Free First Person Shooter for OS X 9:06 AM | Johan Hansén | Comment on this story
The 2002 Happypenguin Award winner for Best Free 3D Action Game, Cube, has found its way to the Macintosh. There is a downloadable package available at Derek Arndt's homepage. The current package includes the game as well as the Dedicated Server application for Multiplayer games. At the moment the game is only networkable with other MacOS X players. From Derek Arndt's site: Cube. For most people that's a meaningless word, but for some people they know it's a popular Linux FPS. You can check out the main page here. Since this has been ported to just about every great platform it's only natural it would come to OS X eventually. A guy named Jeremy Bell tried a little while back and it seemed like we wouldn't even have to wait till Halloween to get our little Mac hands on it. Fast forward to today, he doesn't respond to e-mails, nor does anyone know what happened to him. It seemed like a great game so I grabbed what he had already done and just finished the port. That's right kids, I'm now releasing a fully packaged version of Cube to the OS X folks. Feel free to download the game and let Derek know how it works for you. There is still some testing going on with the Dedicated Server and if you feel that you would like to help Derek test, keep an eye out on our forums to get the time for the next server test.

Epic's Ryan Gordon on The Gamesome Mac 9:06 AM | Sean Smith | Comment on this story
On tonight's broadcast of The Gamesome Mac, the weekly Mac gaming radio program, hosts Sean Smith and Omaha Sternberg talk with Ryan Gordon of Epic Games, the developer of the Mac and Linux versions of Unreal Tournament 2003. Excitement in the Mac community about this game has been phenomenal: well over 400,000 Mac OS X gamers downloaded the Unreal Tournament 2003 Tech Demo in just the first four days of its availability, according to MacSoft, the publisher of UT 2003 for the Mac. Not only has Gordon had the task of converting Unreal Tournament 2003, he is also developing the Mac conversion of America's Army, another game that uses Epic's Unreal engine. Sean and Omaha will also offer Mac gaming news, reviews, and commentary, and together with their guest will take questions live from listeners in The Gamesome Mac's chat room. The Gamesome Mac can be heard live on MacRadio from 6 to 8 pm Pacific Time, 9 to 11 pm Eastern (Tuesday from 0100 to 0300 UTC), and on demand thereafter. You can tune in at The Gamesome Mac's web page, where you'll also find archives of past broadcasts. QuickTime 5 or 6 and a 28 kbps or faster Internet connection are required.

Star Trek: Elite Force II Preview Posted 9:06 AM | Johan Hansén | Comment on this story
GameSpy has posted a new preview of the upcoming Science Fiction First Person Shooter Star Trek: Elite Force II from Ritual Entertainment. Since the game is only a month away from its PC release, GameSpy got to see an almost complete version of it. Besides the single player game, they also look at the multiplayer of the game. From the article: One of things that made the first Elite Force such a hit at GameSpy was the multiplayer. Plenty of games these days include a capture the flag mode, but for some reason, Elite Force CTF really resonated with us -- and we played it every night for weeks on end (an eternity in game time). Along with the basic deathmatch, team deathmatch and CTF, Ritual is also including the "Specialties" mode from the Elite Force Expansion Pack (which still gets our award for best title EVER), which bears some similarities to games like Team Fortress -- players get to choose from a number of classes and battle it out. Also planned are modes for elimination and one flag CTF, as well as a new mode called "Bomb Defusal" (which we think could be a lot like Counter-Strike in space; after all, Ritual is also developing Counter-Strike: Condition Zero). To read the full preview, follow the link provided below. If you want to see Star Trek: Elite Force in action, Ritual Entertainment recently posted the official E3 trailer on the official Elite Force II site. Just go to the download section to find it.While the PC version is almost finished and will be released in a month, the Macintosh port by Westlake Interactive is already at Alpha and should be ready for release shortly after the PC version.
