Feral Announces Republic, Total Immersion

Last night on The Gamesome Mac, the weekly Mac gaming radio program, David Stephen of Feral Interactive announced two new titles that his company will bring to the Mac this year.

In Republic: The Revolution, you must seize control of your central Asian republic by any means necessary:

Starting with a single loyal supporter, a tiny secret HQ, and a very small base of local support, you must build up a nationwide faction powerful enough to oust the President and rule the Republic of Novistrana.

Three other factions, each with their own agendas, will be vying for power with you. And of course, most formidably of all, the President will go to any lengths necessary to hold onto power.

Persuade, hire, and recruit all manner of specialist characters to your cause or use less ethical methods such as brainwashing or blackmailing to achieve your aims. These characters range from army generals to TV film stars to archbishops.

Players may follow different strands of play, allowing them to play as politicians, businessmen, criminals, religious leaders or generals. Behave as ruthlessly or as compassionately as you want. The choice is yours, but beware, as every decision has its consequences and repercussions.

Influence the general populace through your key supporters by using them to instigate actions. Hundreds of exciting and diverse actions to order and orchestrate from vast rallies and riots to rigging football matches to secret police "hits" to broadcasting news propaganda. In short, anything that has any influential significance can be done.

Republic, currently in development for the PC at Elixir Studios, has been winning awards at the Electronic Entertainment Expo for two years now, including GameSpy's Game of the Show award for E3 2001 and their Strategy Game award for E3 2002.

In Total Immersion Racing, developed by Empire Interactive, your success on the racecourse is determined as much by your relationships with other drivers as by your skill at the wheel:

Choose a career path that leads from being the lowest ranked all the way to becoming a world champion driving a massively powerful eight-liter prototype racecar. On the way, team engineers and managers will give advice and input to guide the player.

What really separates this game from the pack is the other drivers that are passed on the track to victory. The player is pitted against a posse of other drivers, all with their own unique personalities, driving styles, and responses. An advanced AI system has been created to ensure that every action of the player at the wheel is balanced by an appropriate reaction of the drivers that are nearby. Motor racing drivers have a long memory: upset the wrong opponent, and he may not respond until many races later, maybe when you are on the last corner before winning your championship!

Total Immersion also features 18 licensed GT, GTS, and LMP class cars, as well as real-world racetracks like Hockenheim, Monza, Sebring, and Rockingham.

IMG Reviews Black & White: Creature Isle

IMG has posted a review of Creature Isle, the expansion pack for Black & White, which draws on the popularity of B&W's creature feature and focuses its entire plot on said creature. Part expansion pack, part stand-alone experience, does Black & White come of age on the Mac with Creature Isle, or do we just get growing pains?

Here's a clip from the review:

As beautiful as B&W was one year ago, Creature Isle is still gorgeous. This is only natural since the graphics engine is still the one used in the original B&W. While the graphics engine may be starting to show its age, I found the fantastic world designed by Lionhead to be every bit as fresh and beautiful as when I reviewed the original game. The designers even added in new creatures for some extra eye candy. While they reused some of the existing animations for the new creatures, they are still a sight to behold.

PlayMyth Brings Myth II to Mac OS X
11:26 AM | Mike Apps | Comment on this story today made two announcements that are sure to please many Mac gamers. The first is a patch for Myth II: Soulblighter that not only fixes a number of things, but also adds OS X support, a feature long sought after by Myth II fans. Although there will be no public beta of the patch, the patch is to be released on March 15th, which is not too far away. PlayMyth also announced a release date for the long awaited Myth III patch, which is slated to be released on April 15th.

Here's a list of fixes for both patches:

On March 15th, the updater will be released to bring Myth II: Soulblighter to version 1.3.2! The first update to Myth II in several years, brought to you by Myth Developers and Project Magma, features these enhancements:

-Updated for Mac OS X, Windows XP/2000 - no more disappearing cursor under XP, no more rebooting to OS 9 (Software mode only supported under OS X)
-Updated Video Card support
-Secured Network Communications - keeps client/server communications hack-free
-Reduced in-lobby chat lag with large number of plug-ins -loaded
-Various other performance enhancements

What could possibly follow that? How about a release date for the completed Myth III: The Wolf Age update? April 15th is the date. Improvements include: support - shares rooms (not games) with Myth II: Soulblighter

-Orders Supported
-Statistics window, Buddy List, Find Player added
-Performance Enhancements - Too numerous to mention

Interview With NDL

The gaming website Gaming Industry News recently ran an interview with John Austin, CEO of NDL. NDL created the popular NetImmerse engine, used in such games Freedom Force and Dark Age of Camelot. The interview goes into the history of NDL, along with some of their future plans.

Here's a preview of the interview:

GiN: NetImmerse has been used to help create some amazing games recently, like Bethesda Softworks' The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, and Mythic Entertainment's Dark Age of Camelot, both of which are nominated for this years Game Industry News Game of the Year Awards. Yet, both games and others that used NetImmerse look different. You can?t really look at a title and know that the NDL engine has been used. How do you keep the engine from taking on a distinct look and feel that other similar products exhibit?

Austin: And I?ll add a third title that got great reviews - Freedom Force - which has a comic book style completely unlike the others.

The best word to describe our engine is flexible - it allows each developer to add the features and look that will make their game truly unique. We believe we have found the proper ?level? of engine and tools that developers want. They are not so high level that they are restrictive and force the developer to do things a certain way - which could cause all games to have a very similar look and feel.

