Gracing the head of the new joystick is a trigger plus five additional thumb buttons and an eight-way hat switch. The base features four additional buttons plus two shift buttons. Is Unreal Tournament for OS X Dead?
12:47 PM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story

For the past year or so, Westlake's Glenda Adams has on her free time been porting Unreal Tournament to Mac OS X and had released three preview version of UT X. But with the recent announcement that she would be moving on to Aspyr, IMG forum users began to ask if she would continue work on the Mac OS X version of Unreal Tournament. The answer seems to be no, not at the moment.

Here's what she had to say:

To be truthful, I'm not sure what will happen with UT X. Someone else at Westlake could decide to work on it, but I don't really think any of the programmers there are interested doing that.

Whether I could work on it as a hobby while I was at Aspyr (if I suddenly was rejuvenated to program again), I don't know. There definitely are some legal issues, and I'm not even going to think about that right now, since at this point I don't have the interest in programming.

I guess I am hoping the the UT2k3 release will be enough for some gamers, simply because there isn't anything likely to happen on UT X any time soon. It's disappointing if UT X does end up this way, but maybe it's an appropriately messy end for what was a long and messy project. :)

So does this mean that Unreal Tournament for OS X is dead for good? Maybe not. In another post in the IMG forum, a reader posts a discussion he had with a programmer from UTPG.ORG, a group of programmers who have taken on the task of maintaining the UT code base to run on current systems and OS'es. According to the programmer, they recently received the code from Westlake Interactive and will be working on an OS X client but cautioned that it "Will be some time though" before we see anything.

Indeed, if you visit the UTPG.ORG web site, it has a listing for Macintosh with the words "No files available yet" underneath.

We'll be sure to keep you posted on any further develoments.

Black & White 2 Screenshots
12:21 PM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story

ToTheGame has posted several screenshots of Black & White 2. The sequel of the popular god-sim Black & White, B&W2 will once again allow players to lord it over a host of followers by using magic, deeds, and a trainable animal.

The screenshots show off impressively-rendered objects that should be familiar to fans of the original title, including towers, villages, and a giant ape. One of the shots also demonstrates the more battle-oriented nature of B&W2, showing what appears to be a lion leading an army into battle.

Though details on B&W2 are sparse, we do know that it will include several different tribes, including Aztec and Japanese, and that warring tribes will be able to upgrade their technology as they progress. Those interested in more info can find it at ToTheGame.

The Sims 2 Impressions
12:20 PM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story

After countless expansion packs, the game that the public just can't seem to get enough of is getting a sequel. Dubbed The Sims 2, this upcoming title appears to be expanding greatly upon the themes that made the original so popular, including closer management of the Sims themselves.

Gaming site GameMarshal has posted impressions of the closed door preview they received, noting the expanded abilities and AI of the Sims:

As the party continued, the two boys that were playing video games disagreed on something and got into a fight. We saw all of the teenagers run towards the fight and get into a circle to watch. At the same moment, mom and dad got home and were not too happy to find a huge party and a fight happening in their house. They started yelling, and kicked everyone out. The mother then went and picked up the baby, while dad started to lecture the daughter, who was too embarrassed and went up to her room.
The Sims 2 will include Sims that players can manage from birth until death, complete with a variety of facial expressions and mannerisms. Those who produce children will even pass their genetic traits down to their offspring.

The rest of the preview covers other behavioral senarios as well as further features of the Sims themselves.

IGN Posts Jedi Academy Impressions
8:31 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story

Continuing their rounds at E3, IGN PC has posted a piece that takes a look at Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, the next installment in the popular Jedi Knight series. This title puts Kyle Katarn aside and allows players to start from scratch, creating and customizing their own Padawan as they see fit.

One of the more talked-about features is the ability to wield either dual lightsabers or a double-ended one. Though the coolness factor alone may leave players wondering about the usefulness of a single lightsaber, IGN's article points out some inherent flaws in having both hands tied up:

While you gain a slight advantage with the staff lightsaber since you can attack enemies behind you, you won't be able to use force powers that require your hands at all. You're also limited a bit if you dual-wield lightsabers. Again, you won't be able to use force powers that require free hands. What you will be able to do though is force throw one of your lightsabers at some poor fool while still swinging away with the other. When asked whether you could sheath one of your sabers to use your force powers in the game, producer Brett Tosti said it wasn't in the game, but did say it's something they might consider.
Jedi Academy will also feature several kinds of multiplayer games, including standard deathmatch and capture the flag game types. As with many other team-based titles, players will be able to choose from a variety of specialized professions ranging from demolitions to Jedi Knights.

Other features discussed include further customization options for players, controllable vehicles and a non-linear single-player experience.

While no announcement has been made about the possibility of a Mac version, a port is not unlikely due to the commercial success of the previous Jedi Knight title.

For more information on this upcoming title, head to IGN's first impressions article through the link provided below.

Custer's Desktops: Counting Sheep
8:31 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story

Courtesy as usual of Brad Custer, this week's desktop features the wacky time-killer known as Sheep. Brought to the Mac by Feral Interactive, Sheep puts players in charge of a mass of fleecy bodies, which must be herded past various obstacles, including shark-infested ice cream and combine harvesters.

Though most of Custer's requests come from older readers, this week's inspiration comes from the younger set:

Last week I tried to make it clear I needed your requests and one of my youngest viewers came through with one for Sheep. This title was released by Feral Interactive and seems to be a real hit amongst the kids. I had fun creating this desktop and who wouldn't when you get to stare at cute little sheep while working. Although I did nod off a few times. ;) The wallpaper is simply entitled "The Flock" and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did making it. :)
As always, those interested in downloading Custer's latest will find it available in a number of resolutions at Custer's Desktops.
