done in response to the massive amount of pirating of Halo since its release. Some Mac users, however, don't like the decision.
We recently contacted MacSoft's Peter Tamte to discuss their decision and why these steps were necessary.
IMG: As you know, some Mac gamers have been complaining about the fact that the new 1.03 Halo patch includes a CD check. Could you explain why this decision was made?IMG would like to thank Peter Tamte for his generous time.
Tamte: Almost all PC games and a huge number of Mac games (including many earlier MacSoft games) do require a CD be inserted to play. We initially didn't do this with Halo because we felt it just punishes the people who have purchased the game. However, the massive theft of Halo online has forced us now to adopt a variety of copy-protection schemes, and a CD-check is integral to all of these copy-protection schemes.
IMG: Do you have an estimate as to how many copies of Halo may have been pirated?
Tamte: We can only physically track less than 10% of the piracy, and we have physically tracked more units of Halo being stolen on the Internet than have been sold through stores so far.
IMG: Why wasn't a CD check implemented in the initial release of the game?
Tamte: We really, really don't like punishing the honest people who have purchased our games. We got dragged kicking and screaming into copy-protection by the large number of people who are apparently comfortable stealing Halo on the Internet.
IMG: How rampant is piracy on the Mac? Is it more rampant than say on the PC side? What sharing network is the primary
source of piracy for Halo?
Tamte: I don't think Mac piracy is more rampant than PC piracy. As for which file-sharing network is the primary source for Halo -- asking this is like asking which pimp can get the best hookers. I know there are legitimate uses of peer-to-peer networks. But, since the vast majority of their use is to trade stolen merchandise, I don't want to direct any more people their way.
IMG: Some shareware game companies on the Mac have embedded code into their programs that check to see if their software is using a valid serial number. When launched, the program connects to the Internet and to the company's web site, and makes a check to see if it is using a pirated version. If it is, it simply refuses to run. Do you think MacSoft and other gaming companies need to start doing this in order to prevent piracy?
Tamte: Yes, it is very likely you will see these -- and other -- forms of copy-protection in the future. It is terribly unfortunate that the honest people will have to waste their time with copy-protection. But, there are just too many dishonest people willing to steal games on the Internet now.
We're trying to understand why people who would never steal a game from CompUSA feel it's ok to steal the same game on the Internet. Either way, it is illegal. Either way, it means the people who created the entertainment YOU enjoyed didn't get paid for their hard work. Either way, it causes fewer games to get released.

Aspyr Releases Jedi Academy Dedicated Server

Aspyr today released a small application that allows Mac users to host their own multiplayer Star Wars: Jedi Academy games. The dedicated server is designed for server administrators running remote installations of servers, or for servers that do not have the proper video card to launch the game normally.

One on One With Glenda Adams Returns

One of the more popular features at IMG used to be the One on One with Glenda Adams features we used to present about ever month or so. The feature was a conversation between myself and then Westlake president, Glenda Adams. After she moved to Aspyr, we decided to put the feature on hold while she got acclimated at working at popular software company.

Freeverse Software recently posted their January issue of MontyMail, their monthly online and email newsletter. In the newsletter, the company provides details on ToySight shipping, a Burning Monkey Casino demo, and its new distribution deal with e.p.i.c. interactive. In addition, the company has posted new details and screenshots on two of their upcoming games, Wingnuts 2 and AirBurst Extreme.

GameSpy Continues WoW Chats with Blizzard

GameSpy has added to their coverage of World of Warcraft, the upcoming MMORPG from Blizzard, by sitting down with Assistant Designer Jeff Kaplan and firing off some interesting questions. The topics covered range from guild hall operation to the overall potential of the world itself.
One of the questions broached concern the economics of WoW. Past experience has shown that inflation can be an issue with MMORPGs, and WoW hopes to sidestep that by providing a host of spending opportunities:
Obviously, one of the best ways to curb inflation is to provide consistent money sinks. We can do this in a number of ways, including scaling training costs, giving additional perks such as added bank space or player mounts, and core gameplay mechanics like guild founding fees or guild tabards. Also, many spells and abilities will require consumable reagents or items.Kaplan also notes that WoW will be extremely quest-oriented, with certain quests being available only during World Events.

Majesty Artist Interview

Strategy Planet recently got to sit down and talk with Scott LeBlanc, one of the major artists for the classic Strategy game Majesty. The interview gives a great deal of info about LeBlanc, his inspirations, some of his favorite games, etc. Here's a snippet:
I did not begin on my Commodore 64 when but a wee lad. As a matter of fact, I didn't even take typing in high school nor have a desire to go anywhere near a computer until I met my wife-to-be 11 years ago. At that time, I was as traditional as they come and wanted nothing to do with a push button tool . . . and at the time my wife was using a 512k MAC to do here reviews for a laser disc magazine! Phelios Dev Tool 'PTK' Adds 3D Support

Phelios has recently updated PTK to version 1.30. A game engine that allows programmers to create 2D multi-platform titles, the latest version adds 3D support, enabling it to either add 3D effects to 2D titles or to act as a framework for 3D games.

Phelios - PTK
- 3D - .ase reader (currently supports 1 non animated Mesh - 1 Texture), Milkshape ASCII reader (in beta), animations can be achieved by keyframing (several 3D objects sharing the same texture). Web commands to send web queries / download files (example: online highscores like Swap).
- PTK's built-in sound engine named, "KSound" runs in both Mac and PC platforms and reads the following formats: WAV, OGG, XM, MOD, S3M & IT. Due to several requests and the lack of sound engines existing for the Mac platform, Phelios decided to offer KSound as a separate module for Mac programmers who use an SDK other than PTK.
- Color-Keying in addition to alpha channels (simplify the port of PC DirectDraw apps to Mac OS X)
- Better Video Memory handling (Rectangular texture support if available)
