Star Trek: Elite Force II Shipping
11:25 AM | Andy Largent | Comment on this story

Exciting new mail from Aspyr Media this morning brings the word that Star Trek: Elite Force II is now shipping for OS X. The game, which underwent a lengthy approval process, will soon be in the hands of Mac gamers everywhere.

Promising even more action than the original Elite Force, the sequel moves the Hazard Team from the "Voyager" series to the popular "Next Generation" universe. Here's a description from the press release:

players can expect to face off against classic Star Trek antagonists such as the Borg, Klingons and Romulans. Players will also fight several never before seen alien species including a mysterious nightmare race. To help players gain the upper hand against such formidable foes, Star Trek Elite Force II allows players to arm themselves with 13 different weapons and gear including a phaser, compression rifle, multi-functional grenade launcher, Romulan disruptor, tetryon gatling gun, a full-featured tricorder, and several all-new weapons.

Over the course of the Star Trek Elite Force II, players will be able to explore different options or tactics when dealing with a threat, as opposed to being forced to pursue a particular path. Additionally, the game boasts a larger number of environments and a significantly longer gaming experience than the first Elite Force.

Though it's obviously going to be popular with "Trekkies," Aspyr is betting even those who weren't fans of the series will find the action appealing.

System requirements for the game are also available:

  • Mac OS X 10.1.5 or later
  • G3/G4/G5 Processor at 733 MHz or faster
  • 256 MB of RAM
  • 3D Graphics Acceleration Required (ATI Radeon/NVidia GeForce or better, 16 MB required, 32 MB recommended)
  • 1.05 GB free hard disk space

    Multiplayer Requirements:
  • Internet and LAN (TCP/IP) play supported
  • Internet play requires a 56 Kbps or faster

IMG Reviews Sennheiser's PC 150 Headset
12:23 PM | Johan Hansén | Comment on this story

IMG's Tim Morgan has looked at and listened to the Sennheiser PC 150 headset. While Sennheiser is know for their professional audio products, their consumer lineup is indeed worthy of the high quality brand as well.

From the review:

Even outside of the discussion of volume potential, the quality of the PC 150 shined. Sound reproduction was notable considering the price, matching the quality of most mid-range consumer gaming speaker/subwoofer sets, and certainly exceeding the quality of any computer-integrated speaker system. The headphones reproduced sub-bass tones convincingly, providing a satisfying thumping in my head, although the sub-bass frequencies seemed to lack the comparative sharpness of the middle- and high-frequency tones. In general, however, the sound reproduction capabilities of the PC 150 were above average.

New Deus Ex: Invisible War Screenshots
12:15 PM | Mike Apps | Comment on this story

Gaming site UGO recently posted some new screenshots of the upcoming first-person shooter, Deus Ex: Invisible War. A sequel to the hit Deus Ex, the game uses a heavily modified version of the Unreal Tournament 2003 engine. UGO had this to say about the game:

Thanks to its innovative game design that let you choose the way to beat it, Deus Ex took the PC gaming world by storm a few years ago. It's probably one of the few single player first-person shooters we actually played again, because there was enough variety to sustain it.

Now, twenty years after the events of the original game, it's time to hop back in the saddle as Deus Ex: Invisible War is almost here. A new hero, new foes and a whole new gameplay experience await you, but instead of sitting back, we're charging right in with screenshots and an original video with creator Warren Spector on Deus Ex: Invisible War, before the rousing CGI cutscene introduction.

12:14 PM | Johan Hansén | Comment on this story

After a long wait, iDevGames has finally gotten their server back online. While the DNS is still propogating through--some users will be unable to access it right away--this means that we are finally able to vote for the entries in the ongoing uDevGame 2003 contest. While the original last day for voting was today, there has been promise of an extension of the voting time due to the downtime.

Everybody that has been trying out the participating games during the downtime are urged to go to the contest page to submit their votes. For those that haven't tried the games out yet should do so as soon as possible since this year holds some great entries that would be a shame to miss out.

IMG will continue to keep you informed as the uDevGame 2003 contest progresses.

11:00 AM | Andy Largent | Comment on this story

In the latest issue of Blizzard Entertainment's newsletter, the Blizzard Insider, the company has provided players of Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne yet another free bonus map to play. The new map, titled "Deadlands," is just the first of many to be released for Insider readers. Here's a description of the map:

Following in the tradition of Haven of the Damned, Hellfire, and the Iceforge, Deadlands is a multiplayer battlefield designed to provoke mayhem and frenzied combat. Decorated with the bones of long-dead adventurers, this desolate expanse of rock seems to have little worth fighting over - yet the locals often lock horns over every barren inch. Be sure to check back with us in future issues, as new official maps will be an ongoing feature in the Insider.
The Insider also features strategies for Frozen Throne as well as lots of new informative tidbits about World of Warcraft. Be sure to head over and give it a read now if you're interested.

Console Sales Peak, PC Games Falling
6:23 AM | Jean-Luc Dinsdale | Comment on this story

An interesting report released today by analysts U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray suggests that sales of the current crop of consoles has peaked, and sales will start declining.

In the November 2003 issue of the Toy & Video Game Industry Primer, analysts from the firm state that this year marked the midpoint of the current console product cycle, and that sales will slow until the next generation of console games hits the markets in 2006. Analysts predict that prices for consoles will drop by twenty percent over the next three years. In terms of marketshare, Sony's Playstation (both the PSone and PS2) dominate over 65% of the market, with Microsoft's Xbox owning just under 20% of the market, and Nintendo's GameCube accounting for over 14%.

While this may sound positive for Mac gaming, there is bad news for the computer gaming scene. As evidenced both by the large number of closings of PC game studios this year, and the ever-shrinking shelf space relegated to Mac and PC games at most game stores, analysts at Piper Jaffray are confident that the PC gaming market is shrinking. When figures of software sales for 2003 become available, analysts predict that handheld titles will see the largest growth, with 11% more sales than last year, followed by consoles, with 10% growth. PC sales, unfortunately, will have shrunk by two percent.
