Neverwinter Nights Tech Demo Released
10:25 AM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story

MacSoft yesterday announced that the Neverwinter Nights Beta Tech Demo for Macintosh will be made available to the public on June 17th through free download. The NWN tech demo is now available for download through our sister site, Macgamefiles.com, at 2 PM Eastern. The 240 MB demo is also available for IMG Pro users through their Hot Downloads page.

Here's more from the official press release:

The most complete software adaptation ever of the classic pen-and-paper Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game, Neverwinter Nights is a best-selling PC game and the latest release from BioWare Corp., creators of the nearly 5 million-selling Baldur's Gate series.

Players will enjoy a fast-paced adventure, revolving around an epic story of faith, war and betrayal. The intuitive user interface was designed to be accessible to new RPG gamers as well as the hardcore fan base.

More than just a game, Neverwinter Nights breaks new ground as the first complete role-playing system for the computer platform, allowing players to step into the shoes of either a hero or the Dungeon Master to tell their own stories and create their own adventures in the spirit of the exciting pen and paper original.

"Neverwinter Nights is one of this year's most eagerly-anticipated Mac releases because of its fast-paced adventure, online multiplayer capabilities, the new Dungeon Master feature and a whole lot more," according to MacSoft's general manager Al Schilling.

"Neverwinter Nights will provide limitless adventure and Macintosh gamers will have unprecedented game play options as they join the existing Neverwinter Nights community," said Trent Oster, BioWare's Project Director and Producer of Neverwinter Nights.

The Neverwinter Nights tech demo requires a Macintosh computer with a 450Mhz (or faster) processor, 256MB RAM, 32MB video card, and 645MB hard disk space.

Black Shades Released for OSX
12:01 PM | Alvaro Radigales | Comment on this story

Independent programmer Derek Arndt, the man behind OSX ports such as Barrage or Cube, recently made his latest project available for download. This time Arndt focused his skills on the carbonization of Black Shades, the bodyguard simulator with which David Rosen won the award for best sound and music in the uDevGame 2002 contest.

In Black Shades, the player takes the role of a bodyguard with psychic powers whose duty is escorting a VIP through a randomly-generated 3D city, protecting him from wave after wave of assailants. Though the lack of textures and the blocky models might turn eye-candy lovers down, this impressive little game boasts skeletal animation, ragdoll physics, iron sights aiming and many other features only present in the most modern first-person shooters.

The carbon version of Black Shades is available for download at our sister site MacGameFiles through the link below.

For more information on this and other projects from Derek Arndt, be sure to pay his web page a visit.

Star Trek: Elite Force II Interview
11:34 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story

Gaming site Doupe has posted an interview with Jon Galloway, Producer for Ritual Entertainment, with the focus being on the upcoming FPS Star Trek: Elite Force II. Already confirmed for a Mac release, EF2 takes Star Trek: The Next Generation as its setting and serves it up as an action shooter.

Galloway notes that being introduced to the team are several new characters, including a Klingon recruit, a security officer, and a pilot fresh out of the Academy. He also talks about the addition of some interesting races:

The two main races are the Idryll and the Attrexians. The Idryll are a fallen and worn race of intellectuals with a rich culture and dreams of a past in which they once controlled vast areas of space. The Attrexians are a boastful bunch of slothful industrialists, who tear worlds apart seeking to gain wealth from the spoils; currently the Attrexians have a ruling thumb over the Idryll and feel the Idryll dreams of the past are just wishful thinking.
Also covered in the interview are weapons and equipment, multiplayer facets, and the voice actors being used, including Patrick Stewart as Picard and Tim Russ as Tuvok.

No Mac Deus Ex 2 Planned
10:58 AM | Alvaro Radigales | Comment on this story

In a fairly disappointing post, a moderator of Ion Storm's official message boards commented that, as of now, there are no plans for a Mac port of the upcoming first-person action RPG Deus Ex 2: Invisible War.

While this does not necessarily mean that no Mac port will ever see the light of day, it does point out that it is at least not going to happen anytime soon.

The commercial success of the first title of the series on the Mac platform seemed to flatten the path towards a Mac port of the sequel, specially given the fact that the game uses a modified Unreal engine. This unsettling last post from Ion Storm, though not completely crushing our hopes, sure sends us back to uncertainty.

Stay tuned to Inside Mac Games, as we will be posting any news we receive on this subject.

2. Entries must be received by July 1st.

3. Custom Game Files eligible for the contest must be at least 8 levels long. Game Files with less than that will be disqualified.

4. The solutions to each level must be setup and viewable in Enigmo's Level Editor.

5. The URL to your Game File must be valid at the time of judging.

9. You can continue to update any of your Game Files until July 1st even if you submit them earlier. We'll post a link to your file as soon as you send it to us, but you can continue to improve the file until July 1st since we won't do any judging until then.
