Warcraft III Mac 1.14b Patches Posted
6:22 AM | Jean-Luc Dinsdale | Comment on this story

Blizzard Entertainment have released patches for their popular real-time strategy games Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and its expansion, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne.

The minor patch, labeled version 1.14b, weighs in at 17 megs for the english version and almost thirty megs for the localised versions, and incorporates the following changes:

  • Fixed an issue with recalling control groups and quickly pressing 'TAB' to change your selected subgroup.
  • Fixed an issue with custom save games from version 1.12 (including those from Orc Act I) so Hero Agility is recognized properly. Attack speeds will now be correct when loading from a previous save game.
  • Fixed an issue that caused Scroll of Town Portal to always place your units to the lower right side of your town hall instead of the location you clicked.
  • Fixed an issue with the Skeletal Mage upgrade that prevented the Raise Dead skill from working on the corpses inside Meat Wagons.
  • Fixed an issue that caused a unit to permanently lose 75% of its attack speed if it was Polymorphed or Hexed while under the effects of Unholy Frenzy.
  • Fixed an issue with Spirit Link in which, if one of the linked units was a Troll Berserker with the Berserk ability active, all units linked with that Troll would take the increased damage penalty associated with the Berserk ability.
  • Fixed an issue in which, if a unit casting a channeling spell died from Mana Flare, the channeled spell would linger in the area permanently.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the Call to Arms command not to work if you clicked the button an EVEN number of times.
  • Fixed an issue with Hero and unit ability orders in which, under certain conditions, ability orders would not be dispatched properly, causing "lag" or unresponsiveness.
  • Fixed an issue that caused Glaive Throwers to lose damage when the Vorpal Blades upgrade was researched.
  • The patch also includes balance changes for the Undead and Night Elf characters, as well as adjusting damage and reward points for Neutral Units and Heroes.

The 1.14b path is available in two forms - one file for players of the original game, and a seperate file for players who have installed the expansion set. Click on the link below to grab the file -

    GameSmith 3.4.2 Released
8:44 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story

Freeverse has recently updated GameSmith, its online networking library for its various titles. The update, which brings it up to version 3.4.2, addresses several bugs and adds some enhancements:

    • The game list now shows most games from other rooms. Only for games hosted by fairly old clients does this not happen. (The really old clients do not send notifications of their hosted game to all players, only to players in the same room as they.) This change helps makes it much easier to get into games regardless of which room you may be in.
    • The Game Info dialog has been updated to better match the look and feel of the Player Info dialog. It also now includes information about which room a game is hosted from.
    • Added new /save command which saves chat to a file on the desktop. You can just use /save by itself or you can supply a file name: /save myfile. In this case emoticons will be lost. If you have the Mac OS X developer tools installed you can use the -w command to save it in WorldText format which will then save the emoticons. (So either /save -w or /save -w myfile)
    • Improved the /version playername command. It now reports version information for all games that player is logged in with.
    • Improved the /find playername command. It now reports room information for all games that player is logged in with.
    • Added Control clicking text items in the Player Info dialog. You?ll now get a Contextual menu with options to copy the text to the Clipboard and to open links if appropriate.
    • Double clicking a game that is not full and a different type than yours still tells you ?you?re playing Spades, you can?t join a Hearts game?. But now there is a button in alert message that can open Game Info (which is probably why you double clicked).
    • Fixed a bug trying to Host a game while already involved in a game as a joiner. It would basically end up kicking you out of the game you were in. Now it asks you if that is really what you want to do.
    • Fixed a problem with Local games where you could not join a game that was on your local subnet by selecting it in the list without typing at least one digit into the IP address field to enable the Join button.
Improved support for GameSmith Chat, Player Info no longer reports "Unknown" in the first tab pane for the game stats.
    • Removed a horizontal line near the bottom of the Player Info dialog when using Mac OS 8/9.
Those interested in downloading the update can do so from MacGameFiles.

6:22 AM | Jean-Luc Dinsdale | Comment on this story

In an email sent out to the press Tuesday, Microsoft senior vice president and chief Xbox officer Robbie Bach has announced that Ed Fries, vice president of games publishing for Microsoft Game Studios, is leaving the company after 18 years.

Fries, the 39-year-old Seattle resident responsible for the expansion of Microsoft's once-small gaming division into a 1,200-employee organisation, first started off as an intern with the company's applications division in the mid-80's. He was put in charge of Microsoft's gaming division ten years ago, and has been influencial in bringing top-notch developers Ensemble Studios and Rare into the company's fold. Fries played a key role in the company's acquisition of everybody's favorite, Bungie Studios.

Fries, who expressed a desire for a more sedate family life, and the pressures of having a young child at home as the prime reasons for leaving, would like to stay in the gaming industry, but has yet to announce his current plans for the future. Fries will be temporarily replaced by Microsoft executive Shane Kim until a permanent replacement can be found.

6:22 AM | Johan HansÚn | Comment on this story

Wolfpack Studios, the developers of the MMORPG Shadowbane and its expansion Rise of Chaos has posted a Developer Chat Log where they discuss the upcoming European launch of their game with the fans. A lot of topics are covered, including issues not related to the European release as well. A lot of questions are about the availability of the game and wether it will be possible to download it or you will have to buy a boxed version to be able to play in Europe.

    From the chat log:

[thangorn] Will we be able to download the game, and buy a key, to enbable us to play from day 1, or will we be have to wait for it to appear int he shops.

[Vosx] You will have to wait for a while. We are developing a European Free Trial similar to what we have in North America. So we do hope to offer that service in the near future for all of Europe as well. As for Cd-Keys and other things, we are discussing these options on a Company wide level at this time. We hope to have some news regarding this in the weeks ahead. But for Europe, you will need to purchaseShadowbane to play for a time before the Free Trial begins.

Follow the link provided below to reach the full chat log.

Shadowbane will launch its first European server, Damnation, this Thursday at 2pm Central European Time. The boxed version should be up on the European store shelves by the middle of next week.