We have a very easy to use architecture that gives developers the ability to write a game in just about any genre whether it?s sports, racing, action-adventure, RPG, or FPS. We provide a toolset that is easy to fit into a developers production pipeline, giving them the freedom to push their creativity to develop award-winning games in a cost-efficient way.

GiN: I hear you have some exciting announcements planned for this year?s Game Developer Conference. Care to shed a bit of light on what future plans we might expect to see from NDL?

Austin: At GDC, we will launch our latest 3D game development system - known as Gamebryo. We believe Gamebryo will be seen as a major step in the evolution of game development. It builds on our proven NetImmerse technology with many new features and has a completely new tools architecture that provides a framework for game development that gives the team the freedom to expand their production pipeline - it is not a ?one size fits all? environment. Gamebryo lets you develop your game your way.

We have been working non-stop for over a year on this new product and we are very excited about the upcoming launch at the Game Developers Conference.

Soldier of Fortune II 1.03 Patch Released

MacPlay has released the much-anticipated 1.03 patch for Soldier of Fortune II. The new patch includes Punkbuster's anti-cheat software that prevents users from using cheats and hacks on Punkbuster enabled servers. The patch also includes a number of bug fixes and updates as detailed in the Read Me.

Here's more on the patch from the Read Me:

Version 1.03 includes all changes from version 1.02 (see below) plus the following additional changes:

- Added rebuilt mp_col2 to fix known map hole.
- Added new Kamchatka map mp_kam5
- Added new Jordan map mp_jor1
- Added new Shop map mp_shop2
- Added new shell art to update to GOLD Edition
- Fixed disappearing weapon issue on certain maps

New Actions:
There are new features in which the Player must set up new actions. These new actions include USE and DROP ITEM. These actions can be bound to keys in the CONTROLS SETUP - MISC menu in Multiplayer.

The USE function is used to place or diffuse a detpack.

The DROP ITEM is used to drop the detpack, briefcase or flag (depending on the type of game you are playing) if you do not want to be carrying it.

Other Issues with Key Pressing:
Pressing keys while a level is loading in ANY operating system may cause undesirable behavior in the game, freezes, or crashes. We do not recommend using the keyboard until the level has loaded completely and you are out of the loading screen.

Championship Manager 4 Demo Coming Friday

As announced on their website, European game designers Sports Interactive, designers of popular soccer and hockey management sims, will be releasing the demo for the upcoming soccer management simulation Championship Manager 4 Friday, February 28th.

Strangely enough, however, the sim will only be available to readers of Sports Interactive and Eidos' Championship Manager Magazine. The magazine, who's second edition hits the newsstands Friday, will be packaged with a hybrid CD-ROM containing the demo for both the Mac and PC versions of the game. From the SI press release:

This special edition of the Official Championship Manager Magazine features an exclusive playable demo of CM4 (The only countries where you are not likely to receive the CD are Spain, Germany, Belgium and Japan), the forthcoming instalment of the blockbuster football management series. The disc is also jammed with a host of extras.

Plus! We've got a huge squad of features including a management makeover, tactical masterclass, interviews with rising stars, an Eastside Hockey Manager preview and all the latest news on the future of Champ.

Time to pull out those credit cards and start ordering. Although the magazine will be on newsstands all over England and most of Europe, no word yet from Sports Interactive, Eidos or Feral Interactive on North American retailers for the magazine. Frozen Bubble Available

Frozen Bubble, a puzzle title featuring penguins and frozen bubbles of various colors, has been made available for the Mac. Originally a Linux title, Frozen Bubble has been ported to OS X courtesy of Bob Ippolito and is absolutely free of charge to download and play.

Gameplay is fairly unique, with the objective being to clear away groups of bubbles by firing more bubbles via a cannon at the bottom of the playing field. Striking bubbles of like colors in groups of 3 or more causes them to fall, as well as any other bubbles dependent on the structure. Each level boasts a unique pattern that must be solved in order to move on.

Borodino Begins Shipping

By Design, Inc., maker of strategy warfare games such as Gettysburg and Waterloo Campaign, has recently announced that Borodino, their latest title, is now shipping. Described as a "tactical level Napoleonic Simulation game", Borodino simulates the conflict between Napoleon and the Russians, who made their stand at Borodino.

Some of Borodino's features include the following:

  • Battalion level conflict, command hundreds of unit!
  • Great new graphics, see hedge rows, streams, chateaux, and smoke clouds hang over the battlefield.
  • Skirmishers!
  • All the commanders down to the Division level are present.
  • Command your units as groups. You can move hundreds of units with a click of the mouse.
  • Capture enemies flags. Increase the pride of your troops when they carry back enemy flags from a mlee.
  • Move units in formation by simply clicking where you want them to move to.
  • Multiple units per square.
  • Play either side and even switch sides in the middle of a battle.
  • The units are fully editable. Add or remove any unit from any battle. Change the characteristics of any unit.

Vendetta Update

Guild Software recently released a patch for their free massively multiplayer space combat game, Vendetta. The latest patch fixes issues with certain integrated video chipsets, along with adding some small new features to the shop and making a few speed improvements. Also added with the patch is a logoff timer, which is explained in the official release for the patch:

The game also now features a logoff timer. Once the /logoff command is issued from the command line (or Exiting with the menu), the game will count down 10 seconds until logging the player off. Any variations in acceleration will abort the logoff. Turning the ship (in physics mode) will not abort the logoff. However, it is possible that joysticks with jittery or un-calibrated throttles may cause an unintentional logoff abort. Exiting the game while docked at a station is instant. If a user exits from space, he will respawn in his last known position in space. If a user is disconnected while in space, without going through the logoff procedure, the user's ship will continue on its last trajectory for 1 minute before timing out.
