Blades of Avernum Info
10:13 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story

Spiderweb Software has posted a page showcasing Blades of Avernum, an upcoming fantasy RPG that touts a scenario editor as one of its main draws. Following the standard set by the previous Avernum titles, Blades will include four scenarios, including "A Small Rebellion," "The Valley of Dying Things, "The Za-Khazi Run," and "Diplomacy With the Dead."

The scenario editor, included free with Blades, will allow players to create scripted adventures:

Anyone can use Blades of Avernum's editor to make fascinating adventures with cunning characters. Deal with monsters that work together and send out patrols to hunt you. Fight deadly bosses that summon aid, flee when they're outmatched, and surprise you with all sorts of nasty tricks.
Several screenshots are also available, one of which shows off the editor, complete with a number of tilesets and objects.

Blades is currently listed as arriving in early 2004. Those interested in more information on the editor itself can find a writeup by Jeff Vogel on the subject at Spiderweb's site.

Blizzard has recently released a third bonus map for players of Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. Following the releases of fire and ice-themed arenas, this latest one, titled "Typhoon," introduces large bodies of water:

Coastal fog has enshrouded this archipelago. Be wary as you pass from one island to the next: there is no telling what leviathans lie sleeping in this cold sea.
Typhoon is set as a small 2v2 or 3v3 battlefield that utilizes the Sunken Ruins tileset. It's sized at 156K, and those interested in downloading it or any of the other bonus maps can find links at Blizzard's site.

Shadowbane Expansion Q&A
10:13 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story

HomeLan Fed recently got ahold of Thomas Sitch, producer with Wolfpack Studios, and pumped him for information regarding The Rise of Chaos, an upcoming expansion pack for the MMORPG Shadowbane. Designed to introduce a new world for Shadowbane players, the expansion will include new races, areas, and classes.

Of particular interest to many is the new race being introduced, known as the Nephilim:

The Nephilim are demons that take mortal guise. As our story unfolds, we reveal that the Nephilim have been hiding among the peoples of Aerynth for some time now, making way for the forces of Chaos to stage a new invasion. As of the advent of the expansion pack, the Nephilim have revealed their true demonic nature. They are, essentially, succubae and incubi, who would be fair and beautiful to behold if it weren’t for their horns and bat-like wings.
Sitch also notes that a new area specifically tailored to high-level characters will also be included. Besides introducing new monsters and storylines, the area will also include an air of twisted design inspired by greats such as Geiger and Lovecraft. Also discussed is the development of Shadowbane to date, noting sales numbers, subscription trends, and community feedback.

Head Over Heels Remake for OS X
10:13 AM | Andy Largent | Comment on this story

iDevGames spotted a port of a remake to the 1987 classic Head Over Heels, which has just been ported to Mac OS X. The game was originally released for Sinclair Spectrum computers in the 80's and was praised for its isometric graphics and puzzling gameplay.

With this remake, users can now play Head Over Heels with new, full color graphics. Here's a description:

Not only was it a huge game for it's time, it also had great graphics and was very addictive - if somewhat punishing in its difficulty level. The variety in the locations was amazing and the challenges brilliantly designed. Quite rightly it was awarded with pretty much every accolade that could be bestowed upon it by the various magazines. Even today it still stands as a brilliantly designed title and has never really been bettered in the isometric adventure genre.
