Massive Assault & Project Nomads for Mac
6:00 AM | Andy Largent | Comment on this story

European publisher Virtual Programming recently updated their website with two new game announcements for Mac OS X: Massive Assault and Project Nomads.

Massive Assault is a strategy title from which puts players in control of a fully 3D army using their proprietary engine. The game, which was released just recently for the PC, features political intrigue in a sci-fi setting. Here's a description from the site:

Take the command of "Free Nations Union" forces and defeat the secret alliance of "Phantom League" on one of 6 distant planets. The rebels decided to seize the power on Earth by first conquering the space colonies, which provide vital energy resources to F.N.U. The war for global domination will unroll on continents, at sea and in the air.
Have a look through the official Massive Assault site for more information on this title.

Virtual Programming also notes two of their other titles, Project Nomads and Celtic Kings, are both "near completion." While Celtic Kings was announced earlier in the year, this is the first we've heard of Project Nomads, the third-person action/adventure game from German developer CDV Software.

Project Nomads is a fantasy game set on a world of floating islands. Here's a quick rundown of the title's features:

  • Breathtaking 3D worlds with spectacular graphics
  • 3 different heroes to choose from: smart John, strong Goliath and beautiful Susie
  • Individual tactics depending on the choice of character
  • 8 main quests with numerous sub quests
  • More than 40 different opponents
  • Unlimited freedom of movement between the floating islands
  • Control your own flying island
  • The opportunity to turn your island into a flying fortress or munitions factory
  • Complete control of units such as double-deckers and turrets
  • Aircraft with selectable AI-controlled autopilot during battles
  • Dynamic weather system with day and night cycles
Have a look through the official site or Virtual Programming's mini-site for more on Project Nomads. No system requirements or exact release dates are available, but stay tuned to IMG for the latest.

IMG Reviews MindRover - The Europa Project
1:59 PM | Johan Hansén | Comment on this story

Inside Mac Games has reviewed Mindrover - The Europa Project, an interesting strategy title inspired by the television show Robot Wars. The game, brought to the Mac by Virtual Programming, lets the player create a robot specifically for the task at hand. There are some choices to be done that can greatly affect the outcome of the mission.

From the review:

The game is broken into phases. After selecting a scenario and a mission, players must choose a chassis for their rover. There are three basic types: hovercraft, wheeled, and treaded; each of which is available in small, medium, or large. You cannot, however, get fries with that. Each chassis has its own requirements and capacities; for example, you probably won’t do very well in a battle to the death if you select a small chassis, as there’s not a lot of room there to place weaponry. Conversely, a huge tank of a rover isn’t likely to win any races against smaller, lighter chasses. So chassis selection will depend largely on the scenario being played.

9:25 AM | Mike Apps | Comment on this story

Myth III fans out there will be pleased to here that MythDev, the group which maintains the Myth series, has released a public beta of the next patch for the game. The patch makes several changes to code and tags, and therefore is incompatible with the previous 1.1 patch. Here's what MythDev have to say about the patch:

Just in time for Thanksgiving and the holiday season, MythDev is please to announce the opening of the public beta period for the next release of Myth III: The Wolf Age.

Four Aspyr Titles Reach Final Candidate
6:00 AM | Johan Hansén | Comment on this story

Macintosh software publisher Aspyr Media is preparing for the holiday season with four upcoming titles reaching Final Candidate status over the weekend. The games in question are Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield, Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness and Wakeboarding Unleashed Featuring Shaun Murray.

In Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield it is once more time to guide your team of highly trained military units in the third installment of the Rainbow Six series of first-person tactical shooters. In Raven Shield you will deploy your team at several locations worldwide, from London to Rio de Janeiro.

As a new recruit at the Jedi Academy, you will learn how to use the Force and how to wield a lightsaber in combat. Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy will bring you through a number of missions as you explore the ways of the Force, be they light or dark.

Lara Croft, one of the most familiar leading ladies in the video games industry, will continue her adventures in Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness. In this game you will also have access to a new playable character, Kurt Trent, as he and Lara attempt to save the world.

The three main features in Wakeboarding Unleashed Featuring Shaun Murray are sunshine, water and fast boats. Take your board and hit the waves at several real-world locations. Wakeboarding Unleased also includes a co-operative gaming mode where one player can drive the boat as the second player wakeboards behind it.

Hopefully we will be able to play all these games in time for the holidays. We will keep you informed as the titles take the final steps toward shipping. You can pre-order your copy of any of these games from the IMG Store now.

Apple Posts Game Peripherals Guide
6:00 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story

Deviating a bit from the usual game previews, Apple has recently posted a guide to various gaming peripherals on its Games mini-site. Covered in the article are devices that go from the standard mouse to flight sticks, joypads, and even the iSight.

Besides just covering peripherals, the article also makes note of games that make good use of each type. It also examines more "hardcore" devices, such as foot pedals:

Hardcore flight sim fans should explore the solutions available from CH Products. Their Pro Pedals, for example, allow you to simulate realistic rudder motion in flight sims (as well as use them as gas and brake pedals in racing games). Add in their Flight Sim Yoke and you’ll forget you’re sitting in front of your Mac.
As always, it's nice to see Apple taking the games aspect of the Mac seriously. A special note goes to the mention of USB Overdrive in the article - a staple that most Mac gamers have undoubtedly tried at one time or another.

CM 03/04, Total Immersion Racing Due Dec 12
6:00 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story

Football (or soccer, depending on your terminology) fans should be pleased to note that Championship Manager 03/04 has gone into duplication. Up for release by Feral Interactive, the current estimation for release is December 12th.

The Mac version of CM 03/04 is now in manufacturing. Our favourite game will be in-store on December 12th. The general consensus from Windows players is that 03/04 is a vast improvement on CM4 in terms of gameplay....speed, interaction, etc, which if you have already downloaded and played the demo you probably know.
CM 03/04 is available for pre-order from Feral's online store. For those that'd like to get a taste of the game, a downloadable demo is also available. For those that have already tried out the demo, Feral has also posted a number of quick start files for various leagues, including Japan, Italian, and Brazil.

Along with Championship Manager, Feral also notes Total Immersion Racing has gone Gold Master. They expect to see the title become available on December 12 as well, with a demo coming as soon as tomorrow. Stay tuned for more on both games from IMG as they head to stores.
